Chapter 18:

“I haven’t seen you in ages” Lucas said looking at Jack. He had caught up with him along the beach; Jack looked too distracted to even notice him.

“Huh?” Jack replied looking at Lucas, he hadn’t heard what he said.

“I said, I haven’t seen you in ages” Lucas repeated himself.

“Oh are you trying to tell me you miss me” Jack smiled at Lucas and messing up his hair. Lucas laughed back, Jack was full of himself, he didn’t know how he had put up with him for so long.

“No” Lucas replied firmly, “Why would I miss you” he added. Jack shook his head, he placed himself down onto the sand, Lucas did the same.

Jack stared out into the water, he hadn’t been himself these past few days, all he seemed to be thinking about was Martha, he wish he didn’t because it only caused him more hurt. He didn’t know how much more of this he could take.

Just seeing her everyday and knowing she wasn’t his was bad enough. He didn’t see why Martha had to break up with him as soon as Ashley had come, it wasn’t like he would ever do the same to her again, he had already made that mistake once.

“Jack Holden, you did not just do that” Lucas replied beside him, this caught Jack’s attention he turned to face him.

“What?” Jack asked.

“You were checking her out, you were checking that girl out there, weren’t you?” Lucas pointed at him. Jack laughed at his stupidity, but then stopped when he saw that Lucas was being serious, Jack looked out to where he was before and there was some random girl who he had never seen before.

“I was not” he turned to Lucas

“You were” Lucas replied.

“I wasn’t ‘checking her out’” Jack replied, he stood up walking away from him, Lucas got up and followed.

“Wait till Martha here’s about this” Lucas laughed as he practically ran after Jack.

At the mention of Martha, Jack stopped and froze, Lucas hadn’t known yet that they weren’t together, it wasn’t like they had lasted long, with him and Martha it never lasted long. They weren’t good when it came to fights, they didn’t know how to get through them. Jack shook his head trying to get Martha out of it. He turned to Lucas, showing no emotion.

Lucas looked at Jack, who seemed angry. “I was just joking” Lucas replied in defense.

“No it’s not that” Jack said as he turned away from Lucas.

“What’s up then?’ Lucas asked him.

“Nothing, don’t worry” Jack said trying to get Lucas of his back, but he had no luck.

“Obviously something’s up, there is no use in saying nothing” Lucas replied.

“Has anyone ever told you you’re annoying” Jack asked his brother.

“A couple of people, but hey it runs in the family” Lucas smiled at Jack, Jack smiled back.

“Me and Martha broke up” he told Lucas turning serious.

“What? Already?” Lucas replied.

“Yeah but it’s not like we went out for long, it doesn’t matter” he said walking away. Lucas let him go this time, he could tell he was hurting but he knew Jack was stubborn and wouldn’t admit that Martha had a huge effect on him.

Martha had been working for a couple of hours now, it was a pretty boring day, she didn’t have much people come in, she couldn’t wait for her shift to be over, she was tired and hadn’t slept last night.

Noah’s was pretty empty, there was a couple of people and Alf was cleaning the tables. She just wanted this to be over. A certain women that walked in caught Martha’s eyes, she looked closely at her.

She then looked away quickly noticing who it was, Ashley had come in “Crap” Martha thought to herself, she knew she was going to try and talk to her and Martha wasn’t ready, she didn’t want to deal with this now.

“Granddad” she called out. “Can you take over for a couple of minutes” she added, before walking out trying to make her escape, but she had no luck, Ashley had called out to her.

“Martha” she practically screamed, multiply times until she stopped. Martha turned around forcing a smile, that even a 2 year old could tell it was fake.

“Hey” Martha said.

“Hey, oh my god I haven’t seen you in ages” Ashley replied excited, Martha was actually surprised she hadn’t come up and hugged, her. She hated this girl, had Ashley already forgotten what she had done to her. Had she forgotten that she was one of the reasons her and Jack’s relationship would never be the same, but yet here she was trying to be as friendly as she could.

“Yeah it’s been a while” Martha replied,, trying to sound interested.

“I heard you and Jack broke up couple of days ago” Ashley said. Martha looked away, she could have slapped her at that very moment, she hadn’t seen her in 6months and yet that was the first thing she had said to her. How dare she? Martha thought to herself, she has no right and yet she pretend like she was feeling sorry, but Martha knew she was practically jumping up and down inside, now that she wasn’t going out with him, Ashley could have Jack to herself without having to cheat .

Martha just nodded in response.

“Hey Jack” Ashley said over Martha’s shoulder, Martha turned around to see Jack coming their way. He smiled at Ashley but didn’t even look at Martha, he walked straight passed and over to the bar.

When Martha turned around to face Ashley she was gone and Martha hadn’t even realized, Martha walked back to the bar, determined to talk to Jack, she couldn’t go on pretending like he didn’t exist and she hated being ignored especially by him.

“Hey Alf, can I please get a beer” Jack asked, but before Alf could reply Martha got in first.

“It’s alright granddad I’ll take over form here” she smiled at Alf and waited until he left and then turned around to face Jack. “Hey to you as well” she smiled sarcastically. Jack took the beer from her and went and sat down at a table.

“So your just go to ignore me every time I’m around, is that the plan” Martha asked following him

“I’m not ignoring you, I just don’t feel like talking” Jack replied, taking a sip of his beer, trying to seem uninterested.

“Oh is that so, but you can still smile and say hello to Ashley, but with me it’s like I don’t exist” Martha told him, getting angry, she was trying and yet he was showing nothing.

“Your point?” Jack asked.

“I don’t have one” Martha replied frustrated. “Is this all because I broke up with you” Martha added.

“No” Jack replied taking another sip of his beer.

“Jack I don’t want it to be like this between us” Martha told him.

“That was your choice” he replied.

“Yeah but I didn’t choose this to happen between us, can’t we just get over it” Martha suggested, trying not to argue.

“I am getting over it, but your not, if I remember correctly you are the one that came and talked to me, you followed me here” he told her.

“When did you become such a jerk” Martha stood up, walking away, she stopped to look at Jack. “Wait, don’t answer that” she added. He had always being a jerk, but why did she still like him then?
