ChapterEightyThree:

“McGrath will be with you in a minute,” said Lara. “He’s debriefing the Super about the robbery last night.”

“You guys have any leads?” Jack asked.

“We’re getting there…” Lara sighed. “But there’s hardly any evidence. There is some good news though. Madge Wilkins has woken up and she’s starting to remember things about her accident. I was going to go over to the hospital and talk to her later. At least with a witness, we’ve got something to go on.”

“It must be frustrating…”

“Yeah, you know how it is. Actually… Detective Owens is thinking about questioning Johnny Cooper. That should be interesting.”

Jack went and sat down on the seats outside the offices. He wasn’t entirely sure how he was going to approach the subject, but he knew that if he’d made a mistake… it could ruin his chances of coming off suspension.

“Jack, Murphy’s ready to see you now…” McGrath said stepping out of the office. “Come on in.”

He felt like a kid going into the principals office. Sam Murphy sat at the desk, his pen and paper in hand, reading over some files.

“Gidday Holden,” he said civilly. “Darren tells me that you have some things that you would like to bring to my attention?”

Jack looked over at McGrath. He thought that it was weird that he was co-operating with the whole thing. In fact, it felt like he was encouraging it… maybe it was all part of setting Jack up?

“Sir, it’s hard to explain...” Jack said feeling his collar tightening.

“Well just say it Holden…”

McGrath saw the nervous look on Jack’s face. “Sam, it’s to do with my relationship with a young girl that we arrested last night for drug possession. Jack happened to over hear a private conversation which casted some doubts on my handling of her case.”

“Right, well I’m listening,” said Murphy.

“This girl and her brother…” Jack started, ‘I went over their records and I noticed that there were a few things that didn’t add up. I know for a fact that they’re here to cause trouble…”

“You have evidence to support your facts?” Murphy asked him.

“No not yet…” Jack said truthfully. “I did wonder how they’ve been managing to avoid being charged, and last night I found out how…”

“Because of their relationship to Darren?” Murphy said intrigued.

“He’s their uncle. I heard her call him Uncle Darren.”

Murphy turned to McGrath who sat there with a blank expression on his face. “Is this true Darren?”

“It’s true what Jack heard,” McGrath stated. “However, like I explained to him last night, we’re not related through family, we’re just close that’s all.”

“Who is this girl?” Murphy asked.

“Her name is Nina Rogers. I’ve been responsible for her brother’s parole conditions.”

“Darren, you know the rules mate, even if you’re not related to her, you know that a personal relationship compromises your position in any kind of investigation where they are concerned…”

“I know that Sam, which is exactly why I handed the case over to Detective Owens.” McGrath handed him a yellow manila folder.

“Was there anything else Jack?” Murphy asked him as he flicked through the records.

‘I can’t help but think that with all the stuff going on around here lately, that McGrath’s been covering for them. It surprises me that people as dangerous as them have gotten away with things for so long. It’s just… it’s pretty dodgy.”

“I see your point Constable,” Murphy said nodding. “And I appreciate your concerns.” He turned to Darren and looked solemnly at him. “Darren, I’m going to recommend an internal inquiry into your relationship with Nina and… Jake is it? I’m sorry mate, but I have no choice. I’ll review any criminal charges they’ve had against them and whether or not your involvement was inappropriate. But, until the investigation is over, I’ll have to suspend you from further police duties. I am sorry Darren, but it is procedure…”

“Of course,” McGrath said heaving a loud sigh. “Harper is quite capable of running the show, I’ll let him know what’s going on.”

“Thanks for your time Jack, you can go now…” Murphy said motioning to the door.

“Thank you Sir,” Jack said shaking his hand. He turned to McGrath. “Senior I’m really sorry…”

“It’s alright Jack…” he said. “Now you go. I’m sure that lovely wife of yours needs you at the moment…”

“I’m getting to old for this…” McGrath sighed as Jack left. ‘What am I going to do with all my free time?”

“Well there is golf. You do need to work on your game a bit…” Murphy laughed. ‘Listen Darren, there’s more. The Commissioner has asked me to debrief him on the situation… he’s concerned, for obvious reasons. Just watch out for yourself okay? You’re a good man, and you’ve had a good career, I don’t want to see you get yourself into trouble.”

Go Adia! Excellent, now we just must find out if Martha is found by those idiots.

“I’m getting to old for this…” McGrath sighed as Jack left. ‘What am I going to do with all my free time?” Loved that.

ChapterEightyFour:

Nathan and Lara walked assertively across the surf club car park.

“There he is over there, Detective” Lara pointed out. “Sitting outside the diner.”

Nathan took a deep breath. “Let’s do it then.”

“Johnny Cooper?” Nathan asked as he walked up to him.

Johnny looked at Lara and then at Nathan. “Can I help you officers?” he grinned.

“You know anything about the robbery at the surf club last night?” Nathan asked. “A large amount of cash and other goods were stolen and there was an attack on a young woman who was inside at the time.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” Johnny said smugly. “I didn’t have anything to do with any robbery…”

“Where were you last night Mr Cooper?” Nathan asked him.

“I was out…”

“You got any names to back that up?”

Johnny froze for a second. He hadn’t expected Rocco to have been at the station all night, and that cancelled out Nina as well.

“Of course he does Detective…” a man said walking up behind Johnny and patting him on the back. “You don’t really think Johnny would do anything bad now, would you?’

“Jake Rogers…” Nathan groaned.

“Johnny boy was with me last night,” Jake told him. “We were at a pub just out of Warratah Heights. Can’t remember what it was called. Do you mate?”

Johnny shook his head. “Nah…”

Jake grinned. “I bet you remember those twins though huh? Maybe that’s what you need Detective?” He scribbled something on a piece of paper. “Ease that tension you got building up… I’ve got one of their numbers here… I’m sure if you gave her a house call… she'd take gooood care of you.”

Lara coughed loudly which made Nathan uncomfortable.

“Sorry we can’t seem to remember the name of it…” Johnny smirked. “But you’re the Detective… I’m sure you can figure it out.”

“We’ll check out your story,” Nathan said snatching the paper. “But I wouldn’t leave town if I were either of you…”

The two guys watched as Lara and Nathan got in the car and drove away.

“You’re a lifesaver mate,” Johnny grinned.

“Hey it’s all good. What’s up anyway. I thought you would’ve had it sorted?”

“It kinda fell through at the last minute,” he said casually. “It’s hard to find good help these days.”

“Tell me about it,” Jake laughed. “Why do you think I only work with my sis? I’ve got her trained pretty well…”

Johnny gulped just at the mention of her. “Yeah, you’re lucky that you can trust her.”

“How’s things with your bro?” he asked. “He still trying to go straight?”

“Oh he’ll come running back, don’t worry about it…”

“Anything interesting happen while I was away?” Jake asked him. ‘Apart from the burg?”

“Nup?” Johnny lied.

“Right? Hey listen, can we meet up later. I better head home and drop off my gear. We’ll meet up for a surf later eh? Catch up on some stuff.”

“Yeah…” Johnny said glad he was leaving. “See ya then…”

Jake opened the door and dropped his bags outside his room. He searched the house for some kind sign of life.

“Hey you…” Nina said as he entered the kitchen. “You’re back early?”

“Yeah,” Jake smiled at her. “Darren called me about the drug charges…”

“Look it’s not what you think,” she explained. “They weren’t mine.”

“I know. And it’s cool. I’m not angry, but I’m hoping you’ll be a little smarter next time. You didn’t get up to anything else while I was away did ya?”

Nina quickly finished washing the dishes and wiped everything off. “Hey, umm, I’d love to stay and chat, but I promised Rocco and Matilda I’d meet up with them. I’ll catch ya later though okay?”

He nodded and she hastily kissed him on the cheek before she left.

“Good to see you too, kiddo…” he muttered.

He paced around the living room, before he sat down on the sofa. He was about to turn on the TV when the empty tequila bottle on the table caught his eye. He leaned over to pick it up and some of the pillows fell of the couch. He got up and started rearranging them properly, that is, until he found the wallet.

He rummaged through it, searching for a hint about it’s owner. It didn’t take him long to put two and two together. Someone had a lot of explaining to do.
