Chapter Thirty Three

Kim sat by the beach, thinking three months later. His life had become a complete and total mess. He was now officially divorced from the woman he still loved, even though she believed he didn’t. To make matters worse, Rachel had gained sole custody of Marnie, something she’d been delighted with. He looked up the beach, and started fuming. There was Tim, with Marnie and Tyler by his side and no Rachel in sight. He got up, marching over to them “Marnie, come with dad?” He asked her, reaching for her hand.

Tim held Marnie’s hand “Mate, it’s not your day to visit her.” He told him calmly.

“She’s my daughter, I’ll visit her whenever I want.” He told Tim coldly, but was upset when Marnie broke away from him

“I want to stay with Tim.” She said quietly.

“Why, angel, I’m your daddy not him.” He tried to encourage her.

“I want to stay with Timmy.” She repeated.

“You’ve turned her against me.” Kim snapped at Rachel, storming into her work.

Rachel raised her eyebrows at Kim “I didn’t do anything.” She said quietly.

“Yes you did. I saw them on the beach this morning, and she ditched me for your loser boyfriend.” He said furiously.

“Well, maybe that’s because for the last three years of her life you’d rather be at any place, a pub maybe, or in the city, or out partying, than at home with me and your daughter. That’s why I never had another kid with you.” She said coldly.

“You never fell pregnant again, that’s why we never had another kid.” He told her.

“I was on the pill.” She snapped.

“That’s why you never fell pregnant again.” He said slowly.

“Damn right. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have patients to attend to.”

“Are you sure this is right, Tim?” Rachel asked him quietly for the fifth time three weeks later.

“I’m sure.” He grinned at his girlfriend “I mean, you and I love each other, so why not move in together? I mean, look at this place. There are four bedrooms, a rumpus room, and a study, which leaves room for another baby, and Tyler and Marnie get rooms to themselves. What’s not to love?” He asked.

“I guess you’re right.” She grinned.

“Dad, is this our news house?” Ty asked his dad.

“Yeah, it is mate.” Tim grinned at him.

“Really mummy, is it?” Marnie in turn asked her mother.

“Yup sweetie, it is. I promise you we’ll be happy here.” Rachel said, bending down to her young daughter’s level.

“Okay.” She nodded slightly to her mum.

Jack stood quietly in the shadows at the beach, watching Martha play with Isabel and Toniya at sunset. She looked happy and relaxed, and she was chasing them around. She was obviously their mother, the girls both looked like her and acted in similar ways to her. He wished she’d come home to him, it was really quiet and lonely now that Rachel and Marnie had moved out, and he hated the nights when the girls weren’t there, at least Martha was with her family, but Jack owned his own house and he didn’t want to move out, he knew that even if he was gone for a few weeks the house would fall into disrepair. The bathrooms would need cleaning, the lawn would need mowing, the carpet would need vacuuming, the shelves and other places needed dusting. He just hated living life alone, away from his wife. He sighed, then looked down, changing from his depressed thoughts. He started walking towards them, grabbing Toni.

Martha turned when she heard Toni’s squeal, grinning at Jack “You got her then.” She nodded, slightly breathless from chasing the pair.

“Yup. One trouble maker down, another one left.” He told her, grabbing for Isabel but only just missing.

“See, you’re pretty slow.” Martha grinned at him.

“Thanks.” He said, smirking at her.

“Alright, I think they’ve had a long enough break.” She told him, calling Isabel to come, that they were going home “So, what are your plans tonight?” She asked Jack.

“Just have dinner by myself probably.” He told her. He noticed her look at him quickly then back at the area in front of her “Unless you want to come over, with the girls? They can come for a while.” He offered.

She turned to him, unable to resist a smile “Sure.” She nodded to him, then turned to Isabel, who was holding her hand “Want to go to daddy’s for dinner?” She asked her, grinning at the young girl’s nod “Alright sweetie.” She told her, as they headed to Jack’s.

“I forgot you knew how to cook.” Martha told him later that night.

“Well, I do know how to cook, I can cook pretty well.” He told her, watching his sleepy daughters.

“Maybe they should stay here tonight.” Martha said quietly.

“Are you sure? I have them in two days, you’ve got four days this week.” He reminded her.

“Yeah, I know, but they look so settled and so happy to be at home. I guess it’s pretty different than at Sal’s, there’s always something going on, always someone there. It must be good having some quiet.” She said, already picking up a dozing Toni “I’ll help you put them to bed, then I’ll leave. I’m working in the morning.” She said calmly.

“Alright.” He nodded.
