Chapter Twenty Two.

“How are you dealing with all this?” Kate asked Jack quietly, later that night as Beth prepared dinner for them all. Tony was nowhere to be seen, and Beth had furiously told him she couldn’t believe what he was doing, so she’d gone over to the Holden/Hyde home.

“As well as can be expected.” He said sadly “I didn’t want this to mean I lose dad, but I guess I do now.” He said, sighing.

“Well if it’s any consolation, me and Chloe are fine with Martha, and if Chloe wasn’t I’d give her an earful.” She said honestly.

“Thank you, and I’m sure Martha appreciates that as well.” Jack said, he and Luc truly believed that Kate was there for the good of things, not for the bad.

“Where is Martha, may I ask?” She asked him.

“She’s in with Ruby, Ruby’s got some stuff to do like clean her room, something Martha doesn’t let her get out of.” He grinned.

Martha wheeled herself into the main room, heading into the kitchen.

“Martha, wait please.” Kate said quietly “Can we, talk?” She asked her.

“Sure.” She said softly, heading over to Kate as Jack went to help Beth in the kitchen.

“Listen, I’m sorry that I gave you guys such a hard time. The truth is I was hurting and I was downright desperate to have my sons back.” She said, sighing.

“It’s alright, I understand. I imagine what it’d be like if Jack took Ruby and Harley.” She said, watching as Jack put a salad on the table, before heading back in and coming back with the vegetables.

“I’m sorry about your injury as well.” She said kindly.

“Thank you.” Martha said, smiling at Kate “Your sister, Chloe, she’s been here, but she hasn’t been around too much.”

“She’s the polite type. She accepted Tony invitation even though she didn’t want to. Me? I didn’t get one.” She grinned.

“Really? What a bit surprise. We got one, but didn’t attend.”

“It’s Jane’s fault.” She nodded “I knew even though I wasn’t involved. She always has trouble accepting new people into the family. Even after I had Jack, she wasn’t fine, and even more so after Lucas.” She shrugged “Her loss really. I was never accepted by his family so I strayed.”

“I never knew that.” Jack said softly.

“That you’re father failed to support his wife of seventeen years? Believe it kiddo, he didn’t support me after all that time. Whenever the families got together, he’d always support her and the others and I’d be left out. Erica was the only one who would talk to me. She still does.”

“She’s been talking to you all this time and we’ve never known?” Jack said, surprised.

“Of course she didn’t want her brothers and sister to know! She didn’t want her nephews to know either!”

“Really?” Lucas asked, curious.

“Of course she didn’t. She figured if you all knew that she was in contact with me then you’d never speak to her again, and she loved you too much to let that happen. And I feel she wanted to protect you from the severity of your aunt and uncle.” She said simply.

“Dinner’s ready.” Beth said quietly, knowing that Harley was asleep.

“Thanks Beth.” Martha said gratefully “It looks great.” She said, wheeling her chair into its spot.

“I hope it tastes good.” Beth said kindly “Kate, I’d just like to apologise for what I said that other day.” She said, looking at Kate.

“It’s alright, honestly. You were just reacting on your feelings.” She said, smiling at her.

“Alright, so what’s going to happen with Dad?” Jack needed to know.

“That decisions rests solely on your and Luc’s shoulders.” Martha said gently “If you don’t want contact that’s fine, we won’t hold any grudges.” She assured them.

“Let’s go back.” Jack said, glancing ahead where Tony stood, with Jane, Erica and Joseph.

“Alright.” Martha agreed, grinning as Jack manoeuvred her chair around a dip in the road.

Kate watched Tony through eyes shadowed by her sunglasses, then turned and followed her sons.

“I don’t believe it.” Tony muttered, hurrying up to them.

“Stay the hell away!” Luc warned, glaring at him.

“Luc, come on, why the hell are you trusting her?” He said furiously, but to his surprise Erica walked over to them.

“Tony Holden you are definitely the biggest fool out.” She said, turning around as they all headed back, except Tony, Joseph and Jane.

Chapter Twenty Three

-Note- I'm making Harley's age 11 months. I didn't know how old he should be, can't be bothered counting the dates And yes, it's extremely short. Because I got distracted 

Martha sat on the lounge, smiling at her young son. He was growing up and becoming so beautiful, and she loved him so much. She turned as she heard someone enter, and smiled at her husband "Hello Jack." She said softly, nodding to him.

He rubbed his eyes, grinning at her "Guess what?" He asked, sitting beside her and putting Harley in his pram.

"What?" She asked, her face freezing for a moment.

"Last night, while you were asleep I felt something. And I realised that you'd kicked me." He said, grinning.

"What?" She exclaimed, joy filling her face.

"You kicked me." He grinned even harder, if possible.

"Oh my god." She whispered, moving a hand to her leg, leaning into Jack.

"Exactly. So I was thinking. Get mum over to mind the kids while we take you to get another check, to see if there's anything we can do." He said, taking her hands and kissing the top of her head gently.

"Alright." She said, still in a daze.

"There is definitely some improvement there." Rachel said smiling, equally as happy.

"That's good, right?" She asked, thrilled.

"You haven't been here for two months, you've been too busy." Rachel said "So maybe it's time that we had another go at some rehab." She suggested to her.

"Sure." She said, beaming.

"I cannot believe I may be going to crutches soon." She beamed.

"The scan showed the swelling had gone down, which is really good." He said, making her lunch.

"I know." She said grinning "I can't wait to try walking again." She said, sighing as she knew it could be ages."

"We could try now." Jack said, abandoning their lunch and making his way over to her, holding his arms out for support.

Martha looked at Jack's arms, still hesitant even after what she'd said. She was dying to start walking again but it was a bit nerve wracking. She hadn't walked in ages.

"Trust me." He said softly, smiling as she put a shaky arm around his shoulders.

Martha took a deep breath in, and tried lifting herself, feeling Jack help her stand. She took a deep breath, and leaned on Jack heavily.
