Chapter Eighteen

“Hey Pete.” Jack said cheerfully as he stopped at the door into Peter’s office the next day.

“You seem cheerful.” Peter observed “You were walking around as glum as anything yesterday.” Pete pointed out.

“That was because Martha said we should split up. But at least she can stand to be in the same room as me, and she’s said we can start our relationship again, but we have to start as friends, mainly because she wants to know if I’m serious about being her husband.” He said, looking at Peter.

“She obviously means a lot to you.” He said, sorting through some files.

“She does.” He said, smiling to himself.

“If you need time off work for anything, if anything happens with Martha, and her injury, just let me know and the time is yours, alright?” He said, looking at Jack.

“Thanks Pete.” He said gratefully.

--------------------------------

“What’s going on?” A confused Jack asked Peter when he came back after his lunch break.

“About time you got in. The bushfires in the Bay have raged out of control. The homes in your line have been told to prepare for evacuation so you’d better get your backside over to your house. Martha’s probably terrified about the fires. She can’t go anywhere without you.” He said, pointing to the door “Go!” He ordered.

-----------------------

“Martha!” Jack shouted, hurrying through the door.

“Jack!” Martha yelled out to him, coming from the door to the kids room.

Jack hurried, inside he found Martha grabbing the kids stuff and stuffing it into a bag, noticing she sat on the floor.

“I didn’t fall it’s easier to do it this way. Most of the stuff is packed, get our stuff!” She yelled after him as he raced to their room.

Half an hour later, Jack slammed the boot and rushed inside “Alright what’s going on?” He asked.

“Pretty much they’ll sound an alarm if we’re to evacuate. They told us to make sure we’re packed so we can leave straight away.” She said, worried.

Two hours later, an alarm did sound but it was the relief alarm.

“Oh thank god.” Martha said, sighing with relief.

“What?” Jack asked.

“That’s the relief alarm. Meaning we’re safe. But to stay packed in case it flares.” She said, looking at him.

“Alright. We will.”

------------------------------

“That threat scared me to death.” Martha admitted.

“It scared me as well.” Jack said, rubbing his head.

“There’s a meeting at the surf club. Fire fighters and the cops wanna talk to us.” Martha said, her wheelchair placed neatly beside the couch that her and Jack sat on.

“Well I’ve been called in early. Can you come with Ruby?” He asked her.

“Sure.” She said, nodding at him “I can handle it Jack.” She said, looking slightly annoyed.

“Alright.” He said, putting his hands in the air.

“Thanks.” She said, reaching for her chair, and glaring at Jack when he got up to help her.

“Put on the br-” He said, sighing when the chair went flying backward as he grabbed Martha.

She frowned, looking extremely annoyed with herself “The brakes.” She said finally.

“Yes, you forgot.” He said gently.

“Shut up.” She snapped.

“It’s alright you know. You’re allowed to make mistakes.” He said, holding her hand as he pulled her back onto the lounge.

“I hate it Jack. I hate that guy for what he did.” She said, staring hard at the ground “Which is why I still believe you’d be better off without me.” She said, not looking at him.

“I think you’re wrong.” He said, gently taking her chin and turning it toward him.

“I don't understand why you're so eager to stick with me.” She said finally, looking at him.

“Because your amazing.” He said simply “You take everything in your stride, your fiercely protective. And loyal. You’d do anything for anyone. You’re just one of the most amazing women I’ve ever met. And I don’t want to let you go, I refuse to actually.” He stated, looking at her grinning.

“Thank you.” She said quietly.

“For what?” He asked her.

“For believing in me when I didn’t. For bringing me around when I thought I was useless.”

“No worries.” He said, taking her hand.

---------------------------------

“I hate the three to four times weekly physio sessions.” Martha confided in him.

“I know you do but it’s fine.” Jack assured her.

Suddenly Rachel looked thrilled to see her “I have some relatively bad news. You’ve got to stay in hospital for around four days, maybe longer, while we figure out a bit more about how you’re progressing.” She explained to her.

“Great.” Martha said, frowning.

“It’ll be fine.” Jack assured her, nodding to Rachel.

Aww, great chapter. I like how Peter was all concerned and was willing to let Jack take time off. What a sweetie.

That last bit between Jack and Martha was soooo good. I feel like crying but smiling at the same time. Awesome stuff. I can't wait to read more! :)
