Chapter Twenty Six.

“I don’t need to be watched like I’m going to die any second.” Martha said quietly.

“We’re watching you because we want to protect you. Sam will obviously come back, targeting you and maybe your daughters. I’m sure you don’t want Isabel or Toniya to be harmed by her? If you don’t, maybe give us a break, please Martha?” Peter asked her tiredly. He didn’t mean to sound harsh but he was tired. He’d barely slept in a day, desperate to find evidence against Sam. He’d gone home much later than normal and awoken much earlier than normal, determined to save Martha.

“Sorry.” She apologised, resuming her fun activity of staring at the ground.

“No, I’m sorry.” Peter sighed “I just don’t want you missing for another year, Sam has the capability to kill you, and she wanted to last time she had you. I just, don’t want you or any of your family put in harm’s way.” He said, rubbing his aching forehead.

“Have you had any sleep?” She asked him seriously.

“That is beside the point.”

“You haven’t, have you?” She demanded.

“Neither has Jack, because we don’t want you going missing for a year again. While you were away, your husband was in work every day trying to find you, he’d barely ever take a day off.” Peter said, then turning away “You’re grandfather’s nearly here, so you’re nearly ready to leave.” He added.

“Great.” She muttered, ignoring Peter reproachful look.

------

“Grandad I’m going for a walk!” Martha called to him.

“I’ll come too, I wanted to check out how things are at the bar.” He lied, heading towards the door.

Martha looked at her grandfather “I can walk by myself. Isabel and Toni are with me, and I can look after myself. I’m not a baby, grandad.” She reminded him.

“Is it so wrong that I want to protect you love?” He said, his matured face creasing with worry.

“It’s not wrong, but it’s very annoying when I’m being watched every five seconds. I can’t even take my daughters for a walk.” She said, folding her arms defiantly.

“Alright, but expect a few calls love!” He said, sighing as she walked out the door. They were all desperate to protect Martha, but she refused to be treated like a little baby. He could only hope that she wasn’t about to walk into danger.

--------

“What the hell are you doing here?” Sam snapped at Martha coldly.

Martha whirled around, grabbing Toniya into her arms out of the pram “I could ask you that same thing. How dare you come back here after everything you did to me!” She said furiously, holding Isabel to her side with one arm, and Toni to her chest with the other.

“I did nothing to you Martha. It’s all in your imagination.” She smirked at her “You were always good at imagining things weren’t you? You probably even imagined Ash’s cheating on you. Then, you claimed Ash’s baby to be Jack’s, just to take him away from me. But it’s not going to work. I will get him, he deserves better than you. You stabbed him in the back, you did so many horrible things that I’m surprised he even hung around long enough to get you pregnant for a second time in the first place. But maybe he just wants you to have enough kids then he’ll do a runner. Maybe that’s his logic, it’s the only logic I see.”

“Jack would never ever do that me bitch!” She said coldly, her face harsh “He’d never do that to anyone. Not even scum like you, Jack would never take a child away from the mother!” She said, no longer afraid of Sam.

“Are you sure? See, while I was here, I noticed a few things. I’m sure he won’t hang around long, I mean surely he’s getting bored with a woman who needs to be baby-sat all the time. Surely that would happen, right?” She said, purposely triggering for Martha’s insecurities, and knowing by her face that it was working “I mean, you were never really a good wife to him. You always complained about his hours, complained about everything. When you didn’t realise that your husband had a very important job. The job at keeping everyone safe. But you’re so selfish that you didn’t see that. But, I saw that. I realised it, and I encouraged it. He did his best, the best he could, and he was pretty good with Rory as well. Rory’s like the son you’ve never been able to give him. Didn’t he tell you that he was desperate for a son?” She asked, a question that could be called innocent but most people would know it wasn’t.

Martha looked at her, before storming off in the other direction.

Sam grinned as she turned, her red hair shining in the sun. She looked at her watch, realising she had to go pick up Rory. She headed towards the car, knowing that divorce was just around the corner for Jack and Martha.

------

“What’s wrong?” Jack asked, bewildered.

“I don’t know mate but it’s not good.” Alf told him grimly, looking up from feeding Toni “She came home, and ran upstairs in a huff. I offered to mind Toni and Isabel, so she’s still up there.”

“I know what’s wrong.” Came Tasha’s soft voice from the back door. She walked in, nodding a greeting to Jack and Alf “She met Sam, and I heard a fair bit. We all know how insecure Mac is about her marriage-”

“She’s insecure?” He asked, shocked. He sat down, his head in his hands, feeling Tasha’s sympathetic hand on her shoulder “She’s my wife and I never even noticed she felt insecure!” He said, slamming his hands down hard on the wooden table.

“She’s been having troubles, and she’s been desperately hiding them from you. She’s been having her insecurities for over a year. She confided in me not long ago. I saw her with Sam, and was about to talk to her but she stormed off and wouldn’t listen to me. I told Sam off but I don’t think it did any good. But Jack, my advice to you would be to give her a bit of time. I’m going to talk to her first, I’m sure it would be best.” Tash said, heading up the staircase.

-----

“How’d it go?” Jack asked, as Tash came down two hours later.

“Not good. Sam shook her up badly, and on top of everything she’s really struggling.” She said, hesitating, her hand closed around something, which she showed Jack.

“No.” He whispered “She can’t have.” He said, looking at Tash.

“She has, and she’s determined it’s going to stay that way.” Tash said, putting her hand on the table and emptying the contents.
