Chapter 34:

“Hey you ok?” Martha asked taking a seat next to Dean. She had just woken up and had a massive headache. Shed thought a walk down the beach would help her, that’s where she met Dean.

“Yeah fine” Dean replied not even looking at her, he didn’t know what to do anymore; he was so confused as to what was going on. He wished that she would stop calling him, that would make things so much better, but she just wouldn’t give up. How could he really tell Martha what was going on. “I’m sorry for leaving like that last night” he told her finally looking at her.

“Nah that’s fine, where did you go?” Martha asked.

“Oh just went to help someone out, that’s all” he said hoping she wouldn’t ask anymore questions. He looked away, unable to look her in the eye. He didn’t like lying to her.

“Are you sure you’re ok?” Martha asked, not convinced

“Yep” was all that he could reply.

“Okay, well I’m of to see Tash, if you want to talk about anything just give me a call” Martha said as she stood up and walked away. That was weird she thought, they weren’t even acting as they were in any kind of relationship. She had thought about all this morning, about Dean and Jack something had to be done about it, or someone would end up getting hurt.

Once Martha was in the distance Dean picked up his mobile and began dialing a number. He waited for her to pick up. He never thought he would be doing this, he had even promised himself he wouldn’t call her, but for some reason he couldn’t keep away, he needed to talk to her, to hear her voice.

“Hey, how are you?” he asked into the phone. A smile escaped his lips as he heard her voice. He had spoken to her last night as well but it wasn’t enough.

“I miss you” he said softly. He knew that that was it, he couldn’t go back now, he wanted her just as much as she wanted her.

“Me too” she replied not wanting to let herself cry. “That’s why you should come back” she told him.

“I know…” he began. Thinking of what to say next, it wasn’t that simple. “I want to but I don’t think I can” he told her truthfully.

“Can I at least see you, please?” she begged him. It had felt so long since she had seen him.

“I don’t know” he replied.

“Dean..” she began. “I just want you back and I know you do as well, so why can’t we just fix this?” she asked him.

“You know it’s not that simple” he replied.

“But your not even trying to make it simple” she argued.

“I am, you know I want to be with you more than anything b-“ he began to speak but she cut him of.

“Then come back and see me” she asked again, hoping it would get through to him. “Come on, you can just stay here a week or two and see how it goes” she added.

Dean let out a loud sigh, why was everything always so complicated, never had it been simple for him. But this time he was going to change that. “Okay” he told her.

“Really” her voice growing in excitement.

“Yeah” he replied letting out a smile, knowing that he would get to see her soon. “I’ll see if I can come there tomorrow, but first I have to do something” he told her.

“That’s fine, oh my god I can’t wait to see you” she answered back.

“Yeah me neither” he smiled. “Well I better go see you soon” he added.

“Bye” she replied.

“Martha I don’t understand” Tash said for the third time today, she had no idea what Martha was thinking. “You like him and you think he’s prefect?” Tash asked again.

“Yes Dean is that” Martha replied.

“So what’s the problem then?” Tash asked confused. “I don’t see what’s going on?” she added.

Martha couldn’t take it anymore; she just wanted to blurt out the truth. Could she really tell her best friend what was going inside her head.

“Martha?” Tash tried again

“It’s not the same” she answered truthfully. “It has never been the same” she added.

“What do you mean?” she asked again, not quite understanding what Martha was trying to say.

“Jack..” was all that she said, before putting her head down in shame, she felt bad for having feelings for him while she was with someone else. “It’s not the same with Dean. I know Dean is the kind of boyfriend anyone would want. He’s perfect he’s funny and his caring, but I don’t want that, I just want Jack” she told her the truth.

“No matter how hard I try to move on and forget about him it doesn’t work.” Martha explained to her.

“Does Jack know?” Tash asked sympathetically.

“I don’t know things have been confusing between us” she told her.

“Martha you need to tell Dean, I think he deserves to know as well” Tash said.

“Yeah but what am I supposed to tell him. He’s being so nice to me, I don’t want to hurt him” she replied.

“Well maybe yo….” Tash trailed of on her own sentence as she spotted someone behind them. Martha turned around to see Jack enter the diner. Great she thought she didn’t expect to see him so soon, she was still kind of embarrassed because of what happened last night. “I’m going to go” Tash smiled, she wanted to leave Jack and Martha alone even thought Jack hadn’t spotted them yet he was busy talking to his dad.

Martha didn’t dare look up, maybe if she was lucky he would not notice her and just walk out. That way she wouldn’t have to talk to him about last night, but she had no such luck as she Jack make his way towards her. She let out a loud sigh, she had to face him.

“If I didn’t know better I’d think you were ignoring me” Jack laughed as he approached Martha.

“Nah I’m, not” Martha smiled in return unable to look at him. He took the seat opposite her and waited for her to say something but she didn’t speak.

There was an awkward silence between them, before Martha heard him laughing. She looked up at him. “What’s funny?” she asked, she didn’t not see a funny side to this.

“Oh nothing” Jack said as he got up and made his way over to Martha’s side so that he was sitting next to her, he could tell that Martha didn’t want to talk about last night, but he couldn’t help but bring it up.

“Is someone embarrassed about what happened last night?” Jack laughed at her.

She turned to face him and he was smiling right back at her. She shook her head. “Jack stop it, I don’t see the funny side to it” she told him seriously, but that soon turned into a smile.

“Come on I’m just kidding, you’re not the first one to hit onto me like that” Jack laughed trying to make a joke of it. Martha laughed back in return maybe she could see the funny side.

“I’m sorry” she told him, her face turning serious. “I don’t know what was going on with me and thank you for stopping it, I could have ruined so many things” she added.

“That’s ok...” he smiled and took a deep breath before continuing again. “I didn’t want to be that guy again” he told her turning serious.

“What do you mean?” Martha asked confused

“I didn’t want to be that guy that went and ruined a relationship again. I’ve made a huge mistake already once I didn’t want to repeat it again. I know it’s not the same situation, but I didn’t want to be part of it all” he told her honestly.

“Thank you, that means a lot” she told him, surprised of what she had heard, she'd never expect Jack to say something like that, maybe after everything he had changed.

Chapter 35:

Martha made her way over to Noah’s. She was too busy in her own thoughts to even notice anything around her. The conversation she had with Jack at the diner had put a smile on her face, she was glad they had cleared what happened last night, she didn’t want things to be so awkward between them, she couldn’t handle that

There was also the fact that she had made up her mind about this, after a couple of confusing weeks she had come to her decision as she was meeting Dean at Noah’s to talk to him about it. She knew she wouldn’t just end up hurting him if she kept this up. There was no denying that Martha liked him, but only as a friend, she didn’t feel anything else between them.

But this was going to be harder than she would expect, she didn’t know how Dean would react to it all. He had also told her that he had something to tell her, Martha wondered if he would finally tell her what has been going on with him in the last week.

She stopped as she spotted Dean sitting at one of the far tables in the corner. All of a sudden it got difficult, how was she supposed to tell him. It was all her fault that she had let it get this far. But she had to tell him, there was no backing out now.

He hadn’t even spotted her; he had his head down and was doing something with his phone. Martha let out a sigh, before finally making her way over to him. She smiled at him, when he looked at her.

“Hey” she said, as she took a seat across him.

“Hey” he replied. He then looked back down, there was a long silence and things just kept getting more and more awkward by the second.

“So... what did you want to tell me?” Martha began trying to start the conversation; it had never felt this weird between them. She decided to let him go first and tell her what was up.

“Well, I don’t really know how to say this” Dean replied, he had been prepared before he saw Martha, but now that she was actually here, he had lost everything he wanted to say.

Martha looked at him closely, he seemed different, and she assumed what he was going to tell her was big because he looked worried.

“Martha you’re amazing and you’ve been great these past few weeks” Dean began to speak, gaining some courage; he just wanted to get this over and done with. Martha sat there in silence and wondered what he was about to tell her.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had an awesome time with you these weeks, but I don’t think it can work between us...” he finally said looking at her. He could tell she was shocked by what she had heard.

“What do you mean?” Martha asked wanting hin to make it clearer.

“I think this happened way to fast, for both of us” Dean admitted the truth. Martha nodded her head in response; everything he was saying was so true.

“I mean we were friends and then couple of days later we got together. I think we kind of rushed it so…” he replied. “Maybe we could start from the beginning, from being friends?” he asked her. She looked down and for some reason she wasn’t able to look at him in the eye. She had felt exactly the same way. She finally looked up at him smiling.

“Yeah I think I’d like that” Martha smiled back at him.

“And who knows where that might take us, we’ll just have to see.” He replied at her smiling back. He couldn’t believe that things had turned out so good. He wasn’t expecting Martha to act so cool about it.

“So what did you want to tell me?’ he asked.

“Oh nothing, it doesn’t matter” Martha replied he had just told her everything she wanted to tell him.

“I’m heading back to the city in an hour and I’ll be back in maybe 2 weeks” he told her.

“That’s awesome” Martha replied.

“You know I’m glad we could sort this out” he told her.

“Yeah me too” she smiled. She was now free of all her problems, she didn’t have to feel bad anymore, she and Dean were now officially broken up. “So how about I go and buy us a drink” Martha said looking up at him.

“Yeah that would be great” he replied as he watched her get up and head of to the bar. He didn’t think this would have been so easy; she really was a great girl.

“I’m coming” Martha replied as she got up from the couch and headed for the door. She opened it wondering who it could be.

“Hey” she smiled to herself, when she saw the person was no other Jack Holden.

“Hey, so Beth asked me to drop off these papers, something to do with work” he told Martha handing them to her.

“Thanks” she smiled at him. “Do you want to come in?” she asked.

“Sure, why not” he answered back, walking in and taking a seat. “So someone’s feeling a lot better, I guess the embarrassment has faded” he joked as she took a seat next to him.

“Very funny Jack, your never going to let me live that down” she laughed back. She was definitely in a much better mood.

“Probably not” he laughed with her.

“Guess what? I’ve got some news” Martha said sitting up. She wondered how Jack would take it.

“What?’ he asked eager to know.

“Me and Dean we aren’t together anymore” Martha told him. She looked at Jack, who was shocked by what he had heard.

“Wow, really?” Jack asked, he was not expecting her to say that.

“Aw, Jack don’t get too upset, I’m fine” Martha replied sarcastically.

Jack laughed, before beginning to speak “So where’s Dean now?” he asked.

“He went back to the city” Martha replied at Jack who couldn’t take that smile of his face. He couldn’t believe this was happening, last night and now this; things were starting to get better for him.

One thing he was mostly happy about was that there was no other guy with Martha, he wouldn’t have to put up with other guys touching her, he couldn’t stand that. Maybe this meant that they could go back to how they were, just the two of them.

Chapter 36:

It has past a week since Dean had left the bay. Things had gone back to how they were before and Martha couldn’t be happier. Her and Jack weren’t back together, but that didn’t stop him from flirting with her.

She had spent a lot of time with him these past few days and she had enjoyed it. Just being around him was good enough; she had actually missed spending so much time with him. Sure they would still talk when she had Dean, but now it was different.

Also she had gotten more used to Kim and Ashley’s relationship and if she was going to admit it they actually made a cute couple. She had decided that she had to accept it; they weren’t going anywhere any times soon, so she would have to move on from it

Suddenly her thoughts were distracted as she felt someone place their hands around her waist. She smiled to herself; she knew exactly who it was. She turned away and moving his hands away.

“How did I know it was you” she rolled her eyes.

“Oh I don’t know, maybe because you love me so much” Jack replied, winding up Martha.

“Yeah right” she shoved him in the chest, but then laughed as Jack pretended it hurt.

“Anyway, I just came down and wanted to see if you wanted to go to the beach. Tash, Robbie, Kim and Ashley are already down there” Jack informed her.

“Oh I don’t know, that involves me spending more time with you. I don’t think I can handle being around you for so long” she joked.

“Oh please, you know you badly want to go, just to be with me” Jack said stirring things with her. He loved to see Martha so annoyed at him and he had missed that. When she was Dean he couldn’t act like this around her, because she belonged to someone else.

“I think I’ll come, I mean if you annoy me that much Tash is there and she’ll save me” Martha replied.

“Oh are you sure about that. You know she and Robbie just got engaged, they are all over each other, it’s so wrong” Jack told her. Every time he saw Robbie and Tash they were always attached.

“Oh what’s wrong with two people showing some love to each other” Martha teased him.

“Well nothing………. if it’s me and you” Jack said as he stepped closer wrapping his hands around her waist.

He was standing so close to her and she liked it, all this flirting was getting to her. She was so tempted to wrap her hands around his body, but she didn’t, instead she pulled away from his grip.

“Oh Martha that’s mean” Jack replied.

“Deal with it” she joked as she turned around and made her way towards the beach. She didn’t know how longer she could keep this up; she was eventually going to give in.

“Who would have thought we’d be here now” Tash said gazing up at Robbie. She’d always known she’d love Robbie, but not this much. She still couldn’t believe they were engaged, it was all so exciting.

“Mmm, I know” Robbie replied as he placed a soft kiss on her lips.

Jack turned to look away. “You know Kim and Ashley took the safe option and went home, they don’t have to put up with this” Jack told Martha. “Try being around them for a long period of time it’s all they ever do” he rolled his eyes.

“Well if you’ll stop whining, we can go for a walk?” Martha suggested as she laughed at him.

“Yes please” Jack said as he stood up quickly, he pulled Martha up as well. They both made their way along the beach, Tash and Robbie hadn’t even noticed they had left.

The pair walked along in silence, both enjoying each others company. Nothing had to be said, they were both comfortable around each other.

“You know, this is better than being at Noah’s I’m glad I came down” she smiled looking over at Jack.

“See, I told you” Jack smiled. “Or maybe your just enjoying my company, yeah that’s it” Jack said figuring it out.

Martha laughed and rolled her eyes. “Oh yeah definitely, Jack Holden is just so hot” Martha mocked Jack’s voice.

“I’m glad you agree” he replied as he moved closer and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. He smiled down at her, what he wouldn’t do to have her back in his arms permanently. He didn’t know whether to do anything right now, did Martha want a relationship with him or not?. There was only one way to find out and that was to take a chance.
