So what does everyone look for in a fic concerning a tv show? Home and Away to be more precise?

The most important thing to me is that the characters behave in a believable way. If they're meant to be out of character, that's fine, but I prefer that to happen in oneshots cause it's hard for me to get invested in long term fics if i don't believe in the characters.

Perfect example. That JaCorey fic. While it's funny, I can't invest long-term because I don't believe Corey and Jack as a couple, lol. There's just no universe in which that works for me. And IF they were a couple, Jack would totally be the b*tch :P

I also like to have plots that are well thought out and explained so that I know that the writer has a plan and I'm not going to be disappointed. Even fics that don't get finished are still worthwhile if you can see that it had a purpose at some point :)

Tasha's Holden fic hasn't been updated in a while, and I'm starting to wonder if it's been abandoned. Even so, I'm glad to have read it because it's well written and well thought out and the characters are all spot on :)

I also have to be in a certain mood to read fic. If I'm feeling down, I don't want to be reading about teen angst. If I'm feeling bored I don't want to read something that has a long laborious set up...

I mostly go for characters I like, catchy titles/topic leads, author, and reviewers. I don't like to read at the best of times so I'm rather selective about what I spend my time on.

The title’s important. If it’s called something like ‘Love Hurts’ I’m not going to bother. But I can read anything that’s well written; that’s what it all boils down to. By well written I mean coherent and if the person has a gift for language, even better, but that’s pretty rare. Perhaps the most important thing then is character…I love a fic that can capture the essence of the characters it writes about. That’s the hardest thing but it’s what makes a fic stand out. This doesn’t mean I’m adverse to taking the character in a new direction but it should still resonate as that person so to speak. Also I far prefer fics that don’t centre around one couple; that just tends to end up in some sycophantic love-fest. Which, unfortunately, is what most fics are, and why I only read about three or four on this board. I do recognise they have an audience…it’s just not me. :)

Yes, that's why I didn't think your Robbie/Jack one was one of your best efforts. To me Robbie and Jack as a couple just doesn't work - it could never be meaningful in the same way Randy/Luc is.

Umm....I am not sure what I look for. I know a lot of people love Jack and Martha, but I am not a fan, and don't read them (MANY of them) I read a few, but not a lot. I obviously am not going to read one that already has 48 pages, unless it's something like Bay Crush, which I loved! I do like the whole Bay stories, but I do like ones with specific characters, too. The title's important, and I often click, read the beginning, and see what I think. I don't like it totally lovey-dovey, and the Martha Jack, we're a perfect couple ones I don't read, but I think it's great to have a variety on this board, so everyone can have their pick...

Aw... I really like that one. I think you might have missed the point. But I suppose that's fair, seeing as I was working off three pages of summarised backstory which I only alluded to briefly in that thread, lol...

It wasn't really meant to be a Robbie/Jack fic as if they're the new hottest couple. It was pretty much meant to be a random moment of misplaced feelings from both sides, which is why I ended it where I did. Some people wanted me to keep writing, but there was nowhere for it to go. As you say, it would have been meaningless. Robbie and Jack didn't want each other. Robbie wanted Kim and Tash, and Jack wanted Martha. They couldn't have those people so they just held onto what they did have, such as it was...

Oh, now I'm going to cry again. That fic gets to me, lol.

Moving on...

Awww, you called Randy and Lucas meaningful :D. No one's ever called them meaningful... except me :P. You probably don't actually mean it in a good way, like they could work together, you probably mean that they're so bad for each other that it has to spell entertainment, lol.. ah well, either way I'm happy Thanks :D

Sorry, didn't mean to make you cry :D Yeah I don't know, I just don't picture Jack kissing Rob, no matter the circumstances. But as you said, I don't know the back-story.

No, I definitely think Randy and Luc could work together...as long as he doesn't turn out to be some evil psychotic user...I guess I'll just have to wait and see. <_<

What do people think of introducing orignal characters; I wasn't sure how that would go down when I started the 'A Brit in the Bay' series & I don't seem to remember it being specifically commented on, so I'd just like to get people's thoughts on the matter.

Hooray! :D

No rush, I understand completely. It's just that you usually update so frequently that I was getting worried.

Original characters. I'm generally not a fan, but then there is Randy. And I love him... I did bring him in "as" Robbie at the start though, so I don't know if he counts :P. You're probably going to be more attatched to your own characters than someone else's, so... I'd say as a rule, I don't like reading about them. That's not to say there's anything wrong with originals. I'm usually just too lazy to have to figure out what a whole new character looks and acts like in my head and stuff :P. I don't know if that helps.
