A "filler" chapter. So apologies for the boringness...

ChapterSeventyFour:

“Go to the police, they can help,” Matilda said worriedly.

Nina shook her head. “I can’t. It’s complicated and I really don’t want to get you involved. So please let’s just leave it okay?”

They saw Ric approaching and stayed silent until he finally got to them.

“Maddie, what’s going on?” Ric asked. “Beth was in a total fit this morning.”

“I had to get away from her,” Matilda told him. “I’m so sorry if she had a go at you and Rocco.”

“It’s okay,” Ric said grinning. “Sally and Mr Stewart had a few words with her. Hopefully they can talk some sense into her.”

“Hey ummm listen guys,” Nina interrupted as she checked her phone messages, “I’ve gotta go and grab… something… I’ll be back soon okay?” she rushed off

Matilda, and Ric sat down on one of the old boats and started to talk.

“So where did you stay last night?” Ric asked her.

“Oh at Nina’s. She was so nice about the whole thing. I really don’t know what I’m going to do when I see Mum. I really just feel like slapping her or something.”

“Hey... Is she okay? Nina I mean…” Ric asked “She seemed a bit edgy before?”

“Yeah, it’s something to do with her brother.” Matilda said concerned. “I think they’re in a bit of trouble.”

“It’s still on for tonight,” Johnny told her. “The guy’s gonna call ya and tell ya where to meet him. You alright?”

“Yeah,” she said nervously. “It’s just… I mean are you sure you want to rob the place tonight? Is it really worth it?’

“Hey, I’ve done this a million times before,” he said putting his hands around her waist. “We go in, grab the cash and whatever other crap there is… It’ll be easy…”

“Hey… What’s going on?” Rocco asked walking up to them. They quickly broke away from each other and stood as far apart as they could without looking suspicious.

“Nothing,” Johnny said casually. “We were just talking.”

Nina stayed silent and kept her gaze focused at the ground.

“You’re not still planning that job for tonight?” Rocco asked him.

“What’s it to you?” Johnny snapped.

Rocco turned to Nina and gently grabbed her arm. “Nina, don’t do this. You’re not like them, they’re losers and they’ll get caught… You don’t have to do this…”

Johnny grabbed him and took him aside. “You stay out of this Roc,” he warned. “If I find out that you’ve told anyone about the plan, I won’t be happy. And you know what that means…”

Rocco couldn’t even look his brother in the eyes. He could just feel the violence that was building up behind Johnny’s piercing glare.

“I haven’t said anything Johnny,” he said trying not to sound scared. “And I won’t. I swear.”

“You better not,” Johnny whispered viciously. “Or there will be consequences.”

Ric gazed at Matilda longingly as she talked about Beth and everything that had happened. Their friendship meant everything to him and he didn’t want to lose that; but there was that niggling part of him that wanted more than just friendship with her.

“Listen, Maddie...” he interrupted. “There’s something I need to talk to you about. It’s really important…”

“What is it Ric?” she said worried. “Is something wrong?”

“No nothing’s wrong,” he smiled. He loved how she was always concerned. “It’s just, I know that you’re having a rough time and I want you to know that I’ll always be here for you. We are friends after all right?”

“Of course!’ she exclaimed. “I wouldn’t want it any other way. I’ll always be here for you too, whenever you need me.”

“Yeah,” Ric said a little sadly. “Yeah, that’s what friends do right?”

Matilda leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “Best friends…” she grinned at him.

He blushed and smiled back at her. “Matilda, I…”

“Rocco!” Matilda shouted jumping up in excitement when she saw him walking towards her. “Finally…” She ran up to him and hugged him. Rocco put his arms around her and kissed her on the forehead.

Ric was wounded yet again. He wanted Matilda to be happy, and he was glad that she was. But deep in his heart, he wanted her to be happy with him.
