I love original characters, returning characters or generally throwing something different into the mix. I'm attracted to stories that are different, I love unconventional or AU pairings and I don't have a problem with such pairings provided they're well written. If a pairing is well written and there's a connection between the characters in the story then I have no problem with seeing them together, whether it's past characters, original characters or AU pairings. However if it's just done for the sake of it then I struggle to believe it.

Generally I don't mind couples and romance, or 'fluffy' fics but in order to keep me interested in stories like that, I have to feel something for the characters. If a story is on just one couple or an individual character it has to be really well written for me, really emotional and genuinely make me feel something. I can't read a fic about one or two characters unless I can actually feel something towards them.

I love stories where there's focus on more than one character. I love it when there's lots going on and different characters and events interact, maybe because that's my own preference in writing but I just find fics with lots of events really interesting. Providing, as I think Emmasi said, that events are followed through. I hate big dramatic storylines that then move straight on to the next event without taking time to explore how a character reacts to things. I love seeing how characters react to certain events and I hate it when to me storylines just end rather than dealing with the aftermath. I hate the way that happens on Home and Away too.

What do people think of introducing orignal characters; I wasn't sure how that would go down when I started the 'A Brit in the Bay' series & I don't seem to remember it being specifically commented on, so I'd just like to get people's thoughts on the matter.

I think introducing original characters turns a mere fanfic into a STORY. :)

I personally have nothing against it; it takes more imagination and I don't see how that could ever be a bad thing. However i don't know what kind of reception you'd get here. I started writing a fic with two new characters and they are the focus of my story, but I don't think I'd post it here because readers probably wouldn't want to invest in people they don't know :D

There are some fics I don't like because they have TOO many original characters! I'm not having a dig at it, and other people might like it, but the one set in 2026 had a LOT of new characters, so i didn't like it as much. I had to introduce two (three counting Annabelle, who doesn't really count) into my fic, so it would make sense! But too many makes me miss the old characters!

I find that if you have the normal characters with a few originals here and there the fic works well and it also gives a chance for the writter to create a character. Putting 20 original characters in would be odd. ive seen some originals and i think it works really well.

If a story was well written and contains lots of original characters I'd still read it because I like stories in general but I'm not sure if it'd still be classed as a fanfiction.

I used to stay away from original characters because I knew all about the Mary Sue factor in fanfics? Anyone else heard of that? It's basically a character who is you. The way to tell a Mary Sue from an original character is if they are perfect in every way and multiple characters fall for this one person, even if it is out of character, you have a mary sue.

I use Shane & Casey in some of my fics. They've kept me sane for two years so they deserve a little appreciation, ya know

I have a small writersblock problem. I think it's because I feel no one is reading my long fics on ff.net so I have no drive. I did sit and plan out a new fic the other day, based on the what if Hayley had died instead of Noah.

Hayley dies, Kim is there to comfort Noah. No more writers block :D
