The extras aren't very exciting. There's only about 2 minutes of Rhys in the interviews and then there's just a photo gallery. Most of them are promo shots.

Underbelly criminals to steal AFI Awards glory

LOW-budget film The Black Balloon and romance thriller Unfinished Sky top nominations for this year's AFI Awards, but TV drama Underbelly could be the success story of the "film" event.

Underbelly picked up eight nods in nominations revealed at the Sydney Theatre yesterday, stealing the show from traditional film entries.

Cast including Vince Colosimo, Gyton Grantley, Damian Walshe-Howling, Kat Stewart and Madeleine West are all up for gongs, while the Nine Network series is favourite to win best TV drama series against City Homicide, Rush and Satisfaction.

Colosimo, Grantley and Walshe-Howling were swamped by media after the announcement.

"It's a testament to what a great show it was," said Grantley, who is up for best lead actor in a TV series.

"I'm really excited, I'm thrilled . . . I think Underbelly stands out by far."

In the more traditional categories, The Black Balloon, starring Rhys Wakefield, Toni Collette and Gemma Ward, leads the field with 11 nominations, followed closely by Unfinished Sky, starring William McInnes, with 10.

Both are nominated for best film, with thrillers The Jammed and The Square, which received seven nominations each.

Colosimo said he hoped Joel and Nash Edgerton would be recognised for The Square. "Hopefully, they win one or two awards; it would be great for them," he said.

Stephen Curry, who will host the ceremony, said he hoped McInnes would win an AFI for his role in Unfinished Sky. McInnes plays a farmer who takes in an Afghan woman after she flees an Outback brothel. "He is astonishing," he said.

For The Black Balloon, the AFI nominations follow a number of accolades, including a Crystal Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival.

The coming-of-age story about a family dealing with an autistic son is a semi-autobiographical movie by debut director Elissa Down.

Wakefield will compete against McInnes, Guy Pearce and David Roberts for best lead actor. Noni Hazlehurst (Bitter and Twisted), Monic Hendrickx (Unfinished Sky), and Emma Lung and Veronica Sywak (The Jammed) are nominated for best actress.

Maeve Dermody (Black Water) is among nominees for best supporting actress.

Among those nominated for the international AFI award are Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight, Eric Bana for The Other Boleyn Girl, Nicole Kidman for The Golden Compass, and Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

The 50th AFIs will be held at the Princess Theatre on December 6.

Black Balloon up against Twilight in US release

470balloon_twilight,0.jpg

While Australia and its stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman steal the spotlight, the year's most successful Aussie film, The Black Balloon, will open quietly in the US next week.

The family comedy/drama starring Toni Collette, Gemma Ward and Rhys Wakefield is Australia's highest grossing film of 2008 so far, with box office takings of $2.3 million.

The Black Balloon also leads the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award nominations with 11 nods, including best film.

The winners will be announced next weekend, at the same time as the the film's US release.

"It opens on December 5 which is sort of great timing because that's the same time as the AFI Awards, so hopefully there's a good planet alignment or something and it bodes well for the film," director Elissa Down said.

Down has just returned from Los Angeles where she was promoting the film, which is a coming-of-age story about a family dealing with an autistic son.

Hollywood website LAist.com is recommending The Black Balloon over the number one film in the US, teen smash hit Twilight: "This season, if you want to see a movie about teen romance and mentally challenged characters, go see Twilight. Or you can decide you want to see a good film, and check out The Black Balloon instead."

Down said it was too early to tell whether hype surrounding the film Australia would drum up interest in other Aussie movies, but she was pleased with how the film had been received so far.

"We had our US release at the Hamptons Film Festival, and we had this film symposium in New Jersey, so there's been a lot of screenings to get an awareness out about the film," Down said.

"So far the reviews that have been coming out have been great."

The Black Balloon was nominated for 10 awards at the Inside Film (IF) Awards earlier this month, but picked up just one, for box office achievement.

With that in mind, Down said she did feel pressure ahead of the AFI Awards.

"There is a bit of a pressure because when you're the leading contender and then you don't come with the goods, everyone's like, 'oh no!'," she said.

"Like at the IF Awards, you've got everyone there and you've got your family there you get excited, and then you feel a bit deflated like, oh what did we do?

"But we've had a great run - I think we've won like 17 or 18 awards at the moment, so we're doing ok."

The AFI Awards will be held over two nights on December 5 and 6 at Melbourne's iconic Princess Theatre, hosted by Stephen Curry and Julia Zemiro.

Eric Bana, Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, Damian Walshe-Howling, Chris Lilley, Gyton Grantley and Rebecca Gibney are just some of the stars who will walk the red carpet.
