ChapterOneHundredTwelve:

Rocco stood at the top of the sand dunes hoping that Nina wasn’t too far away. He paced around the same spot, anxiously checking his watch and his phone, and at the back of his mind hoping that he wouldn’t run into Karl before Nina got there.

He couldn’t believe it when he saw them walking towards him. It was the first time he’d seen them together. He’d tried to imagine it in his head, but it was different when he actually saw them. He saw a guy, holding a girl’s hand; even thoughtfully carrying her school bag for her. When he closed his eyes, in his mind, there was no way that guy could ever be his brother. He wondered what it was like; to have Johnny so close, having him touch her… and for her not to feel any pain, or fear, or violence all of which seemed to permeate around him or even just the thought of him. Fear and violence was all Rocco saw when he closed his eyes and thought of his brother, and the guy in front of him seemed like a complete stranger.

Johnny leant down and whispered something into her ear before reluctantly letting her out of his grasp.

“What happened to you?’ he asked walking up and inspecting his brother’s bruises.

“Nothing,” Rocco mumbled.

“Doesn’t look like nothing…”

“Johnny…” Nina said warningly. “Don’t start…”

He smiled, dropped her bag and put his arms around her, forcing a very theatrical kiss out of her. Rocco stood there uncomfortably and she could see that.

“I know you’re upset about that teacher,” he said stroking her hair, “but I promise you that she won’t say anything.”

“Johnny, you better not do anything to Sally” she told him. “It’ll just make things worse.”

“Don’t worry about anything,” he frowned. “I’ll see you later.”

As he walked past Rocco he slapped him hard on the back. “Later Roc,” he sniggered.

‘What was that about Sal?” Rocco asked her as she picked up her bag.

“She saw us together… before. She was looking for you. That’s all of it,” she said handing him the envelope. “When will you see him next?”

“I dunno?” Rocco said worried. “Nina, this… what you’ve done for me. I really don’t know how to thank you.”

“You could stay alive for starters,” she grinned. “You don’t have to thank me Roc. Really, don’t even worry about paying me back. I’m not going to come after you…”

He smiled and tucked the envelope into his school bag. “So you and Johnny…? I really didn’t believe it when I first heard.”

He saw the uncomfortable look on her face. “I’m sorry,” he told her. “I didn’t mean to pry…”

“It’s okay…” she said softly. She wanted to say more. Explain the whole situation to him, but instead she stayed quiet, thinking her thoughts, but not saying them out loud. Her phone beeped loudly and she quickly read the message.

“Ummm, it’s my brother, he needs something so I have to head back home. Sorry. I’ll see you at school okay?”

Rocco nodded. “Yeah, okay. See ya.”

She smiled reassuringly before heading away, and Rocco smiled back, thankful that there was some one like her that he could relate to.

“Good to see ya back on your feet Roc,” Karl sniggered walking up behind him. “At least you’ve stopped convulsing.”

Rocco clenched his fist, a surge of anger building up inside of him.

“Oh don’t be like that Roc, I thought we were friends?”

“Never,” Rocco muttered under his breath. He unzipped his school bag and searched for the envelope Nina had given him. “Here,” he said shoving it in the guys face. “You’ve got your money, now stay away from me.”

Karl took the envelope and flicked through the wad of cash inside.

“Gees Roc, I honestly didn’t think you’d be able to get the whole lot. You rob a bank or something? Oh no that’s right, you’d never have the guts…”

“Look, just rack off alright?” Rocco yelled. “I don’t want anything to do with you anymore…”

Karl grabbed Rocco by his collar. “This is not over by a long shot mate,” he grimaced. “I’m only just getting started.”

ChapterOneHundredThirteen:

“Jack, it’s about bloody time,” Harper snapped at him as he walked through the station doors. “You do know who it is you’re having a meeting with?”

“Of course Senior,” Jack replied. “Did he say what it was about?”

“No, but McGrath’s in there with him at the moment.”

Jack breathed in deeply trying to process everything going through his head.

Murphy stepped out of the office and motioned over to Jack. “Constable Holden, we’ve been waiting for you,” he said bluntly. “Come on through.”

Jack straightened up and walked over to the office.

“Good luck sunshine,” Harper muttered under his breath.

The Police Commissioner sat at the desk, carefully reading everything in the file in front of him. Darren sat opposite him, in full uniform pondering the conversation that he’d just had with the man. The Commissioner sat back in his chair, rubbed his eyes and sighed. At fifty-five, he was getting tired. He loved his job, but he was tired and worn and drained. He ran his fingers through his greying hair and scratched the top of his head trying to make sense of everything.

“Sir, this is Constable Jack Holden,” Murphy said guiding Jack in.

The Commissioner stood up and held out his hand. “Nice to meet you Constable. Gordon Callan.”

“It’s great to meet you too Sir,” Jack said nervously shaking his hand. The men all sat down. Murphy on a chair to the side of the Commissioner, and Jack taking the empty seat next to McGrath.

“You’re probably wondering what this is about, right Jack?” Gordon said simply.

“Well…” Jack started. When he looked at the man, he couldn’t help but feel that he’d already met him. When he looked into his eyes there was a friendliness there that was inviting, and yet, there was something so distant about him. Something sad and tired about his eyes that Jack sympathised with. He was a well built man, tall and just a tad bulky. Jack had expected a mould of Harper and McGrath, but Gordon Callan looked like the kind of guy that could still easily run a marathon.

“I don’t get out to these parts much these days,” Gordon said to him. ‘Funny that. I thought I never get out of small town life when I was your age. But I’m not complaining. I’ve had a great career…”

Jack looked around the room and wondered what was going on.

“Jack,” the Commissioner continued, “Usually I wouldn’t interfere like this. This kind of thing I leave to Murph, because he is the District Superintendent, so I hope you don’t mind me being here.”

“It’s fine,” Jack said anxiously waiting for the man to get to the point.

“I’ve been over the situation and I’ve heard what Darren has to say. I’m glad that you had the initiative to pursue your instincts about the case, but…”

“But you’re on McGrath’s side…” Jack said.

“That’s not to say that Senior Sergeant McGrath won’t be severely reprimanded for his actions. He has crossed a line and he’s admitted that, he made a mistake Jack, and Sam has no choice but to put this case to the review board.”

“You won’t lose your job will you Senior?” Jack asked looking at McGrath.

“That’ll be up to the board,” McGrath said sullenly. “There’s a lot more to this case Jack.”

“So are you related to Jake and Nina Rogers?” he asked.

“Again, something we’ll leave for the board,” Sam interrupted. “Jake and Nina are an entirely different case altogether.”

“What about Nathan?” Jack asked.

“I’ve had a chat with Detective Owens,” Gordon sighed. “Everyone involved will be put in front of the board. Their actions have been totally unacceptable.”

“But Jack, given the circumstances,” Sam interrupted. “I’ve decided to reinstate you and McGrath. We’ll follow everything up once the situation is fully over. Internal will need to do the rest of the investigating and that really can’t be done at this time. Not till we have all the facts.”

“So I’m back on the job?” Jack smiled.

“As of today,” Sam nodded.

“That’s great!” Jack said barely able to contain his excitement. “Thank you so much Superintendent.”

“You should go and see Harper about your shifts Jack,” McGrath said to him. “He’s already been filled in on everything.”

As Jack stood up the rest of the men stood up with him. He shook hands with the Commissioner again, before Sam lead him out the door.

“What about Jake and Nina?” McGrath asked quietly as Sam shut the door.

“Four years, Darren. Four years…” Gordon sighed and flicked through a file. “I never thought I’d see those names again. Jake is a lost cause. We both know that. Nina however…” He looked up at Darren almost guiltily. “My being here is a bad idea right?”

“When this gets out, it won’t look good.,” McGrath sighed. “You’re not the Commander at CID anymore Gordy. There is so much more to lose if things go wrong.”

Gordon picked up a small picture that was paper clipped to the folder. He held it in front of him and stared at it intensely, his hands trembling as his eyes connected with the eyes in the picture.

“I lost everything that mattered to me four years ago Darren,” he said sadly. “I’ll be damned if I let that happen again…”

The early light from the sun crept through cracks in the curtains, the rays of light slicing through the air and slowly filling the room with its gold amiable glow.

Absolutely loved that opening line, Adia. :)

Nina stepped away from him and he looked at her sorrowfully, wishing that he could have done more to keep Sally’s condemning glare away from her.

Awww...

Once again, great dialogue and incredibly well written, especially the Nina/Johnny relationship. :D
