Chapter Nine:

Two months Later:

“You seem very happy.” Jack commented to Corey.

“I am. I proposed to Kara a few nights ago, she accepted, and then we found out she’s three weeks pregnant.” Corey grinned.

“Congrats. You must be thrilled.”

“Thanks. I am thrilled, but I think Kara is even more thrilled, if that’s possible.” He said with a grin “How’s Martha going? She should be nearly ready to have the baby.”

“Baby’s due at any moment.” He said, a grin spreading across his face he couldn’t control.

“Well congrats go to you as well.” He said with a laugh.

Suddenly Jack’s phone rang “We spoke too soon. She’s in labour.” He said, explaining it to Peter as he rushed out the door.

----------------------

“How is she?” A worried Jack asked. He’d been forced out, due to bad complications during the birth.

“You have a very healthy baby boy.” Rachel confirmed, smiling at him.

“Oh thank god. But how’s Martha?” He asked, worried.

“She’s in recovery, she’ll be ready for visitors soon.” She assured him.

---------------------

“Jack she’s ready for visitors.” Rachel called “She’s not awake but she’s going to be okay.” She assured him.

Jack hurried into the room, smiling as he saw his fiancé, lying on the bed. She had an oxygen mask covering her face. He turned as Rachel entered “So what happened?” He asked.

“He was a breach birth, and we were trying hard to make sure he survived. Nothing too bad to worry about.” She assured him, heading out.

“Hey Martha.” Jack whispered, taking her unmoving hand “We’ve got a little boy.” He said, smiling even though there were a few tears in his eyes.

“Someone’s here to see you.” Rachel called softly, heading into the room.

Jack turned around, in time to see a little bassinette being pushed into the room. He smiled, still through his red eyes, and cautiously picked up the tiny baby boy, smiling at the tiny baby who slept peacefully in his father’s arms. He heard Martha groaning and watched as her hand moved to her stomach “Martha it’s Jack. You’re in hospital.” He assured her, holding tight onto her hand with one hand, and onto his son with the other.

She forced her eyes open, looking at Jack. She noticed her stomach was a quarter of the size it had been, and also that Jack was holding a little baby “Is that..”

“Yeah, we’ve got a little boy.” He said, smiling at her.

-------------------

“What’s are we going to name him?” Jack asked, after handing the baby to Martha.

“I always liked the name Harley. Harley Jack?” She suggested.

“I like it.” He said, grinning as he leant over to give her a kiss.

------------------

“Congratulations!” Tony said, grinning at Martha as he entered the room.

“Hey Tony.” Martha greeted him.

“So this is my grandson?” Tony asked, smiling at the boy in Martha’s arms, as Jack was sitting with Martha leaning on him, with his arms wrapped around them both.

“Yup. Harley.” She said, smiling.

“Hello Harley.” He said, smiling as he tickled his stomach, before Martha passed him to Tony.

-----------------

“Jack I’m heading to work!” Martha called, nearly a month later.

“Alright!” He called back, appearing with Ruby by his side.

“Rub, be nice to daddy and your brother alright?” She asked, bending down to her height.

Ruby nodded, grinning as her dad picked her up.

“Cya!” Martha called heading out.

---------------------

“Mac I can give you a lift.” Ric called later that night, as Martha was due to finish.

“Sure. Thanks.” Martha smiled gratefully at her cousin, heading towards the car.

“So how’s life?” She asked inside the car.

“Very normal.” Ric said with a shrug.

“Mattie and you still going strong?” She asked with a grin.

“Yeah it’s pretty good. Can’t complain.” He said with a grin.

“Neither can I.” She said. Suddenly the force of their car moving quickly to the left surprised her. Ric had seen a car come fast towards them from behind, and the car had smashed them from behind, sending them straight into an electricity pole.

-------------------

“Where is she!” Jack demanded as he rushed in. Leah was minding Harley, and Ruby was with Jack.

“She’s still in theatre.”

“What the hell happened?” He asked, panicking to the max.

“A guy hit Ric’s car from behind. He’d offered her a lift home. They smashed into an electricity pole.” Sally answered, pale.

“How’s Ric?” Jack asked, worried for his cousin-in-law and his fiancé.

“He’s a lot better than Martha is. He’s in recovery. Just had a head injury.”

“Rachel what’s going on?” Jack shot out, as Rachel came around the corner.

“Jack this isn’t good news. Martha has excessive damage to her spinal cord. There’s a strong possibility she may never walk again. She may be wheelchair bound for the rest of her life. She’ll have some movement in her legs but it won’t be the best available movement. She won’t be able to stand unaided. She’ll only be able to stand if she’s leaning strongly on someone who can properly support her, like you, Tony or Luc. We also don’t know if she’ll make it past the next 24 hours, then the next 48. I’m sorry Jack. We did the best we could.” She said, giving him a sympathetic look as she headed back to check on Martha.

-------------------

“Jack.” Peter’s voice came through the hospital, as Peter sat beside Jack.

“Yeah?” He asked, his voice broken.

“How are they?” He asked.

“They’ll live if that’s what you mean.”

“We’ve found the guy who did it, but he died as his car lost control again a little further along the road.”

“That doesn’t help Martha.” He said, holding tightly onto Ruby.

“I know it doesn’t mate. But you’re being given as much time as you need off. You can have months, maybe even a year or so. We know this is going to be a struggle, and you’ll be on paid leave.” Peter assured him “I’m seeing to it.” He promised.

“Thanks mate. It means a lot.” He said, looking at him.

“Don’t worry about it. Is she awake?” he asked.

“No, she’s still in recovery and unconscious.” He said, kissing Ruby’s forehead.

“She’ll come through. She’s a fighter Jack.” Peter assured him, before going to stand with Dan, knowing Jack wanted to be alone.

“Jack!” Came Tony’s voice, aloud and alert.

Jack threw his head up, in the direction of the voice. Martha’s bed was coming through from surgery. He raced to it, ignoring the people who told him to stay back. He looked at her face, the brace around her neck, the machines connected to her, he just couldn’t believe it. It was a time they should be celebrating, not near grieving.

Chapter Ten:

“How are the kids handling it?” Tony asked Jack the next day, handing Jack a coffee.

“Sally’s minding Ruby, and Leah’s minding Harley. They both offered and I was grateful. I’d like to stay here at least until Martha’s awake. I don’t want her waking up and I’m not here.” He said softly, taking a sip of the coffee. He’d been told by Rachel to leave while they checked Martha, who had made it through the night, to everyone’s relief.

“Ric feels really bad about this as well.” Tony said, staring into his coffee.

“Yeah. It’s not his fault though, so what right do I have to blame him? He was driving safely, it was the moron behind him who did this to her, not Ric. Ric would have wanted her home safely.”

“What’s going on?” Cassie shot out as she ran in, she’d driven back in her little Barina “I heard about Martha and Ric I just don’t know what’s going on.” She said, fretting.

“They’re both alive. Ric’s in better condition than Martha is.” Tony said, knowing Jack didn’t want to say the words.

“Will they be okay?” She asked, pacing towards them.

“Ric will. We’re not sure about Martha. She may never walk again, and they don’t know if she’ll even make it through she’s that badly hurt. Her passenger side hit a tree.” Tony said, comforting a tearful Cassie.

“Jack, you can see her now.” Rachel said, coming out of the room.

“Any change?” He asked desperately.

“Sorry Jack. Nothing’s changed.” She said with a sigh.

------------------------

“We’re really hoping she’ll wake up soon.” Rachel said a few days later “She’s been out for a while, and hopefully her body and brain have recovered enough to allow her into consciousness.” She said, giving them a forced smile.

Jack groaned, leaning back into his chair. This wasn’t how it was meant to be. Martha was meant to be at home with him and their children, not in hospital fighting for her life.

“Daddy!” A little voice called, followed by the running of feet.

“Hey sweetheart.” Jack said, kissing her forehead as he picked her up and held her tightly in his arms. She and Harley were the strong reminders of Martha and he didn’t want to let them go anytime soon.

“Where’s mummy?” She asked timidly.

“Mummy’s not here right now.” He said, looking into the fiery blue eyes that reminded him so strongly of her mother. That made him cling to her all the harder, a move that made Ruby return the favour.

“I want mummy.” She said, her lower lip quivering.

“I want her too sweetie.” Jack said softly, leaning back in the chair and resting her in his lap, not letting her go. Not for a second. He’d been forced to let Martha go. There was no way in hell he’d let their kids go. Not now, not ever.

---------------------------

Later that afternoon, loud voices came from Martha’s room. Jack had to be physically removed from the doorway, in the end the person who moved him was Ruby. The little girl started crying and begging her dad to stay with her. She was the only person who could move him.

“Jack.” Rachel said, coming out ten minutes later. She was smiling.

“Is she alright?” He asked, panicking.

“She’s awake now. She wants to see you. She’s pretty weak, so I’ll mind Ruby.” She said, taking the little girl from him.

----------------------------

“Hey.” He said softly.

She smiled wanly at him “Hey.” She said softly, reaching her hand out for his.

He hurried to her bedside, and held her hands in his “I thought I’d lost you. I couldn’t cope with losing you Martha.” He said, remembering the fear from hours before.

“I don’t plan on going anywhere.” She said, gripping her hands tightly

“Have they told you about your condition?” He asked, treading gently.

“No, I don’t know anything.” She said honestly.

“Mac, in the accident you damaged your spine. It’s not good. You may never walk again.” He broke the news as gently as he could but even that had her in tears.

“Everything was going so well, now I might never be able to chase our kids again.” She whispered, as Jack engulfed her in a hug.

“I know but I’ll be there.” He promised her “I’ll help you however I can.” He said determinedly.

“Thanks. I guess that means your sticking around?” She asked, looking him straight in the eye.

“Of course it does.” He said, kissing her forehead and smiling at her.

-------------------

“Jack this is just totally ghastly.” Martha said, looking in horror at the hospital food.

“You’re lucky I’m a wonderful and caring fiancé.” He smirked, sneaking out a diner chicken burger.

“Thank god.” She muttered, grabbing for the burger.

“What’s the magic word?” He teased her with what she said to Ruby.

“Give me that damn burger.” She snapped.

“Keep your shirt on.” He muttered, handing over the meal.

“You even got me the chips. How sweet.” She grinned at him.

He grinned, before bringing out his own one, plus a little thing of nuggets and chips “Ready to see Ruby?” He asked, setting up a little dining table with the tiny hospital table.

“Yeah. Dying to, actually.” She said, gazing anxiously at the door as Jack left.

“Mummy!” She squealed, rushing in.

“Hey beautiful.” She said, grabbing to pick her up and struggling immensely until Jack lifted her into her lap “Mummy’s missed you sweetheart.” She said, wrapping her arms around her in a bear hug.

“Is mummy sick?” She asked sadly.

“Mummy’s a bit sick but she’ll be alright.” She promised her.

“Alright.” She agreed, before they all began dinner.

-----------------------

“Now Martha. Physio time.” Rachel said, smiling as she entered “I know a bit about physio so I can help you.” She assured her.

“Okay.” She said, relieved. Jack was there, something she was thrilled with.

“We’re just going to try some simple leg movements. You have some feeling in your leg, we know that but you can’t put any weight on them without proper support, which is why it’s great that Jack’s here.” She said, giving Jack an encouraging smile “Jack will be beside you at all times, so if you feel overwhelmed then tell us, or just grab him as hard as you want. I’m sure he won’t mind.” She smirked at him.

“Gee thanks. I’ll blame you if my arms are full of bruises.” He muttered, standing obediently beside Martha.

“You know you like it.” Martha laughed, like she had in the police station before all their dramas, during their engagement.

“I’m still to find that out.” He glared at her.

“Alright children enough squabbling. I can’t put you in separate corners so behave.” Rachel said, rolling her eyes.

“You and Kim are worse.” Martha confirmed.

“I’ll take that as a compliment now let’s start. We’re just going to move your leg a bit, to stretch it. If it hurts, tell me alright?”

She did that, and several exercises after that.

“Now we’re going to try a few steps. The sooner you’re on your feet the better the chance of recovery, and your back is fine except for the damage.” She assured her “Normally I’d get a walking frame that you put your arms in, but you might prefer Jack to that walking frame.” She said, looking at her for confirmation.

“I trust Jack more, no offence to the walking frame. Plus Jack knows if I fall I’ll kill him.” She said with a shrug, as she grabbed Jacks arms that he held steadily for her. She smiled as he put his arm over her shoulder, added support “Don’t fall.” She said wryly.

“I’ll catch you.” He grinned.

“Seriously, don’t.” She warned him.

Chapter Eleven

“What?” Jack asked, confused.

“We’ve had an offer to fix your house to allow your wife full access to every area of the home. The anonymous person has asked that the best quality items be used, and that it is very secure. Apparently Martha is his family and he’s just providing for his family. We accepted the offer, so your house will look different. The house has also been bought, and has been offered to you free of charge.” The real estate agent said simply.

“Who is doing this for us?” Jack asked, surprised.

“As I said, he is claiming to be family.” He said with a shrug.

“What’s his name.” He asked again.

“Brett Macklin, I don’t know how much you know about-”

“That’s her father.” Jack said, surprised.

“Yes, well, the improvements were done over the past few days, as you were notified about. Now it’s all completed and the house is officially yours.”

-------------------------------

“What?” Martha asked, startled.

“You’re dad payed for the improvements to the house, and gave us the house for nothing.” He said, grinning profusely. They finally had their own house.

“I can’t believe it.” She said, stunned.

“Neither can I but I’m not going to knock it.” Martha said happily.

“Hey Martha.” Rachel greeted her, walking in.

“Hey Rach.” Martha said, smiling at her.

“The house’s improvements are looking good aren’t they?” She asked, smiling.

“About that. Rach, my dad paid for those improvements. He also bought us the house and gave it to us.” Martha said grinning.

“Wow, do you want us to move?” Rachel asked unsurely.

“Nope, just continue helping with bills and it’ll be fine.” Martha assured her.

“Thanks.” She said gratefully “I don’t want to find another suitable house just yet.” She said, sighing.

“Besides, Liam can have the spare room beside Harley’s. He’s best friends with Ruby, there’s only a few months difference in their ages.” Martha reminded her.

“Maybe the same will happen with Harley.” Rachel said mysteriously.

“What? Are you pregnant?” Martha said, grinning.

“Yeah. We’ve been keeping it quiet in case anything went wrong, but I’m nearly ready to start showing so it should be fine.” She said, grinning.

“At least you can have another baby. I doubt I could.” Martha said with a sigh “In my condition.”

“But you can have another baby Martha.” Rachel pointed out “You could try it naturally, but if that didn’t work you could try IVF. And I’m sure someone could be surrogate for you.” She said.

“Oh my god I never thought about that.” Martha said with a grin, facing Jack who looked equally as happy.

“I’m guessing that was a sad point?”

“We wanted around four kids. So it’d be safe to have another child?” Jack wanted to know.

“Yes, but as long as the pregnancy was closely monitored. People have had children when they’ve been in wheelchairs before. It’s not uncommon. You may have to have a caesarean birth, but if you’re fine with that you should go well.” She encouraged the young couple, before heading out.

“We can have another child.” Martha said, beaming “Not now, but we can.” She said softly.

-------------------------

“Home sweet home.” Martha said two days later, wheeling herself into the home.

“Yup.” Jack said, smiling as he handed her Harley.

“It’s changed pretty nicely. I love it.” She said, grinning. The ramp, wide enough for her wheelchair, with little rails on the side for safety, was positioned over a little river. And the rest of the house seemed beachy and bushy, a nice combination. She turned her head at a knock on the door “Brett.” She said softly.

“Martha. I heard about your accident.” He said nervously, standing in the doorway.

She nodded simply, waiting for him to continue.

“I’m sorry about everything, I just didn’t realise what I was throwing away. I’m really sorry.” He repeated.

“Part of the reason I’m forgiving you is because you went to such an effort with this house. I heard you paid the man who was rebuilding it, you gave the owner money to have such a beautiful house.” She said, looking at him calmly.

“Yeah I did.”

“So you did all that without me knowing. Thank you.” She said quietly.

“You’re very welcome. You’re my daughter, and it’s my duty to care for you even though I haven’t before.”

“Hi.” Jack said, heading into the room with Ruby in tow.

“Is this your little girl?” He asked, smiling at her.

“That’s Ruby.” She nodded “Ruby this is grandad.” She said softly.

Brett smiled. He knew he’d made the right decision. He just had to make sure he didn’t mess it up. Again.

---------------------------

“How are you Martha?” Tony asked as the happy couple came into the Hunter home, followed by Ruby, with Harley in Jack’s arms.

“I’m alright.” She said, parking the chair with relative ease.

“You’re getting used to that then?” Luc asked, watching as Ruby sat in Martha’s lap.

“Yeah, it’s not the best but it’s alright.” She grinned.
