Chapter Three

A month later, Martha plastered a fake smile over her face, listening to Colleen droning on and on about Lancie when he was little. She would rather be sitting with her children at the hospital, with her Aunty and cousin but Colleen wanted her to stay and chat about kids. She knew that her kids wanted to go visit Aunty Morag, but she was stuck here chatting to Colleen. She smiled a sign of relief when Colleen got called away, and made a quick exit, rushing Lin and Jay to the car as quickly as she could. She started the ute, driving it out carefully. She listened to Lin and Jay both play with their blocks, on either side of the car. She continued driving along, sighing to herself when she frowned at the traffic approaching her. Some idiot had no control of his vehicle, and was swerving everywhere. She started beeping her horn, hoping that he’d stop fooling around to avoid hitting her. She realized that he had no control of the vehicle, and she knew that for a fact when she felt him slam her into a tree. Surprisingly fortunate it was, that they hadn’t been a far distance from the tree, but he’d still made her car go skidding sideways. She sat, looking stunned as she looked at her car, wedged between trees and another vehicle. She turned to see her kids, expecting the screaming, but the only one screaming was Linden, Jaysen was quiet. Deadly quiet. She looked at her son, his arm was trapped between the car and his kid seat. She reached out to him, hoping he’d wake up, she didn’t even know if he was alive or not. She felt pain shoot through her legs and she realized she was trapped, and she knew that she had to call for help. She felt for her mobile, grabbing it and dialing Jack’s number “Jack, I’ve been in an accident. We’re not far along Kangaroo Rd.” She told him, wincing as she tried to move again.

----------------------------------------

“She said she was along here.” Jack said, extremely stressed. Sure enough, they were soon approaching the scene. He could see Martha’s ute, steam coming out of the bonnet. He jumped out and raced over to it, wrenching open the passenger door, looking at his wife’s tearstained face. But what she said next hurt him even more.

“Jack check Jaysen.” She said, really upset “His arm’s trapped, and I can’t get to either of them. I’m trapped.” She whispered, scared.

He nodded to her, getting into the backseat and reaching across the child seat, looking at Jay’s arm “It’s definitely caught.” He called back to Martha, giving a reassuring smile to Linden “He’s alive.” He said, feeling for the toddler’s pulse.

Martha felt relief flood through her “How’s Lin?” She asked, turning around as much as she could without sending pain flowing through her aching body.

“She’s alright, a bit stunned that’s all.” He said, turning to the little girl and telling her she’d be fine “How are you?” He asked Martha.

“I’ll live.” She said, wincing.

Jack saw the wince, so he turned around and checked her over “You’re legs, they’re trapped aren’t they?” He asked her.

She nodded, starting to get scared “Jack, please help us.” She whispered.

“Of course I’m going to help you. Dad’s waiting for the emergency crew and helping the other driver, I love you Martha and I made a huge mistake. I’m getting you and the kids out of this.” He told her firmly.

Martha felt touched by his words, she still wanted to make him suffer but she didn’t know if she could “Thanks but you’re still in the dog house.” She told him frankly.

“I know, and I’m going to do everything I can to change your mind.” He assured her “You and our children are the most important things in the world to me. Tasha was the biggest mistake of my life.” He told her, touching her shoulder, relieved she didn’t push him off.

“The ambulance is here.” Tony said, walking over “How’s everyone, I was helping Tasha. She’s the other driver.” Tony told them.

“Damn her!” Jack said, furious.

“I know this may not exactly be appropriate timing, but I’m gathering these are my grandkids?” Tony asked Martha.

“Yeah, Jaysen and Linden.” She admitted.

“Okay.” He said, moving to the side as the ambulance pushed him and Jack out of the way.

---------------------------------

“He’s my son I’m not leaving him.” A furious Jack told Rachel.

“Alright, Jack, you can stay.” Rachel assured him.

Jack looked at her, almost thankful. He held his two year old son’s better hand, his other had been confirmed broken, but not a bad break “It’s alright, Jaysen, daddy’s here.” He said softly “Daddy’s not going anywhere.” He assured the two year old.

“Mr. Holden?” Came the voice of Nurse Julie.

“Yes?” He said, turning.

“You’re daughter is fine.” She assured him, handing Linden to her father.

“Thanks.” He said softly, holding his daughter tightly. He noticed that she seemed to already accept him, and for that he was grateful.

“Dada, where mama?” Lin asked her father.

“She’ll be here soon.” He promised her, knowing Martha had been sent off for some tests. Martha had eventually been pulled from the destroyed vehicle, she’d been floating in and out of consciousness due to her pain.

“Jack, we’ve set Jaysen’s arm, he should be fine.” Rachel assured him “We’ll give you the stuff to give him for the pain.” She said quietly.

“Thanks Rachel.” Jack said gratefully.

Julie came in the door again “Jack, Martha’s asking to see them.” She said, indicating to the two children.

“Of course.” He said softly, putting Lin on the ground, holding her hand and picking up a drowsy Jay. He headed into the room.

Martha sighed with relief when she saw Jack enter, a child in each arm, holding Jay and leading Lin “Thank god.” She whispered, reaching out for Jay. She held her son tightly, clinging to him “I’m going to be in here for a few days.” She told him with a sigh.

“I can mind them, Dad’s offered to help me.” He told her.

“Thanks, you are they’re father after all.” Martha readily agreed, noticing how he picked up Lin and played with her “You’re doing a great job so far.” She assured him.

“Thanks.” He said softly “I thought you’d never want to see me again.” He added, sitting on the bed, holding Linden securely.

“For a while, I didn’t. Throughout the pregnancy I was alone, almost scared in a way. I was worried I’d do something wrong when I did have them, but I was certain that I wasn’t going back to Summer Bay. You’d gone with Tash, seeming to forget me so I wasn’t going to let you know your kids. It was foolish and harsh and I should’ve known that both of them, Jay especially, benefited from knowing you. I can see it already, you’ve only known them for a month and already Jay is different, no longer whining at every little thing, but almost a man sort of thing. Linden’s come out of her shell, and it made me realize that they did need you around, to love and care for them. I just wanted to hurt you I guess.” She said softly.

“I understand that. I’m so sorry, I’d take it all back if I could.” He assured her.

“I know, thanks.” She said “Maybe soon we’ll get together, I want to and I know you do as well. The kids would be better off with us being together but that isn’t the only reason I want to get together. I love you, no matter what I can’t deny that.” She said softly “So let’s see how it goes.” She told him, determination in her eyes.

“Let’s see how it goes.” He agreed.
