Chapter 13

Martha sat on the wooden floor of her bedroom tightly holding the photograph in her grasp. She had spent the last half an hour or so examining the picture just to make sure she wasn’t mistaken.

After running away from Noah’s, Martha came straight home. She needed to be certain of her suspicions- irrespective of whether they were right or not. When Martha arrived home, she was thankful everyone was asleep. It was pretty late but she didn’t want or need her family asking a million questions; probably because she didn’t have the answers.

Removing her knees away from under her chin, Martha made her way to the window. She gazed out into the night sky watching the stars twinkle in the navy blue blanket which held the shimmering form. Brushing away the beads of tears that were continuing to fall and fixating on a particular star that glistened brightly and out shone the rest, she spoke.

“Hey you” Martha whispered, “I bet you’re laughing at me right now aren’t you?” she smiled weakly. “I know you always hated seeing me cry and whenever I did, you’d always try and cheer me up; make me feel better and you know what, you always managed to put a smile back on my face. Even if I was blubbering like a baby, you’d always tell me things were going to be ok- even if that was as far away from the truth as possible” she sighed, smothering another tear with the back of her hand. “I wish you were here with me right now Adam, telling me everything is going to be ok; holding me, comforting me the only way you knew how” said Martha.

Placing the photograph of Sarah and Adam that she had hold of on the desk, Martha took a few step towards a framed photograph that was beside her bed. Sitting on the edge of her mattress, she brought the frame so it was inches away from her face and kissed it lightly. Through her sparkling vision, Martha looked at the photograph with a look of content. ‘The good old days, the days when we were happy’ she thought inwardly.

Martha fell back on her bed and shut her eyes. She held onto the framed photograph, hugging it closely to her chest. She remembered when the picture was taken and how happy Adam was that day. It was the day he had proposed and Martha had agreed to be his wife. Martha had no idea Adam was going to propose. In fact, Adam had first spoken to Alan, Martha’s dad, to almost seek his permission before asking Martha to marry him. But, that was just how Adam was; sweet, considerate and caring.

The McKenzie’s celebrated to the early hours of the morning after the announcement; Adam, Martha, her dad and brothers; just how Martha wanted it.

Their bliss and joy was only temporary. Everything changed a couple of days later. What was supposed to be the happiest days of her life soon became a nightmare. Martha’s world was turned upside down; right in front of her very eyes.

(Flashback- almost 3 years ago)

“Ok, so when you say two minutes, you actually mean twenty” Adam grinned as he pulled up in the car park outside the bank. Martha had taken ages to get ready and they almost missed their appointment with the bank.

“Hey cheeky” Martha exclaimed, pretending to sound offended, “I shall ignore that comment. It’s a good job I’m in a good mood” she said, getting out of the car and shutting the door behind.

“Oh, and why is Miss McKenzie, soon to be Mrs Stevenson, in such a good mood?” asked Adam, as he made his way to where Martha was stood and pulled her in closer to him.

“For that very reason” she whispered, “Soon-to-be Mrs Stevenson, I like it” she smiled at him.

“Me too” smiled Adam as he kissed her gently on the lips. They were just about to deepen their kiss when they were interrupted by what sounded like giggling. Adam and Martha prised away from each other and looked to their side to find a small child watching them. The little boy had his hand to his mouth and was attempting to stifle his laughter.

“And what is it you’re laughing at mister?” Adam queried as he took a few steps towards the youngster and knelt down in front of him, “You trying to hit on my girlfriend?” joked Adam, as he wiggled his eyebrows.

“That’s icky” the little boy continued to chuckle, “Mummy and daddy do that all the time and it’s icky” he shrugged.

Martha watched on as Adam ruffled the small boy’s hair. She smiled, acknowledging how great Adam was with people. Not only was he able to interact easily with older people, but he could talk and laugh with children with complete ease. ‘It’s probably because he’s a big kid at heart’ Martha thought to herself.

“Sean sweetheart” said a third voice, “Are you troubling this nice man?” said the woman as she stood next to the little boy.

“Oh, not at all” beamed Adam, “He’s a great kid”.

“Thanks” said the slender woman, “He’ll just go up to and talk to anyone. I worry that this habit of his will get him into trouble one day” laughed the woman, “He gets it from his father” she said, taking Sean’s hand as he waved Adam goodbye, and leading him into the bank.

“Speaking of fathers” Adam remembered, turning round and walking up to Martha, “I promised Alan I’d have you home by 5pm and I don’t want to get into his bad books already” he smirked, taking Martha’s hand into his, “But how adorable was that little boy? I can’t wait until we have children; all six of them will be so cute together” he remarked, watching the worrying look slowly emerge on Martha’s face.

“Six?!” shouted Martha.

“Yep, three of each” Adam continued to joke, “How about after we finish in the bank, we take a little detour before we go home and get the ball rolling” he said playfully, kissing Martha on the cheek.

“Adam!” Martha nudged him slightly in the ribs before dragging him towards the main door of the bank.

(Half an hour later)

Martha and Adam had been sat in the waiting room, waiting to be called in. They were both slightly nervous and tentative and the fact that the bank were running behind schedule in terms of keeping up with appointments was not helping. The bank itself was not overly busy, in fact including Adam and Martha and Sean and his mum, there were only two other people waiting in queue to pay their bills and four members of staff. But, as an advisor had explained to Martha and Adam, the bank were experiencing some technical difficulties with their computers; hence the wait.

“So, do you think the bank will give us a mortgage? I mean, I know I only work in a pub but, the pay is good and income is consistent and regular and, with your job, they can’t really refuse us, can they?” asked Martha, wanting to hear something positive.

“Course they won’t refuse us” replied Adam, placing a hand on Martha’s knee, “And WHEN they sanction it” continued Adam, placing extra emphasis on the word ‘when’, “we can start looking for that dream house you’ve always talked about”.

Martha nodded, “You’re the best, you know that?”

“So I’ve been told” Adam sighed.

“You’re such a dork” Martha giggled, “But I still lo-” before Martha could finish, she was stopped in her tracks by a shriek. Adam and Martha both jolted by the unexpectedness of the shout. They looked over to where the sound of anguish came from, only to be horrified further…

*********************************************************************

(Ten minutes later)

The two persons, who were armed with guns, cowered around the group of people. Fours members of staff, Adam, Martha and Sean were sat on the floor all huddled together, fearing the worse.

Sean, who was sat on Adam’s lap, had not uttered a word since he saw his mum being struck on the head with a gun by one of the men. Her lifeless body was then dragged into a separate room by the partner; neither showing an ounce of remorse for what they had done. Sean had his arms around Adam’s neck. His vocal sobs had now subsided but he still continued to cry silently, looking at the closed door which his mother was behind; hoping for her to come out.

“This is getting crazy Greg” said one of the men, as he paced back and forth, “Things were not supposed to go this far. We just had to get the cash and then do a runner…and now someone is dead” he cried.

“Will you shut it Larry! I didn’t want to kill anyone either” roared Greg, “It’s just that kid” he said, pointing to Sean, “He kept talking and talking to me and wouldn’t shut up. I only wanted to show him the gun so he would get scared and shut his trap. I didn’t expect his mother to turn round that very moment and see the gun” he explained.

Silence then filled the room. Larry glanced over at the group that he was keeping hostage. He then looked at Martha and could see the fear that was plaguing her eyes. He watched as she firmly gripped onto Adam’s shoulder; not wanting to let go. Martha moved her vision so it was no longer looking at Larry. She couldn’t look at him, either of them; they made her feel sick to the stomach.

Realising the intensity of stares being directed at Martha, Adam spoke, “Look please, we don’t want any trouble. You said you wanted the money; why don’t you just take it and leave?” Adam began to negotiate, “The police haven’t been informed either so you’ll be able to get away”.

Greg and Larry looked at one another before, “We’d appreciate it if you kept your opinions to yourself pretty-boy” said Greg angrily, “Do you think we’re stupid? As soon as we take the money and leave, you’ll call the police, give them a description and then they’ll be searching for us; on our backs non-stop. Plus, there’s a small matter of a dead body in that room” stated Greg.

At the sound of ‘dead body’, Adam felt Sean squirm in his hands. “Hey mate, its ok” whispered Adam as he rubbed his back.

Martha was not starting to get really annoyed. Not only was she angry for being put in this situation, she also hated the way in which Greg seemed to be flaunting his work.

“Oi” Martha said, standing up, “That little boy has just seen his mum die in front of his eyes, he doesn’t need to be reminded about it every second, moron” she argued.

“Ohh, feisty” smirked Greg as he walked towards Martha, “When the kid was giving me lip, that was just plain annoying but you sweetheart; it’s cute” he said sleazily as she ran his finger down Martha’s bare arm.

“Get your hands off of her” Adam shouted, jumping up from his seating position, “Touch her again and you’ll be sorry” he threatened.

“Adam, just leave it” Martha said worriedly as she pulled him back, “He’s a scum, just ignore him”.

“Aww, yes pretty boy, do as your girlfriend tells you. Ah hell, who am I kidding, if my girlfriend was as hot as that, I’d do whatever the hell she wanted” Greg said, wanting to evoke a reaction out of Adam.

Adam could feel his temper rising and on the verge of flaring but he curtailed his emotions once he felt Martha tugging the back of his shirt, “Please don’t” she pleaded, “Just ignore him. They’re dangerous Adam, please just sit down” Martha finished as her voice wavered. Adam nodded and sat back down, pulling Martha down to sit next to him. He held her by the waist and brought her in closer. Martha rested her head on his shoulder as her tears began to fall, seeping through Adam’s shirt.

“Hey baby, don’t cry” Adam hushed, “Everything’s going to be fine, I’ll keep you safe. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you”.

“Look, if you all just keep quiet and let us think, no one will get hurt” Larry intervened. “Greg, we need to come up with a plan; and soon” he exclaimed.

Larry and Greg moved away from the hostages and walked up to a couple of chairs a few meters away. They were in deep conversation, trying to think of ways to get out of the mess when a faint noise caught Greg’s attention.

“Ssshh, do you hear that?” Greg asked Larry.

“What?” replied Larry.

“Listen. It sounds like sirens”. Greg’s face then dropped as the realisation hit him, “It’s the f***ing police!” he shrieked. He and Larry raced towards the main window. They peered out of the blinds, being careful not to show themselves. Within a few seconds, four police cars were outside the bank and police officers were taking their positions.

“How did the police find out?” whispered Martha, as she directed the question around the small huddle.

“It was me” said a bank advisor hesitantly, “When I saw him hit the lady with a gun, I was behind the counter. I managed to press the emergency button which is linked to the police station. But, because we were having some technical problems, I wasn’t sure if they’d have gotten the signal. That’s why I didn’t want to say anything” she finished explaining.

“The building is now completely surrounded by our officers” came an amplified voice from outside, “You have nowhere to go. Come out into sight with your hands in the air”.

“Damnit, what are we going to do Greg?” asked Larry anxiously.

Without a moments’ hesitation, Greg ran up to the hostages and grabbed hold of Sean. He dragged the young boy along the floor as a hysterical Sean tried to get away from Greg’s grasp.

“Get the hell off of him!” exclaimed Adam as he ran up and attempted to untangle the boy from Greg’s grip.

“Adam!!” cried Martha as she watched Greg kick him in the face repeatedly.

Greg carried Sean the rest of the way until he got to his destination. He slowly opened the door, only to be faced with what seemed like hundreds of uniformed officers. Putting Sean on the ground, Greg took out his gun and aimed it towards Sean, “If you want to see him alive, let me and my friend go!” he shouted. Greg then looked at the officer with the megaphone in his hand, “Tell all your officers to put their guns on the floor, or by God, I’ll shoot the kid!”

“Lower your weapons” said the detective.

“Good, now we’re getting somewhere” Greg smiled nervously, “Larry, come on”.

Larry walked up to where Greg was stood. He looked down to the floor and watched the young boy crying. Crouching down, he helped Sean up, “I want you to turn back round and go sit with that guy you was sitting with before, that Adam guy ok?” he said. Sean nodded and began to jog towards Adam.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing you idiot?” Greg said angrily as he swivelled around. In a split second, Greg aimed his gun at Sean. At the same time, the officers were ordered to get hold of their firearms and be ready.

Two shots were fired…two bodies slumped to the ground…

“ADAM!!!”

(End of Flashback)

*********************************************************************

Martha sat upright on her bed, gasping for air. She looked around to establish where she was. ‘You just dreamt it, you just remembered it again’ she thought to herself as she wiped down her forehead.

Martha hadn’t remembered the events of those days for a long time. Sure, she’d recall snippets of it but, this was the first time in months that she had experienced it all again.

It all felt so real; like she had just re-lived her worst nightmare again. The memories were still apparent; just as though it had happened yesterday. All the details were crystal clear and precise. Nothing was sketchy, nothing was forgotten. The pain and hurt and the reality of losing a loved one was as real, raw and painful as the day it had happened; the day the nightmare started and, up until this day, the nightmare has not stopped.
