xsianx Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 What Is Muscular Dystrophy? Muscular dystrophy (say: mus-kyoo-lur dis-troh-fee) is a disease in which the muscles of the body get weaker and weaker and slowly stop working. Muscles and membranes need many different kinds of proteins to stay healthy. When you hear the word "protein" you might think of food because food, such as meat and peanut butter, contains protein. But we're talking about another kind of protein - the kind your body actually creates. Your genes tell your body how to make the proteins your muscles need. But in people with MD, these genes have wrong information or leave out important information, so the body can't make these proteins properly. Without these proteins, the muscles break down and weaken over time. As this happens to muscles, people with MD begin to have problems with the way their bodies work. http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/health_probl..._dystrophy.html

-ParaisGal- Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 Chapter Five Martha stared out into the ocean. It was two hours since she’d been told her daughter had cerebral palsy, and she still couldn’t get it into her head. She ran her fingers through her hands, the feeling of the smooth, silky grains comforted her somewhat. She felt the tears run down her tearstained cheeks, she couldn’t believe it. One bad fall could have caused her daughter so much misery. She’d be confined to crutches, or maybe even a wheelchair. She shook her head, unable the think of the things that may have come of one fall, one strong knock to the head. When she was younger, she’d been trying her first few steps and she’d tripped, at a fast rate, her head hitting a piece of sharp, strong metal, and now that fall had resulted in her having cerebral palsy. She’d brought Lin and Jay with her, and she watched as they played, Lin’s slight difficulty now so obvious to her mother. She closed her eyes, but only for a second, she could never take her eyes away from her children, especially around water, in case something happened. She didn’t know how she’d get past the fact that she could have caused her daughter to get cerebral palsy. -------------------------------------------- “She has what?” Tony asked, confused. “Lin has cerebral palsy.” Jack confirmed. “Jeez, mate, that’s terrible.” Tony sympathised with Jack. “How’s Martha handling it?” Beth asked, interrupting the pair. “Not too well I don’t think. She’s blaming herself for it.” “How could she have stopped it, mate?” Tony asked. “Apparently when Lin was about 16 months old, she had a big fall, she hit her head on a piece of sharp, hard metal. Martha was in the room but she was too late to get to her, because Jayden had just had a fall himself, they were both starting to walk.” Jack explained. “That’s not her fault mate, she should know that.” Tony said. “Well, seeing as she’s coming to dinner in about an hour, maybe we better get dinner ready?” Beth suggested. “Good idea.” Lucas said, his comments long gone after the news of his niece. -------------------------------- “She was meant to be here half an hour ago!” Jack exclaimed, starting to get worried. “Don’t worry mate, she’ll turn up.” Lucas assured his brother. “What if Lin’s having trouble? What if Martha’s having trouble?” He exclaimed, pushing his fingers through his hair in frustration “She was having trouble dealing with it at the hospital, I should’ve been there for her!” He said, now worried. Belle had gone to look for her. “Belle will find her and bring her back.” Luc promised him “Trust me.” He said. Jack sighed, trying not to let the tears fall down his face. “She’ll be alright mate.” Tony said, placing his hand on Jack’s shoulder “She’ll come home.” ---------------------------------------- “Martha!” Belle yelled out to the figure, crouched down in the sand. She hurried as fast as she could to the figure. Martha heard her name being called. She knew it was dark and she knew she should probably get home. Alf had come and gone, taking her children with her, and understanding that Martha was having trouble coping with the news. Still, she chose to ignore the voice that was coming closer towards her. “Martha.” Belle said softly, sitting beside her in the sand “Please, come to Tony’s.” She pleaded, taking her hand and trying to get her to come, but with no success. “No.” She said firmly. “Where’s Lin and Jay?” She asked, changing the subject. She knew that Lin and Jay hadn’t been to Tony’s. She was distracted by her phone ringing, and she got up and went a little bit away to answer it “Jack, I’ve found her. Oh, so Alf dropped them off to you? No, don’t come down, I’ll get her back.” She promised, hurrying back to Martha “Come on, Lin and Jay are at Tony’s and they need you. They need their mother.” She said, trying to pull her to her feet again. “A mother who causes her child to get cerebral palsy you mean?” She snapped, as Belle sat down. “A mother who shouldn’t blame herself for something she can’t change. It’s not your fault that you can’t be in two places at once. Jaysen had just tripped, you were helping him! This is not your fault and nobody blames you!” She stressed the final part. “They should.” She said softly. “Nobody does, and nobody should. Jack’s worried sick about you, he doesn’t blame you. I don’t blame you. Nobody does.” She said quietly “Please, come back.” She said, standing up. “Nobody will want me there.” She said firmly. “I do, Jack does, so does Luc, Tony, Tilly, Ric, Beth! Most importantly you’re kids do. Lin doesn’t care, Lin doesn’t understand. She wouldn’t want you to blame yourself.” She whispered. Martha looked into Belle’s eyes, knowing inwardly that she was speaking the truth, but her stubborn side was fighting it. “Please.” She said, looking down on her. “Alright.” She said softly, getting up. ------------------------------- “Martha!” Jack exclaimed happily. “Jack.” She stated softly, coming in. “Come in, Martha, we’re just about to eat.” Beth invited her. “Thanks.” She said, almost shyly. She knew she was meant to be there forty five minutes ago “Sorry I’m late.” She apologised. “No worries love, we know you needed time.” Tony assured her. Martha smiled at them, noticing Jack had sat himself next to her, and had briefly touched his hand to hers. Normally Jack doing something like that would have made her angry, but this time it reassured her. It reassured her that Jack harboured no harsh feelings towards her and didn’t feel badly. She smiled at him, then hesitantly reached across and took his hand. Jack felt Martha take his hand, he felt surprised but relieved. He squeezed her hand, looking at her encouragingly. “Thanks.” She whispered to him gently. “You’re welcome.” He said. ------------------------------------------- Martha smiled as the night went on, and then looked at the time “Sorry, I’d better get Lin and Jay home.” She apologised, picking up Lin. It was now automatic to pick up Lin. She waved goodbye, and headed outside, and soon found Jack following her “Hey.” She said, smiling at him. “Hello.” He said, nodding “Linden’s injury isn’t your fault.” He said softly. “How do you know I was blaming myself?” She demanded. “Because I could see it in your eyes when you explained it to Rachel.” He said softly. “Well, it is my fault-” “No it’s not, how could you have prevented it? By cloning yourself?” He asked “How could you, you were with one child you couldn’t be with both.” He said, frowning. “I should never have gotten that TV stand.” She said angrily. “It’s not your fault.” He assured her. “Yeah, sure.” She muttered. She picked up both her moody kids “This is going to be fun, getting them to bed.” She muttered. “Why?” He asked, curious. “They are way overtired, and won’t settle. I’ll be up for hours with them both, it happens like this.” She said frustrated. “I could help.” He offered. ”Believe me, you don’t want to.” She said flatly. “I do. They are my children and the responsibility shouldn’t solely be on you to get them to bed.” He said firmly, picking up Lin. “Alright.” She agreed. -------------------------------------------- “You are a miracle worker.” Martha whispered an hour later. Both the children were asleep fifteen minutes ago. “I know.” He said, smiling as he wanted his sleeping children “Maybe I should head home.” He said, reluctant to leave. Martha, too, felt the impulse to let him stay “Jack, what are we going to do?” She asked, leading him into the main room as she closed the kids door gently. “I don’t know.” He said honestly. “We could get back together if you wanted. I want.” She said. “I want too.” He said. “Great.” She said, wrapping her arms around him, feeling him give her a light kiss. “Well?” He asked. “Good.” She agreed “Come on, let’s go to bed.” She told him, taking him into her room “Let’s have some fun.” She said, smiling almost mischievously at him.
