ChapterNinetySeven:

Rachel opened the door. She looked so incredibly tired, but Jack was too focused on cooking to barely even notice her weary yawns.

“Has Kim left already?” she said putting her bag down on the sofa.

“Yeah, he had an early class at the gym. You just getting in?” Jack asked her.

“Yeah, someone was sick so I got called in last night. No rest for the wicked huh?” She took a bite out of an apple and flicked through a magazine on the table. “How are you feeling anyway Jack? Any problems since you left the hospital?”

“I am feeling 100%,” he said concentrating on the pancakes.

“What about Martha? Is she doing alright?” Rachel asked worried.

Jack smiled. “Well hopefully after this amazing breakfast in bed, she’ll be even happier!”

“I’m sure she will be!’ Rachel laughed.

Jack slid the pancakes onto a plate and carefully arranged the flowers on the tray as if he was an artist creating a wonderful masterpiece. “Am I romantic or what?” he said pleased with himself.

Rachel just laughed as she watched him tiptoe to the bedroom.

“Martha…” he whispered laying the tray down on the bedside table. “Martha are you awake?”

She opened her eyes and smiled lovingly at him. “Oh my god, it’s not our anniversary or anything is it?” she said wearily.

“No, but I thought because you’re my wife, you just deserve to be able to start the day with my great cooking.”

“Jack you’re so amazing,” she grinned. She sat up and had a stretch. She rubbed her belly and then she suddenly put her hand over her mouth.

She took one look at him and then one look at the food, before she pushed him out of the way and ran to the bathroom.

Jack stood outside the door listening to Martha vomiting. “You alright in there?” he called out.

He heard her spew up again, and then the tap running.

“Martha?” he called out again. Rachel came up behind him, wondering about all the commotion. “Was the breakfast really that amazing?” she asked him.

Jack gave her a look. “She doesn’t sound too good…”

“Martha, it’s Rachel. Is everything alright?”

Martha opened the door as if it were something fragile and stood there with a guilty look on her face.

“I’m so sorry Jack. I know you were only trying to do something nice… but I dunno, I just don’t feel very well.” Jack rubbed her shoulders as he followed her into the living room.

“Sit down, I’ll get you some water okay?” he said rummaging around for a glass. Martha curled up on the couch and Rachel sat down next to her putting a motherly hand on her forehead.

“You don’t seem to have a temperature,” she said to Martha. “Jack, could you please pass me my bag?”

Jack handed Martha the water and went to grab Rachel’s bag. He waited patiently as Rachel did a quick check up.

“Everything seems normal. How long have you been feeling like this?” she asked her.

“I had some cramps yesterday.” Martha said weakly. “I’ve been feeling a bit nauseous, but I just thought with everything going on…”

“Well it could be stress related,’ Rachel said trying to figure things out.

Martha put her hand over her mouth again. Just as she thought the feeling had passed, she jumped off the couch and ran back to the bathroom.

Jack and Rachel stood outside the bathroom, both worried about Martha.

“Please tell me that she’s going to be okay Rachel.” Jack said frantically. “ I honestly couldn’t stand it if something happened to her, not after everything we’ve been through the last few months.”

“Hey Jack, look you just need to calm down. At the moment, it could just be a stomach bug.”

“But what if it’s something else?” he said worried. “What if the people who drugged me are after Martha? I mean it’s just a coincidence isn’t it, that she suddenly gets so sick?”

Rachel gave him an empathetic look. “I’m sure that it won’t be anything like that. I’ll take her to the hospital and we’ll do some tests. That way we’ll know for sure. Leave it with me okay? I’m sure everything will be fine…”
