Chapter 4: Forget The Past, Focus On The Future

2 Months later Martha sat on the couch thinking she had been doing a lot of that lately she had been trying to come to decision and now she knew the answer she knew what she wanted now all she had to do was tell Jack how she hoped that his answer would be yes.

“I’m home” Jack called from the doorway as he walked through the door Martha turned her head around to face him and her smile grew when she saw that he was carrying a big bunch of flowers in his hands.

“A delivery for Mrs Martha Holden” Jack put on a funny voice as he handed her the flowers.

“Oh thankyou” she said as she placed a kiss on his lips just then she remembered what she had decided earlier she pulled away from him.

“We need to talk” she said

“Ok” Jack said not sure of where this was heading “what’s up” he asked,

“Nothing” she said “but I’ve come to a decision”

“Ok” he said slowly not quite knowing where this was heading

“Come over here” she said leading him over to the couch

“Ok” Jack said once they were sitting “what’s all this about?” he asked her with a smile.

“These last two months have been really rough on both of us I think we can agree on that?”

“Yeah they have” Jack agreed

“Well I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately”

“Ohhh that’s always dangerous” he said with a light chuckle

“Shut up I’m trying to be serious” she said giving him a playful hit on the arm

“Ok, Ok” Jack said composing himself “what have you been thinking about”

“I want to have a baby” she stated simply and to the point

“What” Jack asked not quite understanding?

“I want to have a baby” she repeated herself “with you” she finished looking at him shyly as if not knowing what the answer would be,

After a moment of silence Martha spoke again “please say something” she pleaded with him

“Um” was all he could seem to get out he wasn’t expecting this

“I see” she said getting upset as she stood up and headed for the door but was stopped when something grabbed her arm she spun around quickly to face him and to her surprise he was smiling

“I want to have a baby with you too” he spoke happily

“Really” Martha squeaked happily

“Really” he replied bringing her into his arms

“We’re really going to do this we’re actually going to have a baby together” she gleamed

“If that’s what you still want” he said

“Of course it is there is no one else I would rather have kids with that I’m sure of” she said surely,

“I feel exactly the same” he replied as he lent down and pressed her lips against his own “I love you so much” she murmured against his lips

“I love you too” he replied as he picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist

Jack slowly pulled away from her “have you talked to Rachel I mean can you...”

Martha knew what he meant and nodded “yep she said I’m as good as knew we can start trying whenever we like”

“No time like the present” he smirked at her

“My thoughts exactly” she smirked back at him

“So we’re actually going to do it” he asked her

“Apparently if you want us to have a baby” she said cheekily

“Shut up and kiss me” he ordered her as he started to carry her towards the bedroom.

Chapter 5: Trying to get ahead but keep falling behind

She sat on the cold bathroom floor staring blankly at the stick in front of her,

She was pregnant, this had been what she wanted but the moment she found out slight fear had rushed through her, “what if it happens again” she would ask herself suddenly all thoughts were put to a stand still as she heard the front door opened and slam shut again.

“I’m home” came a cheery voice from the living room.

Martha sighed and pulled herself up from the cold tiles and moved towards the door she turned the knob slowly, took a deep breath and made her way out to the living room,

“Hey” Jack spun around from the fridge with a bear in his hand after a long day at work,

“What’s up” he asked her but his face fell when he realised she had something on her mind “what’s wrong” he asked moving closer to her,

She sighed and brought her hand from behind her back “I’m pregnant” she shot out with a small anxious smile plastered across her face as she waited for the reaction,

It took a few moments for the news to sink in but as the realisation hit him he started to smile “you’re pregnant” he repeated her

“I’m pregnant” she replied happily as her smile grew

Jack quickly scooped her into his arms and pressed his lips against her softly

“We’re going to be parents” he said happily

“I know I can’t believe it” she said excitedly

“Me either oh my god” he exclaimed still overwhelmed with shock and happiness pulled the woman he love and the mother to be of his child back into his arms,

“I love you so much” he exclaimed looking straight into her eyes

“I Love you too” she said back leaning in for another kiss…..

“Oh my goodness a baby” Colleen said jumping up and down in the diner “oh how exiting” she kept rambling on “you deserve it after all that business what with you falling pregnant with that rat ashes baby and then going through the whole miscarriage and…” but Irene cut her off

“Colleen in the kitchen now” Irene exclaimed

“I was only saying” she tried to explain her self but Irene cut her off yet again

“NOW!!” Irene said slightly raising her voice

“Alright, Alright I’m going” she said walking into the back

Irene turned back to a slightly taken aback Martha “I’m sorry love she meant well”

“Oh no it’s fine that’s just Colleen” she said brushing it off

“Well I think a proper congratulations is in order” Sally said standing up, “Dinner at my place tonight”

“Oh no Sal you don’t have to do that” Martha exclaimed

“No I want to” Sally insisted 7.00o’clock be there she said walking out the door…

“We must be early” Jack exclaimed “Or late” he added

“No” Martha said checking her watch “seven on the dot” she exclaimed walking up to the door and turning the knob,

“It’s open” she stated slightly worried why would all the lights be off when there was meant to be a dinner party type thing going on right now and why would the door be open If there was no one home?

Martha pushed the door open and got the fright of her life when the lights turned on and everyone shouted,

“SURPRISE!!!!!” everyone yelled

“Oh my god” Martha exclaimed realising what her friends and family had organised for her and Jack “Thankyou so much” she finished starting to move through the crowd to thank everyone.

Later that night Martha was outside sitting at the table getting some air before heading back into the party,

“Hey” a voice broke Martha from her thoughts she quickly spun her head around to find Sally standing there,

“Hey” Martha replied with a smile “thanks for all this it’s great” she said gratefully

“Hey after what you’ve been through you needed a good party,

“Yeah it’s been a full on couple of months” Martha said looking down

“It must be hard” Sally said

“What?” Martha asked confused

“Being pregnant again so soon after…..” she trailed off

Martha sighed “we planned this” she said

“Oh” Sally exclaimed well I guess that would make it easier you were obviously ready” she said

“I thought I was” she said sadly “but I’m just so scared” she said tears starting to well up in her eyes “I’m so scared that it’ll happen again” she finished tears now flowing freely down her cheeks

“Oh come here” Sally said walking over and scooping her into her arms “It won’t happen again it was just one of those things”

Martha nodded as she pulled away from Sally and Sally grabbed a chair and sat down opposite her.

Martha looked down “I think about it” she suddenly spoke

Sally looked up at her words “what”

“I know I said I was relieved in the hospital and I was but you know some nights I’ll just lie awake thinking things like “what would of she looked like” what would of she done when she got older” “what kind of person would of she been” and then there’s the little things like “what would her mouth of been like and her eyes” Martha looked up at Sally “I know it sounds stupid” she exclaimed

“No” Sally said shaking her head “It doesn’t it sounds completely normal”

“I just want the pain to go away” she said “that’s why I decided to fall pregnant again I guess I thought it would make some of the pain go away but I think it’s just made it worse I can’t stop thinking about what I’d do if I lost this baby” she said looking up again

Sally looked at the girl in front of her, she looked into her eyes it was as if they were pleading with her for an answer of what to do, and it was as if she was asking her to take her pain away “what am I supposed to do?” she asked

“Talk to Jack” Sally sighed

Martha shook her head “I can’t” she exclaimed “he won’t understand we’re having a baby of ours no and I should forget about ash’s and just move on” Martha said standing up and wiping away her tears “And that’s what I’m going to do I’m going to have this baby and me and Jack will be happy from this moment on no more thoughts about Ash or the baby I’m looking forward my future is with Jack and this little one” Martha said adamantly.

Sally watched as Martha strode back through the door back to the party and wondered how long she could keep the façade up before she completely broke down she had to get her to open up to Jack but Martha was stubborn and she would have to act fast cause this was going to eat away at her until there was nothing left…..
