ChapterNinetySix:

She stood outside the library waiting patiently, watching everyone happily pass her by. In their reality, there was no way they could ever understand what she was doing. Her world was falling apart all around her. And this was the only way she could get herself out.

“Nina! Here, here! I’ve got it! I’ve got the stuff!”

Dave nervously ran up to her, waving his arms around like a lunatic.

“Shut up you idiot,” she snapped. “Are you crazy or something?”

“Sorry,” he said as he handed her a bag.

She looked around guardedly before she opened the bag.

“Is this a joke?” she said angrily. “I gave you some serious cash, and you try to fake your way with some kiddies candy? Are you really that much of a fool? Or do you just think that I’m as stupid as you are.”

“Hey don’t off at me,” he said defensively. She shoved the bag hard into his chest.

“It’s not what I asked for…”

“Okay, look I know. But it’s gonna take me some time to get what you want. I can get it to you tomorrow though.”

“Well I don’t want it tomorrow… you can’t be for real…” she said shaking her head. “I want my money back.”

Dave knew Johnny would have a go at him for letting so much cash slip through his fingers. He had to think of something to stall her until he could get the goods that she wanted.

“Okay look. How about you take what I’ve got on me… just for now… and I’ll get exactly what you want tomorrow.”

“Whatever,” she spat. “Don’t let me down mate. If I find out that you’re taking me for a ride…”

“I’ll have the stuff. It’s no problem at all. I just need to talk with my supplier...”

Hesitantly she took the bag off him. “You better be for real…”

Rocco watched as Dave and Nina continued talking. When they saw him coming their way, they quickly wrapped things up and went their separate ways.

“What was that about?” Rocco asked catching up to her.

“Nothing, he just asked me what happened in English that’s all. Where have you been anyway?”

“Oh I’m running late today… lost track of the time…”

She smiled pensively and nodded. “Well I better get going…”

“Nina?” Rocco said concerned. “If you were doing what I think you were doing…?”

“Whatever you thought you saw, just forget about it okay Roc? It was nothing.”

“You were buying drugs from that guy, and I’d know that better than anyone. What’s going on?”

“What did I just say?” she snapped.

“But you don’t understand…” he pleaded with her. “Getting involved in all of that… It’s dangerous. Believe me, that’s why I had to get out. It starts off as something small, but pretty soon you’ll be in over your head, and I don’t want to see that happen to you. You’re a good person and… I happen to care about you.”

She looked at him, wondering how on earth Rocco and Johnny could be brothers. They were the complete opposites of each other. There was a lightness about Rocco that was so innocent; and how he had survived in his brother’s world all these years she just couldn’t grasp.

“People that I care about…” he continued, “they always leave. And if they don’t get out quick enough Johnny gets to them first and I never see them again… You and Maddie, you guys have given me chance when no one else has. I can trust you. And I don’t want to lose that.”

“Rocco…” she sighed sympathetically. “I care about you too, I really do…”

“Nina, just think about what you’re doing. The more you get involved in that world, the harder it is to get out. That is if you can get out alive.”

“Rocco… All I did was buy some drugs. I’ll admit that. But it’s personal and I know what I’m doing okay. I know you just want to look out for me but… Don’t worry about anything. I can handle it.”

“You don’t know Johnny and his gang…”

Rocco was only trying to do the right thing and she couldn’t punish him for that. She gulped, hoping that her conscience would just bury itself and disappear from her thoughts.

“Johnny and the boys… they’re bad news,” he told her. “They’re almost evil...”

How could she tell him that it was that darkness about Johnny that had captivated her in the first place. Her feelings for him had been too strong and it was a battle with herself that she had already lost. She couldn't go through that again.

“Don’t worry about me Rocco,” she said quietly. “Please. Just forget what you saw okay.”

As she walked off, Rocco clasped his face in his hands. While he desperately wanted to help her, deep down he knew that his problems had only just begun.

I really like that line somehow, it’s a great insight into the character.

Great dialogue again! :D
