Chapter Five

Jack smiled as he carried Ruby around on his shoulders. Martha had been called out, so she’d asked him to look after Ruby. He had no problem with that, she was practically his daughter anyway now. Jack and Martha had agreed to send in forms, placing Jack as Ruby’s father. Martha had been slightly sad but she’d known that it was what was best for Ruby, Jack and herself. He frowned as he noticed Martha up ahead, appearing to be in a heated argument over something. She looked stressed and unhappy and Jack wanted to know what was going on. He could tell she was being threatened, she looked somewhat scared. In the end he noticed her flatly refuse whatever he wanted and walk off, she didn’t seem to see Jack nearing her. He wondered what was going on.

Three days later, Jack still hadn’t found out what was going on. Martha had insisted that everything was fine, that the guy had been arguing with her about something unimportant, and that he didn’t need to worry but he felt that he did. He sighed, he’d taken a walk to try and think about it. He spotted the guy who’d agued with Martha, hanging around near Noah’s. Jack knew that Martha was busy working, and that she was inside. He was obviously waiting for her “What are you doing around Martha?” He asked, walking up to him angrily.

“Who the hell are you?” He demanded to know.

“It doesn’t matter, why are you harassing her?” He asked him, stopping beside him.

“Josh was my mate, and I’m just getting what belongs to me.” He told him firmly.

“What belongs to you?” He asked, curious.

“She owes me money. I lent it to her after the funeral, she hit rock bottom.”

“How much does she owe you?” He demanded.

“I lent her $800.” He said smoothly. He wanted his money back off his mates girl, and he wanted it badly.

“Fine. Give me a minute and I’ll give it to you, alright?” He told him, heading off. Soon he came back “Here’s your money. Leave her alone.” He ordered him.

“Fine by me, she’s a cow anyway.” He said, smirking.

“Get lost.” Jack spat, knowing he’d hit the guy in a minute if he didn’t leave.

“I’m going.” He said with a laugh, heading off.

Martha sighed as she headed out, knowing that Don would be there, waiting and demanding she hand him the money. She had about $50 to give him, what she could off her wages. She was surprised when she couldn’t see him.

“Looking for someone?” Jack asked her.

Martha turned around, surprised to see Jack “No.” She said, trying to smile.

“I know you owed someone money, Martha.” He said softly.

She felt her smile slide off her face “What?” She said, now worried.

“I know you owed that idiot who threatened you $800.” He told her calmly.

“How do you know.” She demanded.

“I asked him why he hassled you the other day and he told me.”

She groaned inwardly, now unable to face Jack “Great, now he’s telling everyone about my troubles.” She said, looking furious.

“Was he the only person you owed?” He asked gently, taking her hand.

“Yes.” She said with a sigh.

“Good, he’s not your worry anymore.” He reassured her.

“What?” She asked, wondering if she’d misheard.

“I said he’s not your worry anymore.” He said slowly.

“Yes he is, I owe him Jack.” She told him.

“I paid him.” He said simply.

“Jack!” She exclaimed.

“You’re my fiancé so it’s my place.” He told her stubbornly.

“Yes you are but they are my debts. I was the one who accepted his damn money!” She said furiously.

“Yes, you did take the money but you needed it! You needed it for yourself and your daughter. I understand and I don’t mind, and they are our debts.” He said, emphasising that it was both of their debts.

“Thank you.” She said, wrapping her arms around his neck “I love you.” She said, giving him a kiss.

“You’re welcome, and I love you too.” He said softly, wrapping his arms around her waist.

“Hey Martha.” Tony greeted her as he saw her enter Noah’s the next day, obviously in there for work.

“Hey Tony.” She said, smiling at Tony “How are you?” She asked him, putting on her red and white Noah half-jacket.

“I’m great, how are you?” He asked her.

“I’m alright.” She said, smiling at him.

“How’s the bub? And Ruby?” He asked.

“The bub is fine, so is Ruby. Jack’s coming in with her soon, he took her shopping today, apparently for my birthday coming up so I don’t know.” She said, smiling “It won’t be anything big. It’s in a month, and I’ll be six months pregnant then, so nothing flash.” She told him “Normally 21st’s are huge but mine will probably just be family and friends over for a barbeque or something, I refuse to party in my state.” She said with a laugh.

“My son, out buying a present a month before he has to hand it over? Alright, what’ve you done with Jack.” Tony teased both her and his son “Jack never did anything till the day before it was due. It seems that you’ve changed him.” He said, smirking at her.

“I have, I definitely have.” She said.

“That’s good.” He told her, he was kind and caring and he liked Martha, he saw her as a sweet young girl.

“How’s Luc and Belle? How’s married life treating them?” She said, referring to the fact that the two had recently married.

“They’re very good. It seems to be a trend in Summer Bay to get married young, Ric and Tilly did the same.” He said, thinking about the fact that his stepdaughter was now happily married, as was his son “So, any news on you’re and Jack’s wedding?” He asked, dying to know.

“It’d be about eight months after the baby’s born, and that’s nearly a year away so we won’t be wedded for about a year.” She told him.

“At least you’re not rushing it.” He told her.

“You worried about Luc and Belle getting married so young? Don’t worry, they’ll handle it. Look at Robbie and Tash, they already have a little baby and their very happy. And they have good role models around them, people here stick out their marriages, they don’t throw in the towel.” She assured him.

“I can tell you and Jack are in for the long haul.” He told her “You won’t give up on your marriage and that’s a good thing.” He told her.

“Finally I found you.” Came a woman’s voice from the door.

“Kate.” Tony said, stunned “What are you doing here?” He demanded, furious at his ex-wife for turning up.

“I thought you’d great me nicer, Tony. I was your wife.” She said, smiling sweetly at him.

“Was in the appropriate word.” Tony snapped at her “You left ten years ago for a younger man, you expect me to welcome you back with open arms?” He said, amazed she thought that.

“I realised it was a mistake.” She said smoothly.

“I don’t think it was a mistake. It was meant to happen.” He told her nastily.

“Well where are my sons?” She demanded, wanting to know.

“You’re sons don’t want to know you.” He snapped.

Kate looked at Martha, wondering why she was with Tony “Who are you?” She said, almost rudely.

“She’s Jack’s fiancé, not that it matters to you.” He said, wanting her to stay away from Martha.

“She’s going to be my daughter-in-law, Tony, I have a right to know her.” She said calmly.

“Kate.” Two stunned voices. Kate had left when Jack was 15 and Luc was 8.

“Jack, Lucas!” She called, hurrying to them but Jack pushed her back.

“Don’t come near me.” He said coldly, Ruby in his arms and he walked over to Martha.

“That’s the same for me.” Lucas told her, wrapping an arm around Belle and leading her over to the couch.

Belle and Martha sat beside each other, both unsure of what was happening but knowing it wasn’t good.

“Tony they are my family!” Kate said, furious that her ex-husband was forbidding her to get to know her own sons.

“Kate you gave us up when you left for him.” Lucas said, glaring at her with a look unlike his normal pleasant look that his blue eyes contained. It was filled with fury.

Belle put her arm on Luc’s, not saying a word but letting him know she was there for support. She already disliked the woman who was apparently her mother-in-law, and she wished she’d leave but for once, Belle was lost for words.

“Fine but I’ll be back. I’m not letting you go, Jack or Lucas. You took them from me Tony and turned them against me, made up lies about me. I’m not forgetting that!” She warned him.
