Chapter Twelve:

“I don’t have to go, I could stay till Jack gets back.” Tash offered Martha.

“I’m fine, Tash. I don’t need a baby sitter. I’ve only got Ruby to worry about, nothing major. If it was Harley then maybe yes, I’d ask you to stay. But Ruby’s five. She can take care of herself.” She said, smiling at Tasha “Thanks for your worry but I’m seriously alright.” She assured her.

“Alright, seeing as you’ve been in that chair and home for a few days I’ll leave. But call me if you can’t handle it alright?” She said, grinning as she got up from her chair.

“Thank you. It took Jack a fair bit of encouragement to get him to leave as well. He thinks I can’t do anything by myself.” She said with a sigh.

“Bye!” Tash called, heading out the door.

----------------------------------

Martha turned her attention from the TV when she heard the phone ring. She wheeled herself into the room to get the phone, sighing in annoyance when she realised Jack had put it too far for her to reach without stretching out and pushing her chair forward. She did that, but she hadn’t checked the floor. An innocent pile of things was there, and before Martha knew it, her wheels had gotten caught and due to the force the chair had flung her forward, where she lay on the ground.

---------------------------------

Jack frowned, Martha hadn’t answered the phone which was unusual. She knew to answer the phone, because otherwise he’d panic. He’d taken Harley out to Noah’s, where his dad and brother were for a little get together. Ruby was often left with Martha, because she could help her when she was in trouble.

“Trouble?” Luc asked him, noticing Jack’s frown.

“She didn’t answer. And she hasn’t rung back. I let it ring out, and she hasn’t answered. She knew it’s better to answer otherwise I panic and everything. She’d check the message I left.”

“Maybe she’s busy with Ruby. Maybe she’s giving her a bath mate, don’t worry I’m sure she’s fine. She’s got Ruby there.” Tony pointed out.

“I’ll ring soon though.” Jack said, sighing as he put his mobile in his pocket, still worried.

--------------------------

Martha groaned as she lay sprawled across the kitchen floor. Damn Jack for putting the phone so far away. He knew to have it on the counter. She looked around “Ruby!” She called out loudly. Nothing. No answer “Ruby!” She called louder, straining her hand for the phone. She sighed as she heard a message. It was Jack. Judging by his tone and words, he was worried that she hadn’t picked up. He had every reason to worry because at the moment, she was in pretty bad trouble.

------------------------

“Dad I’m gunna head home. Can you mind Harley? If there’s any trouble, I’ll get him when I can okay?” Jack said half an hour later.

“Alright mate. We’ll mind him as long as you need us too. He’ll be fine.” Tony assured him “And so will Martha.” He said “But your right, go check her.” He said.

“I will.” Jack replied, gathering his stuff and saying goodbye to his family.

“Call us and let us know!” Luc said, before Jack’s phone rang.

“That was Tash.” Jack said grimly “Mac fell out of her chair.”

---------------------------

“Martha are you okay?” Jack called, rushing in to find her still on the ground.

“I couldn’t lift her.” Tash said with a frustrated look.

“It’s alright.” Jack said, putting his arms under Martha and carefully lifting her into the straightened chair “You okay?” He asked, clearly upset and slightly worried.

“I’ll be okay.” She promised him, straightening her.

“See Mac I knew I shouldn’t have left you.” Tash said seriously.

“I don’t need to be baby-sat.” She said stubbornly.

“Not necessarily baby sat. Just cared for.” Jack said gently “You’ve had a major accident and you need time to recover.” Jack said, taking her hand.

She pulled her hand from his grasp.

“I’ll leave you guys.” Tash said softly, quickly heading out the door.

“Martha, please.” He said softly.

“Leave me alone Jack.” She said angrily, pushing herself into their room.

-----------------------

“Martha!” Jack called, heading in. Martha had been determined he leave her there alone while he went to get some stuff. He frowned, couldn’t see her anywhere. Then saw the note. Gone to physio. That was all it said. Jack knew that Martha had been going with him recently. He sighed, this was really affecting her and he hated seeing her so hurt.

----------------------

“Where’s Jack?” Rachel asked when Martha appeared, alone, at the physio session.

Martha shrugged, not saying anything about that. She didn’t need to be baby-sat and she remained adamant about that. She was a big girl and she could do things without being watched. She needed to do thing without being watched.

“Why isn’t he coming Martha?” Rachel asked evenly.

“It’s nothing.” She said sullenly. She wasn’t going to spill her guts to Rachel. She was going to get through this, even if she did it alone.

“Well we might need Jack for some of the stuff we’re going to do.” She said, looking at her “What’s going on Martha? You’re not normally like this. Last time you were desperate to beat this, desperate to fight and you were happy. Now you’re obviously unhappy.” She said gently.

“It’s nothing!” She said, starting to get upset.

“I’m not starting this session until you tell me. We need Jack’s help, I’m sure you’d rather have him help you than a stranger.”

Martha paused. While she’d rather have Jack’s help than a total stranger’s help, her pride forbade her from seeking his help. She didn’t want to be treated like a baby and never left on her own.

When she didn’t answer, Rachel looked at her curiously “Is everything alright?” She repeated. She looked up at the door “Hey Jack.” She greeted him.

Martha turned, surprised. She didn’t think he’d have bothered coming down. But that didn’t make her too much happier with him. She sighed and turned around again.

“I think we all need to have a little chat.” Rachel suggested, indicating to Jack to sit down.

He obediently sat down, he sat beside Martha.

“What’s going on?” She asked.

Jack looked at Martha, who didn’t look at him “Pretty much Martha thinks she doesn’t need to be baby-sat and doesn’t realise that I just want to be around her, not baby-sit her. I nearly lost her with the accident, and I can’t lose her so I’m staying around her as much as possible.”

“I don’t need people around me every hour of every day of every month of every year!” She snapped “I need some me time, and every time I have time to myself something happens. I can’t even look after my own children.” She said.

Jack took her hand, relieved when she didn’t pull away “That doesn’t mean anything. You just had a serious accident, and I want to be around you. So does Ruby. And you did look after her. She was fine, and she was helping you. There isn’t anything wrong with that.” He said, squeezing her hand “Please, Martha.” He said “I want to be around you because I can’t lose you.” He said, looking at her.

She looked at him, and sighed.

“Are we okay to start physio?” Jack asked Rachel.

“If Martha is.” She replied.

“Yeah. I am.” She mumbled.

------------------------

After Jack had helped Martha change into her swimmers, they wheeled her down to the water, and Jack carefully carried her in, and gently placed her in the water.

Martha smiled when she saw what care Jack was taking to make sure he didn’t hurt her. She partially regretted not asking him to go with her to physio, but she was relieved when he did.

Chapter Thirteen:

Martha shivered slightly as Jack gently lowered her into the pool, clinging tightly around his neck. This was her first time in this pool and she didn’t know how it was going to be.

“Alright.” Rachel said, also in the water “The reason you’re in the hydro pool, is so that you can move around freely. Do your best to float, and Jack will be holding your back because you should be focusing on lifting your legs out of the water as much as possible.” She instructed, looking where Jack was holding Martha securely in his strong arms.

Martha moved her hands up and gripped Jack’s before she did anything. She regretted getting angry with him, she just hated her injury. She felt Rachel slowly move her legs up, so she was floating. That made her clutch to Jack even harder, she was relieved it wasn’t a stranger helping her. She slowly tried to lift her leg, managing to lift it a little bit before she couldn’t force herself anymore. She let it go back into the water.

“That’s alright, you can’t expect full movement immediately. Don’t worry.” Rachel assured her.

Jack watched as Martha struggled, squeezing her hand again “You can do it.” He said softly, encouraging her.

Martha gritted her teeth, Jack’s encouragement helped her. She lifted her leg a little higher this time, it was her right side. She’d started with her left side, which wasn’t her natural strong side. She gave a loud gasp of pain when she tried to get it harder, sobbing with the pain that had shot through her side.

Jack stopped bothering to make her float when he heard her sobbing. He pulled her across, sideways, so he could hold her easier and held her tightly till the spasms went from her side.

“Are you okay to continue?” Rachel asked “I know that probably gave you a big shock, but that’s just your muscle saying it’s not strong enough to do that. You’ve not tried lifting it like that in a fair while, about two to three weeks, which is why we got you moving as quickly as we could. Imagine how bad it would feel if we waited longer.” She said, giving her an encouraging smile. She worked with Martha for about another fifteen, before Martha finally admitted defeat. She’d had two more muscle spasms and it was harder to continue. Rachel decided not to push her, she knew how badly Martha must be hurting.

“Rachel could we stay in the pool though?” Martha asked, wondering what Rachel would say.

Rachel looked at Jack, who nodded “Alright, as long as Jack’s with you.”

“He’s not leaving. If he does I’ll smack him across the head.” Martha said with a shrug.

“Violence isn’t the answer.” Jack said, grinning at her, giving Rachel a nod as she left “Well, you just want to float?” He asked her.

“Not really. More like sort of stand, you know, normal position?” She said, looking at him “I haven’t been in the standing position for a long time.” She sighed.

Jack nodded, helping her and putting his arms around her waist “It’s good, what Rachel said. We can still have kids.” He said quietly.

“Yeah, I’m thrilled.” She said smiling “But you’ll have to lift your pregnant wife everywhere.” She pointed out “I want to get married before we have another child.” She admitted.

“I want to get married soon.” Jack said, turning to face her, still holding her protectively and firmly.

“What?” She said, surprised.

“I want to marry you soon.” He said simply “You don’t have to worry about anything, we can do it together and we will do it together. Unless you wanted to walk down the aisle.”

“We can do it differently. You and I could walk down the aisle, and you could carry me out to the car. That would work. If you want.” She said hastily.

“I’m happy. I just want the world to know how much you mean to me.” He said, kissing her gently.

“Thank you.” She said softly.

“Had enough water?” He asked, playfully splashing her in the face.

“Yeah.” She said, ducking away from the water “Let’s go get changed.”

---------------------------------------

“Well I guess that means we’re ready to celebrate!” Tony said, smiling at the happy couple.

“Yeah, again. It’ll probably just be family and close friends, we don’t need much more.” Martha said, smiling at them.

“Come on Martha. Admit it, you don’t want to do too much work.” Luc said, grinning at her.

“No, that’s Jack. Not me.” She said, grinning.

“Oh, that’s why.” Tony grinned “Well, I’m happy for you. Really I am.” He assured them.

“Thanks Tony.” She said smiling.
