Chapter Twenty Three.

Martha lay on her bed thinking. Just thinking. Nothing else really crossed her mind at that moment. No longer did she feel horrid, she just felt numb. She was a happy numb though, and Jack was just plain happy.

“I knew you’d be in here!” Jack said, grinning as he came into the room, checking on Ebony before laying on the bed next to her.

“Of course I’d be in here. Ebony’s in here, I can’t stand being away from her too long.” She said, smiling as she leant over and gave him a gentle kiss, before wrapping her arms around him.

“I’m glad you haven’t got the cancer.” Jack said, stroking her hair lovingly.

“So am I. I was so worried and upset that I’d miss seeing my girls grow up, that I’d miss seeing them get married and have their own children. I don’t want to miss out on that.” She said, smiling. The bliss had hit them, and friends and family of the couple had told them to go to Tony’s that night, for a party. It was originally going to be a surprise party, but word got to Colleen and Colleen had been talking about it loudly as they entered the diner, despite everyone’s best efforts to shut her up.

“Let’s go.” Jack said, helping her up.

“Alright.” She said softly, smiling at him.

“Come on sweetheart. Dance with me.” Martha said, taking Mackenzie’s hand and pulling her towards the crowd “Dance with mummy, please?” She said, grinning at her two year old daughter, watching as she followed her mum.

Mattie smiled, watching Martha with her second youngest. She was distracted when she felt a small hand on her own hand.

“Aunty Mattie, come dance!” Lillie begged her, trying to pull Mattie up with her added weight.

“Alright Lillie.” Mattie laughed, standing up and allowing herself to be pulled to the dance floor. She twirled the young girl around, smiling at her young face, alight with joy.

“Lillie’s enjoying herself.” Jack commented to Martha, the trio were dancing and watching Mattie with Lillie.

“It’s just proof that Matilda’s going to be a great mum.” Martha said warmly, smiling as she noticed Mattie look at her “She just seems so natural around any one of the girls, or even Noah, Hope and Ella, that I think everyone realises she’ll be an amazing parent.” She said, picking Mackenzie up.

“She’s going to be a good mum, that’s definite. But Beth still hasn’t accepted the fact that her daughter is going to be one of those teenage mothers, one of those statistics.” Jack said, looking at Beth staying away from her youngest child.

“Well, Mattie won’t really be one of those statistics. She’ll be twenty when the baby is born.” Martha shrugged.

“Lillie get up.” Martha whispered the next morning, shaking her daughter gently, choosing to ignore her groans “Come on sweetheart, you know you have to get up. You have school, remember?” She told her.

“Why doesn’t Kay have school?” She complained, pulling her blankets up higher on her shoulders.

Martha grabbed the blankets, pulling them off her eldest “Because Kay isn’t old enough yet.” She said firmly “If you don’t get up, then I will carry you to the shower.” She said, holding her waist to let Lillie know she was serious.

“Fine.” She mumbled, giving Martha a dirty look.

Martha watched her daughter leave, smiling even after what had happened. Lillie was just like her when she was her age, her adoptive mother had told her what she was like when she was little, so she knew she shouldn’t get angry, because her adoptive mother had supported her greatly, and hadn’t lost her temper with her.

“She awake?” Jack asked, poking his head in the door, his shirt untucked but other than that he looked set to leave for work.

“Bad mood and all.” She nodded to her husband “You okay to drop her in an hour?” She asked him, walking into the kitchen with him. It was seven am, and Jack started work at eight thirty, dropping Lillie off on his way in.

“I’m fine to drop her, I always am.” He smiled, giving her a kiss before turning his attention to the breakfast.

“Is Mackenzie awake?” Martha asked Jack.

“I don’t know, I thought you checked on her?” Jack asked.

“Well, her bed was empty.” Martha said slowly.

“I’ve been awake for a while, and I’ve not heard anything from the nursery.” He said, starting to get slightly worried.

“Oh no.” She whispered, hurrying around the house “She’s not anywhere!” She called, frustrated and no longer worried about keeping her voice low.

“Where would she be?” Jack called, racing around the house.

“I don’t know.” Martha said, racing into the nursery and checking Mackenzie’s bed, even though she knew her middle daughter wasn’t there “Where is she!” She said frustrated.

“I’ll go and get dad.” Jack said, running out the front door and racing to Tony’s house.

Minutes later, the Holden/Hunter clan came rushing in, finding a distraught Martha holding tightly to Lillie, with Ebony in her arms.

Beth came and took Ebony from Martha, noticing the look of pain in Martha’s eyes “We’ll find her.”

Martha felt Lillie’s hand tightly around her waist, so she pulled Lillie into her arms “You’re not going to school today sweetheart.” She told Lillie, shifting her to her right hip. Even though she was nearly six and could walk fine, she didn’t want to let her go.
