-lolly- Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Jane is mean. I don't like her. I hope Jack can change Martha's mind Great update Paris.
-ParaisGal- Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Chapter Sixteen: Two hours later, Jack cautiously knocked on Martha’s bedroom door. He looked in. Martha had moved herself to her bed, her wheelchair standing beside her. Obviously she’d got herself into bed okay “Martha?” He asked, opening the door fully and slowly walking towards the bed and sitting on it. She moved herself so she wasn’t laying on her stomach, with a bit of difficulty. She looked straight at him, obviously she’d been crying due to the state of her eyes. “Martha, please.” Jack said, reaching for her hand, but she removed it. “Jack, I’ve been thinking and I’ve realised I’ve been selfish. With me as your wife, you face problems. You can’t take promotions at work, you can’t take longer hours because you have to baby-sit your wife. That’s not fair.” She said, looking at him. “What?” Jack asked, panicking “Martha I don’t care about promotions. I don’t care about any of that and I don’t have to baby-sit you!” He said, looking at her “I can’t lose you!” He said, looking at her “Please, don’t do this.” “Jack, there’s no way around this.” She said, looking at him “Maybe now you’ll have a chance at a normal life.” She continued. “My life is normal. I’ve got my wife, my kids, my job. I’ve got everything I want but I won’t if you leave!” He said, now extremely worried that she was being totally serious. “Jack, please. I’ll sleep on the couch tonight. We're over. It's as simple as that.” She said, looking at him. “If someone has to sleep on the couch it will be me. Not you.” Jack said firmly, grabbing his pajamas. ------------------------- “I don’t know what to do.” Jack said, looking at Luc. He’d have liked to ask Tony, but Tony was rather protective of his sisters and brother. “She’s pretty determined to end your marriage then?” Luc asked him. “She kept on going on about how I’d have a chance at a normal life, and how it’d be a lot better if I didn’t have to baby-sit her, but I don’t think that. I love going home to her, I love her. But she just can’t see that.” Jack said, running his hand through his hair. Martha had taken Ruby out for a while, so he’d invited his brother around and found himself spilling his guts to his little brother. “She loves you, Jack. Hopefully she won’t be able to stay away for long.” Luc suggested. “I doubt that very much. She’s determined that this is the end of our marriage.” Jack said, looking glumly at the table. “How would she go on her own?” “I think she’d go alright, except if something happened, I wouldn’t be calling five times a day.” Jack said. “Hey Jack.” Tony said brightly, coming in and not noticing the tension between him and Jack in the air “There’s a party on tonight, you should come. Bring Martha.” Tony said. “Martha and I aren’t exactly together anymore.” Jack said coldly. “Why mate?” Tony asked, confused. “After the way Jane’s been treating her.” He said, having decided to bring this up and not caring about what happened. “Jane’s been treating her fine mate. Martha just has to get used to her, that’s all.” Tony said, brushing off the criticism Jack passed on about Jane “They both need to warm up to one another.” He looked at Jack, as though daring him to say more. “No she hasn’t. Last night was a perfect example. She was saying that I should go out with some other woman, suggesting that Martha wasn’t the one for me. If you didn’t hear that then you’re just stupid.” Jack said, glaring at him. “It’s true dad. Jane did say that.” Luc said, putting in his part. “She wouldn’t, she’d respect your decision because she’s your aunt.” Tony said. “She won’t! All you ever do is defend her and you never see what’s she’s like!” Jack yelled, storming into Harley’s room. -------------------------------- “I heard you and Jack have had a split.” Alf said, causing Martha to look up from what she was doing. “You heard.” She said flatly. “I did hear and I think you’re making a mistake. I saw Jack recently, and I heard him in a heated argument with Tony. He seemed very upset, and I know he wants the two of you to be together.” Alf said, looking at her. “Maybe we were wrong. Maybe this whole thing has just been a stupid waste of time.” Martha said, concentrating on Ruby’s drawing. “What if it hasn’t love? What if you two are really meant to be together for the rest of your lives? The only person stopping your marriage is you. Haven’t you ever heard that love conquers all?” He asked her. “What if we need more than just love grandad?” She asked seriously. “Then take it as it comes.” He said “Don’t make a big mistake.” He said wisely. -------------------------------- Martha sat at the diner, thinking about everything. She’d already taken her rings off, something which had caused a bit of a stir around the bay. She knew she didn’t want her and Jack to be over, but she knew that was what had to happen. She didn’t want to be a burden to Jack, he didn’t need an invalid wife along with two kids to look after. He deserved a full-bodied, capable person. She was distracted by a voice. “I heard.” Rachel said simply, sitting beside her. “You and the rest of the world.” She said, putting her head in her hands. “Are you sure about this Mac? I’ve seen plenty of couples where one partner has a disability, and they’ve come through strongly and together. One had five young children, yet they remained together. Jack wants to be with you, everyone knows that. It’s as plain as day.” “No it’s not.” She said, not looking at her. “Well you’ve got a physio session today, remember?” Rachel reminded her. ------------------------- “Hey Rach.” Jack said glumly. “Hey Jack. I’ve organised with Kim to mind the kids, because of Martha’s physio. Are you going to come?” She asked him. “Mac doesn’t want me there.” “Simple. I’ll take her to the pool, you be down there waiting. She needs your help, even if she won’t admit it. Before she has an accident when she’s at home alone because she’s refusing your help. I’ve seen it happen, and I don’t want Martha getting hurt.” She said firmly, heading towards the door “An hour Jack! Don’t be late!” She called as she left. -ParaisGal- Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Chapter Seventeen “What’s he doing here?” Martha asked, spotting Jack sitting with his ankles dipping in the pool. “He’s here to help.” Rachel said evenly. “I don’t need his help.” She said, stopping the wheelchair by the pool entrance. “We at least need his help to get you in the water.” Rachel pointed out. “I can try to walk if you support me.” She argued. “We’d be better with his help.” Rachel persisted. “Rachel please!” She said strongly. “Fine.” She muttered, putting Martha’s arm over her shoulder and put her on the gently sloping ramp. With Jack they always took the steps, with him carrying her in but Rachel wasn’t up to carrying a fully grown woman. Martha carefully put one foot in front of the other, feeling slightly scared on the slippery ground. Before she knew it, her weak legs gave way and she hit the ground and went sliding down. She felt Rachel’s arms desperately trying to keep her floating, so she wouldn’t drown, but she needed help. Help she didn’t seem to be getting. Suddenly she felt a pair of strong arms grasp her and lift her out of the water. She felt herself shaking, she was terrified after that. She looked up, and found she wasn’t surprised when she realised her rescuer was Jack. She put her hands to her mouth, the shock of being helpless in the water still fresh in her mind. Jack felt Martha shaking in his arms, knowing what a shock she’d received. He’d seen her go through without him even though they all knew she needed help both getting in and in the water, and then she’d slipped. He’d run over, and leapt in the water, and grabbed her tightly wanting her out of the water. He held her close “Shh it’s alright.” He soothed her. She felt Jack hold her closer, and she let him, partly because she was scared and he made her feel safe, partly because she loved him holding her close. “Are you okay?” Rachel asked, satisfied she hadn’t hurt herself any further. “Yeah.” She said, looking at the place where she’d slid. There was no sign of the fact that had been the cause of her fall, no sign that someone had come so close to being seriously injured. She grabbed onto the bar, holding it in her shaky grasp “I’m fine Jack.” She said, moving to grab it with her other hand. Jack looked stunned “I’m going to stay and help.” Jack said firmly “I’m helping you.” He said, standing by her side. Rachel looked at Martha “He doesn’t have to help you but I’d prefer to have him around. So we don’t have a repeat of before.” She said, looking at Martha in such a way she decided not to argue. “Fine.” She said, completely ignoring him as she focused her attention on Rachel. ---------------------- “Jack could you take her into deeper water and pull her through the water. Martha I need you to kick your feet as much as you can.” Rachel instructed. “Can’t you pull me through?” Martha asked, not wanting Jack to do it. “I’m a bit too short for the deep waters.” She said. Truth was that she wasn’t, but she wanted Martha to let Jack help her. If Martha didn’t let Jack help her, then there may be a repeat of before. Rachel knew she just wasn’t strong enough to support Martha and carry her properly. Martha sighed, and reluctantly took Jack’s hands, noticing he held them pretty tight, tightly and securely. He was obviously taking advantage of being able to hold her for as long as possible. -------------------- “Do you need a lift home?” Jack asked Martha after the session. “I can get my own way home.” She said, ignoring the question. “Come on Mac, I can give you a lift. We’re both going to the same place.” He pointed out. “Fine.” She said, heading towards the comfortable blue sedan. She opened the door, then realised Jack intended on placing her in the car “I can do it.” She snapped. She grabbed the piece they’d had installed so she could get herself in, and gritted her teeth. Again, her strength failed her and her hands slipped, causing her to fall on the cushiony seat, her useless legs dangling outside the car. She felt Jack’s arms immediately grab her slim frame, placing her properly in the seat “Thanks.” She mumbled, breathless and bright red. “No problem.” He said, putting her wheelchair in the boot with ease. She noticed the disabled sticker on the front, he still had it. And he’d used a disabled park. She knew he’d hoped to give her a lift home. He looked sideways at her as he got in “We need to talk.” He said seriously, backing the car out carefully. “Oh great.” She muttered. He ignored her and drove for about five minutes then pulled over. “Keep going.” She snapped. “We need to talk.” He said, stopping the car “I need for you to hear my side. You’re the only person who got a say two nights ago. It’s my turn.” “I don’t care if you’re in a wheelchair for the rest of your life. I don’t care if you never want to have another child. I don’t care if I don’t get a promotion and I don’t care about not getting the glory for the promotions. I don’t care what my family says. I belong with you and you belong with me. We can do this, please. I don’t care if we have to start the whole romance again. If we start from the beginning. As long as you can stand being in the same room as me and you’ll talk to me. That’s all I care about. Please.” He said, looking at her. She looked back at him, both her heart and her head telling him to go with him “Are you sure?” She asked, her voice cracking. “I’m positive. I’ve never wanted anything more than I want this in my whole life. You and the kids are my world. I couldn’t survive without any of you.” He said, taking her hand. “We start from the beginning. As friends, till I know you’re serious about it.” Martha said, dead serious. “Fine.” Jack said “As long as I help you with your physio because I was terrified when I saw you fall.” He said softly “Alright.” She said as Jack started the car.
