Chapter Nineteen.

“I hate hospitals.” Martha said, looking Jack straight in the eye.

“You’re going to have to get used to them.” He told her, looking at her relatively calmly.

“Don’t rub it in.” She warned him.

“I’m not, aren’t I allowed to say the truth? Except maybe over the next few hundred visits to the hospital you might even start walking again.” He said to her.

“Maybe I will but I don’t think that’s going to happen Jack.” She said, leaning back in her usual hospital bed.

“Well it doesn’t really matter if you never walk again. I mean, you will probably end up in a wheelchair again when you’re old.” Jack said, smirking at her.

“Gee thanks! You’ll be in one before me, you’re five years older than me.” She said.

“That might actually be true.” He admitted “But I might be one of those old men dancing around everywhere, dancing on tables and generally acting like they’ve just had a fix.”

“Or you might be one that goes to bed before sundown.” She smirked at him.

“That might also happen. But I doubt it. I have my strength and I also have my pride. My pride that you are not going to jump on till it bursts.” He said, faking a serious tone.

“Aww I’m sorry.” She said, grinning at him.

“A little birdie told us you were in hospital again so we figured we had to visit.” Tony said, heading in with now four month old Harley, and four year old Ruby early the next morning.

“Thanks.” She said gratefully, taking the flowers “I hate it in here, but at least the staff know me pretty well.” She said, looking at the flowers “They are gorgeous, thank you.” She said, putting them on a stand beside her.

“Well we all know how bad the hospitals can be, so we figured we’d better help you out a bit.” Tony said, smiling at her “Any news on the tests?” He asked her.

“None, I doubt I’ve improved much.” She said, looking up as the door was opened and Jack entered “I thought I told you to go home. You’ve been here all night.” She pointed out.

“I did go home. I had a shower, and freshened up a bit. Now I’m fine to do another all nighter.” He said, looking straight at her.

“Fine, if you must stay.” She said, looking at Tony “Take him home with you, please?” She almost begged them.

“When Jack makes up his mind it’s quite hard to make him see otherwise. I thought you would’ve noticed that by now.” Tony grinned at her.

“I have, I just thought that he’d have listened to me.” Martha said, shrugging.

“I do listen to you. About reasonable things.” Jack answered her, smiling as he sat beside her.

“So how are you two going?” Tony asked, adjusting himself on the hard plastic seat.

“You mean our marriage?” Martha grinned, then her grin faded “Not exactly the best, but it’s getting there. We’re trying the friends routine.”

“I thought it was best friends?” Jack frowned at her.

“Well for you, it can be best friends.” She said, smiling at him then turning her attention to Tony.

Tony smiled at them “Hopefully it’ll be husband and wife soon.” He suggested.

“We’re still living at the pad.” Martha assured her “It’s my house, and I make Jack pay rent.” Martha grinned at Tony.

“My rent is chores.” Jack explained.

“Yeah, he gets the dirty chores. Like cleaning the bathrooms!” Martha said, smiling.

“Bathrooms are hell to clean.” Tony laughed “Beth does the bathrooms now.” He added.

“I think it’s your turn.” Beth said, opening and closing the door as she made her entrance.

“Well, I, uh, well.” Tony said, desperate to get out of the duties.

“It’s his turn.” Martha giggled, looking at Beth.

“So how’s Martha?” Lucas asked Jack as Jack entered the Hunter/Holden household.

Jane looked up from cutting the salad, an unpleasant expression crossing her aged face. She couldn’t hide her loathing of that girl, and she knew that she had to get her out of Jack’s life. She knew she had to introduce Jack to one of her friends daughters, hopefully she’d be an able bodied person.

Jack noticed Jane’s expression, gritting his teeth and ignoring her “She’s great, she’s sick of hospital but that’s what happens I guess. I’m just here to collect some dinner for us and then heading back. Luc, you alright to mind Harley? It’s just he’s settled, and..”

“It’s alright.” Lucas assured his brother “Me and Harley will be fine.” He said, already dishing out three generous servings of the dinner.

“That’s plenty Lucas.” Jane cut him off, as he went to dish out more.

“Well there is three people Aunty Jane.” Luc said slowly, understanding forming on his face. He knew what Jane was doing and he didn’t like it.

“One is a four year old child, another is a hospitalised invalid who has been eating hospital food. I’m sure she’ll be fine with hospital food.” Jane said, looking sternly at Lucas.

“Don’t speak to Martha like that.” Lucas hissed at her “She’s my sister-in-law and she’s an amazing girl, something you’d see. She’s battled with death, and raising a child young and alone, and she’s dealt with more than you ever have. So shut your mouth and stay the hell away from her, and don’t treat her like dirt.” He snapped.

“Don’t speak to me like that!” She said shrilly.

“You deserve it!” He exclaimed, dealing more food into the container, including decent pieces of chicken for them all “And they deserve this food.” He said firmly, closing the container and handing it to Jack, who was glaring at Jane with utmost fury “Jack, I’m sure Martha would prefer it warm.” Lucas said, indicating towards the doorway.

------------------------------

“Jane had another go at you.” Jack confirmed later in the room as they ate.

“Really I never would have guessed.” Martha said sarcastically.

“Don’t worry, Luc sorted her out.” Jack assured her “He gave her one heck of a lecture that’s for sure. He told her to shut her mouth and stay the hell away from you.” He grinned “I never knew Luc could be so aggressive.” He shrugged.

“I didn’t either.” She said, smiling. At least Lucas didn’t mind her. In fact, the only person who minded her was Jane, and probably Joseph would dislike her as well.
