Owww, my shins!

Sorry I stole "sash" ( Sam and Ash) from you Tasha, from the IHA thread. Sorry, but they just depress me, so it's not you Sasha! I should have explained that better. Thankies guys for your nice comments! I love them all.

ChapterNinety:

“Martha?” Jack said cautiously entering the room. “Martha what’s wrong?”

Martha pulled the blankets over her head and sobbed. Jack knelt down at the side of the bed and carefully peeled away the blanket layers.

“Martha, talk to me,” he pleaded.

She wiped her eyes and blinked desolately at him. “I’m sorry,” she cried. “I feel like such an idiot. Nothing even happened to me and I feel so weak and pathetic…”

Jack shook his head. “You’re not pathetic, and you’re not an idiot. Something did happen to you Martha. Those guys tied you up and robbed you. Even if they didn’t do any physical harm, they still hurt you and none of that was your fault.”

“I could’ve fought them Jack,” she bawled. “I could’ve done something rather than just let them get away with it!”

“You did what they told you to do right? That’s all you could do. They would’ve hurt you more if you tried to fight them. You’re not an idiot Martha. You’re strong for doing what you did, most people would’ve been hysterical. But you held it together and I am so proud of you for doing that.”

A single tear streamed down Martha’s cheek. “You didn’t see the look in his eyes Jack,” she whispered. “The other guy was yelling at him to hurry up… if he had the time. He would of hurt me…”

“He didn’t, and I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”

“He said that we’d meet again…” she said scared. “He’s still out there Jack, what if he comes after me?”

Jack lay down next to her and held her tightly. “Don’t worry about a thing Martha. I will find this guy before he gets to you. I can promise you that.”

Jack walked out of the room and carefully shut the door.

“How is she?” Rachel asked looking up from her book.

“She’s sleeping,” Jack sighed. “She thinks one of the guys might come after her. It’s really eating her up. I hate seeing her like this Rach, it’s not fair.”

“She’s just been through a terrifying experience,” Rachel said in her doctor’s tone. “There’s bound to be some after effects. I can try and talk to her if you like?”

“That would be great. I just want to make these guys pay for what they did. Don’t they get that they’ve actually scarred someone, that they’ve actually violated her?”

“Let the police deal with it Jack, I’m sure they will find who did this,”

He thought about it for a minute.

“You know what?” he said to Rachel. “I’m a cop. And I think I know how I can find out who did this…”

“Jack what are you going to do?”

“Don’t worry, I’ll handle it!” he said as he rushed out.

“Open up!” he yelled as he banged loudly on the door.

Any harder and he would of shaken it out of its hinges. Nina walked up the steps behind him, confused about the commotion.

“Can I help you Constable?” she asked.

Jack swung around. “I need your help,” he pleaded. “I need you to tell me what you know.”

“What I know about… what exactly?” she asked him.

“About the robbery. About the person that hurt my wife.”

She laughed. “You really think that I can help you with that? I was at the police station when that was all going on. I don’t know anything.”

Jack grabbed her arms firmly. “Look, I know that your brother is tight with Johnny Cooper and his mates. Surely you know something. All I need is a clue, anything. I need to find out who it was that tied up Martha.”

She pushed him off her and went to unlock the door. “I said that I can’t help you. Take that as a clue.”

He grabbed her again. “I know you have a conscience, if you didn’t you wouldn’t of bailed out Matilda and Belle the way that you did. My wife is scared as hell, and I hate seeing her like that. You have to understand that don’t you? I have to know who robbed the surf club.”

“I’m sorry about what happened to you wife, I really am. But she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s not my fault. I don’t know anything about the robbery and I don’t think that you getting angry and going after whoever did it is a good option either.” She looked at him almost as if she willing to help. Jack gritted his teeth hoping she would change her mind.

“Leave it to the cops,” she said quietly. “You do anything impulsive and you’ll be putting yourself and your wife in more danger. And that’s not what you want.”

“So you do know something?” Jack asked hastily.

She shook her head. “I’m just saying… from experience. It’s a dangerous world Constable and you don’t want to get yourself mixed up in it.”

“Tell me what you know!” Jack shouted shaking her roughly. He was almost in tears. “If you’re scared, I can organize protection, I can help you if you give me information…”

Nathan ran up and pulled Jack off the girl. “What the hell do you think you’re doing Holden?” he yelled.

“I just… it’s nothing Detective…” he said composing himself.

“He was just leaving…” Nina said dazed. “Weren’t you…”

Jack looked at her earnestly. “Yeah, I’m just leaving.”

“What was that about?” Nathan asked making sure she was okay.

“Oh, he wanted to know if I knew anything about the robbery…” she sighed.

“Do you?”

“I know just about as much as my brother thanks for asking. What brings you by anyway?”

“Darren told me about Holden’s tox screen. Looks like you were right kiddo. I got one of my guys at forensics to look into it. Turns out there was another drug in Jack’s system. That’s why there was the delayed reaction to the epinephrine.”

“Okay…” she nodded. “So what happens now?”

“Nothing…” he said sorrowfully. “It’s out of my hands. If I bring this up, it means that they find out I had something to do with the epinephrine… then everything comes out. It’s best that we just leave it as it is. I just thought you’d like to know that you were right. When this is all over, maybe I can look into again. I’ll question the constables who were at the bar, but I can’t guarantee anything. I’m walking on eggshells at the moment and I really to keep a low profile. So do you…”

“Yeah, I understand. You know I really appreciate what you’ve done for me Nato.”

“What can I say…” he grinned. “I’ve got a soft spot for you kiddo. You know, if you weren’t on the wrong side of the law all the time, you’d make a great detective. Chin up eh.”

He smiled and waved goodbye as he left. She managed a smile back before going into the house. As she closed the door, she sunk down to her knees and cried. First the slip up with Johnny and now her sympathy for Jack. She buried her face in her hands. She didn’t know how much longer she could take it. But she knew that if she didn’t face reality, her world would come crashing down around her.

How come you know all that? :o I wouldn’t have had a clue! :P

Great update - as usual. The conversation between Nina and Jack was just like an actual conversation in H&A. :D
