Chapter Twenty Five

“She’s not telling us anything.” Peter said with a sigh, as he talked with McGrath and Jack outside his office “She’s hiding what they did. If they abused her so badly she’s not even telling us, then who knows how she’ll deal with this.”

“Knowing Martha, she doesn’t want us to think she’s weak, that she can’t handle this. She also probably doesn’t want Jack to get so riled up he does something he’ll regret.” McGrath stated, looking at Jack.

“I should try talking to her alone.” Peter said, gathering the stuff to try again.

“I think I should be in there!” Jack argued, heading towards the door but Peter held him back.

“What if she’s not telling us because of you? What if she doesn’t want you to hate her for what happened to her?” Pete said, heading into the room.

-------

Martha frowned as Peter closed the door “Where’s Jack.” She asked nervously.

“He’s taking care of some other matters Martha.” Peter said kindly, sitting next to her.

“I’d like Jack in here!” She said, looking around for him even though she knew he wasn’t there.

“He’ll come in later. I thought I’d just like to have a chat to you?” He asked her. He looked into her eyes, surprised by what he found there. This wasn’t the Martha Holden he knew. The Martha he knew would have been desperate to help him, looking eager, her eyes keen to help. But this Martha, her eyes held signs of the hardship she’d bore in the past months, her eyes had lost the eager look about them. They were cold and distant, and he knew he’d have no luck.

“A chat about what?” She asked sharply.

“A chat about Ashton Nader, Kylie Deeks and what they did to you.”

“What they did to me is none of your business Detective.” She snapped.

“I just want to help.” Peter said, looking helplessly at her.

“I don’t need your help.” She said, flinging her chair back as she marched out the door, and raced out of the station.

--------

Jack ran down the beach, spotting a familiar form kneeling down on the beach, the waves crashing amongst her body. He hurried beside her, kneeling next to her and ignoring the waves hitting his uniform, he wrapped his arms tightly around her sobbing frame as he tried to somehow comfort her, with all the mixed up emotions that she was feeling “It’s alright.” He said softly to her.

She continued staring out into the ocean, she didn’t seem to have registered that her husband was beside her. Her eyes showed a blank, her body wasn’t reacting to Jack’s hold.

He saw her distance, her blankness, and behind it he saw what other people, people like Peter, McGrath, everyone wouldn’t be able to see. Her pain and hurt, something she was trying to hide from them “Please talk to me.” He whispered, his face close to hers. Again she showed him nothing but a blank. She wasn’t dealing with any of this, and he could see it. He turned her face towards his, not even gaining a blink from her “Please.” He pleaded with her.

“Please what?” Came her voice, timid and afraid.

“Please talk to me!” He said desperately, looking at her with pleading visible in his worried brown eyes “Tell me!” He begged.

The only noise the pair heard was the waves crashing against them, they only felt the waves against them, as well as the other person’s body close to their own. Martha finally broke the silence and looked sadly at Jack “Tell you what?” She said, her voice filled with pain.

“Tell me what he did. And if you don’t want me to write it in the report then so be it, I won’t.” He promised her.

“He abused me, he neglected me, where do you want me to start?” She cried, leaning against him.

“Wherever you want to start.”

----------

“I’m glad you told me.” He said quietly. He’d been told about the labour, the fact that they intended on her having her baby in the house, the fact that she’d sometimes go without food for days, especially after the baby was born. The physical abuse, the emotional abuse, everything. That she couldn’t handle anymore. She’d finally let it all out. She’d told him about the death threats before this incident, the day she first gotten back to the bay, but that was all she’d told him about previously.

“I’m glad I told you.” She said quietly, looking at him “But you cannot tell McGrath, Peter, anyone. You cannot tell them Jack.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want their pity.” She said, looking at him “I told you in confidence and I expect it to stay that way.” She told him sternly.

“Alright.” He agreed, even though he was dying to charge them with this.

---------

“Jack you need to tell us!” Peter urged him.

“She’s my wife and she’s told me this in confidence!” He argued with him “I don’t break my promises, especially to my wife!” He snapped.

“I know you don’t want to but think about it. With this solved we can put them away for longer!” He pressed.

“No!” He said loudly.

Peter sighed, looking at a furious Jack “So she won’t consent to us knowing what happened?” He sighed.

“No she won’t.” He said, not giving any answers away.

“Jack, you need to understand what you’re doing by not telling us!” He said, starting to get annoyed with the constable.

“I’m not telling you!” He said firmly “Now if you don’t mind, my wife would be happier if I was with her.” He said rudely.

--------

“You didn’t tell him, did you?” Martha asked, looking horrified and hurt.

“I swear I didn’t.” He assured her, wrapping his arms around her “You know I never thought I’d hold you again.” He said truthfully.

“I did wonder if I’d ever see you again.” She admitted.

“You have.” He said quietly.

“I have an idea.” She said, untangling herself from his tight hold “How about we go to the diner for dinner, the four of us, so you can get to know Toniya a bit more.” She suggested, holding her hand out for his as if they’d never had this conversation.

------

“Jack Holden.” Jack answered his phone, grinning happily, and then the smile fell from his face “What?” He asked, startled then a look of fear filled his face.

“What?” Martha whispered, scared.

“Bad news. It’s Sam. They have to release her because they have no evidence she was involved.”

“But I heard her!” She said desperately “Please Jack, do something!” She begged him.

“We can’t!” He said miserably “I wish to god I could.”

“What can we do?”

“We need some form of evidence against her.” Jack said evenly.

“Like wha- Oh, I know what.” She said quietly.

“That isn’t enough. You never saw her, she never came in contact with you, and she left no evidence she’d been at the house. She’s got custody of Rory again and Peter's sure she’s coming back to the bay.” Jack said glumly.
