Let's think about this rationally. You can understand Martha wanting to be alone for a while. It doesn't exactly look (or probably feel right) coming out of a pretty developed relationship, and then heading straight into another. Even if that new relationship is with Jack Hoden...

Kinda felt sorry for Carl too. I hope he doesn't come back, seeking revenge
