I can't believe I am actually saying this but I wish he hadn't died too, I think Adam and Martha would have made a great couple.

Chapter 14

(The next day)

“Emma, breakfast is ready. Hurry up or you’re going to be late for school” Jack shouted from the bottom of the stairs.

“Coming daddy” replied Emma as she came bustling down at an express pace.

“Hey, hey careful” smiled Jack as he grabbed hold of her hand to stop her from falling, “I told you to hurry up; not to have an accident” he joked.

“That’s not funny” Emma said, glaring at him, “I’m rushing because it’s the dress rehearsal for our school play and I don’t want to be late. Oh and daddy remember, I’m going back to Leanne’s house tonight to practice, so her mum will pick me up from school” she scoffed, taking another mouthful of cereal.

“Ok that’s fine. I’ll ring Sarah later and confirm it with her. Now missy, if you don’t hurry up and finish you’re breakfast, not only will you be late for your dress rehersal, but I’ll be late for work” he said, taking the toast from Emma’s grasp and putting it in his mouth.

“Hey daddy, that was mine!” Emma protested, as she ran to keep up with Jack.

Martha sat alone in the Diner, staring at her cold cup of coffee. She had been sat there for a couple of hours now just thinking about the events of the last few days. She thought back to how things were going so great between her and Jack, but then how things had changed dramatically after the proceedings of the previous night.

Re-appearing from her trail of thoughts, Martha looked down at her watch; it was only 11am. She sighed outwardly and impatiently. Alf was coming back from the City today, mid-afternoon, but for Martha, the time couldn’t come sooner. Her granddad was the only person who knew about Adam; and he was the only person she could talk to right now.

Martha was well aware that her granddad was deliberately shortening his visit to the City. After having his foot examined, he was planning to catch up with some old friends, and stay on for a couple of weeks longer, but he didn’t want to leave Martha on her own; not tomorrow anyway.

It would be the anniversary of Adam’s death tomorrow, and Martha had planned for a remembrance service in honour of the man she loved. Not that anyone in the Bay knew him, but Martha wanted it to be a private occasion. She didn’t want the day to go by without it being marked and when Alf suggested a short service, Martha couldn’t refuse.

“Oh hi love” came a voice, which caused Martha to jerk, “Sorry love, I didn’t mean to scare you there”.

“Umm, oh hi Tony” Martha stuttered, feeling slightly embarrassed at her dramatic reaction, “I was a million miles away”.

“That’s ok” smiled Tony, “It must be something in the waters. A lot of people seem to be in a world of their own these days”.

“What do you mean?” Martha asked.

“Well, I come in here and find you off with the fairies and then there’s Jack. I worry about that boy sometimes” smirked Tony, “I got a call from him a while ago saying that he’d read his roster wrong, and that he wasn’t even supposed to be at work today. He’s hanging around the station for a while so he doesn’t look like a complete fool, but, I’m meeting him here for some food anytime now” he finished, looking at the clock behind the counter.

“Oh right” laughed Martha nervously. ‘Damn it, that’s all I need; to see Jack’ she thought. Martha contemplated getting up and walking away but quickly put that idea to bed. She had to act as though nothing had happened. The last thing she needed right now was to arouse suspicion as to why things were awkward between herself and Jack.

“So is that a yes then?” Tony asked again.

“Sorry?” a confused Martha replied.

“I asked if you wanted to join me and Jack.”

“Umm, thanks Tony but I’m actually waiting for someone” Martha lied.

“Ok love, but we’ll be sat over there if you want to come join us” he said, pointing at an empty table a few metres away.

Martha smiled in acknowledgement and watched as Tony sat down at his table. She picked up a menu that was wedged on a stand at her table and had a quick skim through. She wasn’t even hungry but needed to be doing something; especially if Jack came in.

“Can I have a strong latte?” asked a female voice. Looking up, Martha noticed it was Sarah. She shuffled uncomfortably in her seat, getting a strong urge to want to go and talk to her; to talk about Adam. Martha wasn’t even sure if Sarah knew about her. When Martha met Adam, they were not particularly close. Martha knew of Sarah, and Adam would talk about her occasionally but conversation was always at a minimum.

Plucking up the courage, Martha spoke, “Sarah” she said in a hushed tone, whilst deciding to remain seated.

“You” said Sarah, turning round to face Martha, “You’re the girl from the bar right?” she said uninterested.

“Yeah. Ummm, I need to talk to you. It’s about…it’s about Adam”.

This definitely caught Sarah’s attention. Sarah took a few steps closer to Martha, who gestured for Sarah to sit down; which she did. “What do you know about my brother?” Sarah queried.

Martha sighed, “He…He was my fiancé.

*********************************************************************

Martha and Sarah had spent the last half an hour talking and getting to know each other. Much of the conversation centred around Adam; Sarah spoke about their childhood whilst Martha described the last few months before he died. Even despite Jack’s arrival, neither woman broke away from their conversation.

“You’re more than welcome to come tomorrow” Martha said, explaining the remembrance service to Sarah, “It’ll start around about 1pm at the wharf”.

“Yes thank you. I’ll definitely be there. It’s a very lovely gesture Martha. I think Leanne would like to come as well. She may have only been very young when she last saw her uncle, and to be honest, I don’t think she remembers him at all, but I do talk about him all the time to her. I tell her things that we used to get up to, how we used to play fight and stuff. I’m sure she’d like the opportunity to remember him; even if she only remembers him through my words” Sarah said sadly. Martha nodded, “And, I want to apologies for coming across all moody and snooty. I hope I didn’t offend you?”

“Not at all, don’t worry about it” Martha smiled, “I’m just glad we’ve sorted it all out, and we can concentrate on tomorrow now”.

Martha and Sarah continued to talk, but stopped on Jack’s arrival to their booth, “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to disturb, but Sarah, I just wanted a word” said Jack politely. Jack glanced over to Martha; who was already looking the other way to avoid eye contact.

“Yeah sure Jack, what is it?” Sarah asked.

“Emma was saying that you were picking the girls up from school today. I just wanted to make sure”.

“Yeah that’s right. They wanted to get some extra practice in before the big day next week” Sarah laughed, “I’ll have her home for 8pm, is that ok?”

“Yes of course, that’s great” Jack smiled. He was just about to turn back around and return to his lunch when he suddenly shot out, “I didn’t realise you two were friends?” he said, directing his question to Martha, but only for it to be answered by Sarah.

“We have a mutual bond” she emphasised, looking Martha straight in the eye and giving her a comforting smile. Martha nodded in appreciation and acknowledgement.

“Right” said Jack, not wanting to press the matter further, “I Guess I’ll see you later tonight then” he finished, walking away from them both.

“Jack’s so nice, isn’t he?” sighed Sarah, “He’d make some lucky woman very happy”.

Martha coughed, “Umm yeah, I guess he would” she said rather tentatively.

“It’s just a shame about his job” Sarah said in an angrier tone.

“What do you mean?”

“He’s a policeman. I hate the police force. It’s because of them that-” but before Sarah could finish her sentence, she stopped in her tracks, “Gosh, listen to me, going off on one again” she laughed hesitantly. “Is that the time? I should really get going; I need to go and pick up the girls soon and I still have shopping to do” she said as she stood up. “Umm, Martha you’ve got my number so, give me a call if you ever need to chat, ok? And I’ll see you at the wharf tomorrow. Ok, ciao” and with that, Sarah hurryingly exited the Diner.

‘That was strange’ Martha thought to herself.

*********************************************************************

(Later that afternoon)

“Ok, I’m coming” Martha said, as she approached the door, “Jack” she exclaimed.

Jack had spent the entire afternoon with his dad talking about his mishap with Martha the night before. Tony could see the pain and hurt that was not only etched in Jack’s voice, but clearly visible on his face.

Tony hated to see his son in such turmoil and after much consultation; he had finally managed to convince his son to clear the air with Martha. Still unknown to Jack, Tony helped conspire to bring Martha to the Bay and he wasn’t going to sit back and watch his plan go down the drain.

“What are you doing here?” Martha asked; dreading hearing the answer she expected.

“We need to talk” conceded Jack as he walked in uninvited.

“Make yourself at home” Martha said sarcastically as she rolled her eyes.

“This is serious” Jack sternly said, “I just need you to hear me out. Look, I’m really sorry for what happened. That certainly wasn’t the way I wanted things to turn out, and I didn’t want to hurt your feelings; not ever” he solemnly said, looking down at his hands. “I honestly thought-” Jack was interrupted by the phone. “Hello…what?!”

Martha, who was not looking at Jack previously, glared up at him. She noticed the jaded and scared look as the colour continued to fade from his face. Walking up to him so that she was now facing him, Martha asked worriedly.

“Jack…Jack what is it?”

“It’s Emma…she’s in hospital”.
