-ParaisGal- Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Chapter Six “Come on.” Martha said softly to Lin, picking her up out of the crib “Time for breakfast.” She said, carrying her towards the kitchen, where she placed her in her highchair beside her brother. She calmly fed the two children, still getting used to the news she’d heard last night. Her daughter, a cripple? She couldn’t get used to that. But she knew it wouldn’t change. Rachel had told her that there were facilities for mums in her position, particularly single mums. She headed to the sink, to get two cups of juice. She put the cups on the chairs, thinking hard and long about this. “Greetings stranger.” Rachel said, smiling at her as she stood at the door. “Hey Rach.” Martha said warmly, inviting her in. “How are you?” She asked, heading over to the highchairs and smiling at the little twins. “I’m alright.” She said cautiously. “Alf’s expected to wake up soon.” Rachel said softly “I thought you’d appreciate some good news.” She added. “Thanks, it does come in handy. I’m relieved about grandad though. Aunty Morag’s coming around soon, so hopefully she’ll be able to help me with these two while I visit him. I haven’t been able to see him lately, there’s too much going on.” She said, stressed. “Hey it’s alright. Look, here’s an idea. Go and see your grandad, leave the kids with me. I can handle them, so go and catch up with him.” She urged, pointing towards the door. “Thanks.” She said gratefully, heading out the door. ------------------------------------- “Hey grandad.” She said softly, heading into his room. She could never get used to his unmoving self, it just wasn’t like her grandad. The grandad she remembered was always moving, helping someone, doing something. This grandad just lay here, on this plain hospital bed “I bet your wondering why it took me so long to come.” She continued, sitting beside the bed “I know I wonder that question. I wonder why it took me so long to come to the bay at all. I don’t know how I stayed away so long, I just felt I had to. I felt I had no choice, that I needed to remain hidden from the horrible truths that awaited me at the end of the journey. With Jack. And managing with life. I’ve got two kids now, twins. They are why I left the bay, to deal with the hurt of what Jack put me through. But they are the ones that got me through this. I’m grateful they did, I just wish I’d come sooner you know grandad? They need to know their great-grandad too, so please wake up soon, they need to know you. Please grandad.” She said softly. “Hello Martha.” Morag said, quietly heading in “Do you want some more private time?” She asked her niece. “No, it’s alright.” She assured her “When’s he going to wake up? I can’t take any more bad news, Aunty Morag. I need him, he needs to meet the twins.” She said, sniffing. “How about you and I take a walk.” She said, leading her out of the pessimistic hospital room. ------------------------------------------ “I can’t handle this. All the waiting, not knowing. I’ve got enough to worry about, without worrying about grandad. I mean, I can’t stand this. I can’t believe he might not make it through.” She said softly, at the hospital cafe ten minutes later. “Is Jack supporting you with Lin?” She asked gently. “Yeah. He’s assured me he will, and I’ve told him if he doesn’t come through with this then he’s had his chance, he’s made his last bad mistake.” She said firmly “I’m not letting him off the hook if he does this wrong. He’s paying for it, he’s going to seriously regret it. I won’t be walked over.” She said firmly. “Spoken like a true Stewart.” Morag said with a smile “Does Ruth know about your kids?” She asked. “No, she doesn’t. I don’t talk to her much.” She mumbled “I just stopped in contact after a while, and it never came back.” “She was really worried when you disappeared, and nobody could contact you. We all were.” She said, her worry showing in her voice. “I figured.” She admitted “I had so many missed calls, except they weren’t really missed calls. Ignored calls would have been a better name for them, and I regret missing them. Grandad might have gotten to know his great-grandchildren before it was too late.” She said, tears welling into her eyes. “It’s alright. He’s a Stewart, he’s a battler. He won’t give up so we have no reason to.” She said firmly. “Thanks.” She said gratefully. ------------------------------------------------ “Settle down or Uncle Ric will throw you in the water!” Ric threatened Jaysen. Jay didn’t look too worried, just proceeded to poke his tongue out at his ‘uncle’. “Uncle Ric is a nasty little bugger isn’t he?” Martha asked Linden. “Leave Uncle Ric alone or he’ll throw mummy in to.” Ric said with a shrug. “Not if daddy has anything to do with it.” Jack said, heading towards them. “Hey.” Martha said, giving him a smile. “This is not fair! Four against one!” Ric complained “Jack, please, join my side with Jay. That way it’s three against two. Better odds.” He suggested. “I think four against one is better odds.” Jack said with a shrug. “Come on mate, that’s just plain cruel. You can’t seriously sell me out!” He protested. “I can actually.” He said, grabbing Ric and running towards the water, dragging a surprised Ric. Martha giggled as she watched them, turning as yet another face came behind her. “He’ll never learn.” Mattie said, shaking her head with amusement “He thinks he’s all that when really, he isn’t. It’s funny to watch.” She said with a laugh. “I know.” She said, watching Ric dunk Jack “I think he’s winning.” She said, then as Jack slammed him through a wave and onto the sand, added “Maybe not.” -------------------------------------- “That wasn’t very nice.” Ric panted ten minutes later, engulfing Mattie in a bear hug. Mattie squealed, batting him away with her arms “Get off me!” She said, glaring at him. “You’re in your swimmers.” He pointed out. “That’s beside the point!” She argued. Jack grinned as he sat beside Martha, completely saturated. “Don’t even think about it!” Martha warned him seriously “I do not want to have to go home.” She said, glaring at him. “I haven’t done anything. “Not yet anyway.” She muttered. NEXT CHAPTER: More beach fun. But will tragedy strike? PLEASE RATE AND REVIEW!
