Totally understand about the workload, don't feel that this is another burden otherwise you will only end up hating writing it! And we don't want that now lol

Good luck with the exams and happy working through it, don't forget to mentally tick off all the finished tasks you do, believe me, it feels good when you can cross something off the list! :D

Thank you all for being great and waiting patiently. I've had this chapter on my computer for a while, and even though I'm not too keen, i thought it was time I post it. Thanks to Krystal for proofing! :D

Chapter 4

The three boys entered the smokey club, aliens to the situation.

“Um… should we sit down?” Alex asked.

“If you can find a place to sit.” Jack joked, gesturing to the clouded surroundings. “Maybe we should just ask one of the staff?”

“I will!” Davie said a little too eagerly from behind, darting off to a blonde one near the bar.

Jack and Alex looked at each other, their eyes wide.

“He’s going to enjoy this a little too much, isn’t he?” Jack laughed, watching as Davie talked to the woman. “Do you think we should leave him somewhere?”

Alex smiled, walking over to an empty table near the stage. “One step ahead of you.” He chuckled.

**********************************

“What can I get you?” She asked, peering down at Jack and Alex.

Alex stuttered, smiling up at the attractive woman. “T..Two beers please.”

The woman smiled politely and made her way back to the bar. Alex watched her every step of the way.

Jack laughed, shaking his head at him. “We came for you, didn’t we? I was just an excuse. You need a girl mate.” He teased.

Alex ignored Jack and looked over at the back of the club, behind the stage. There was a tall brunette; standing next to a wall as she took a 5 minute break.

“She’s nice.” He said to Jack, elbowing him in the ribs to get his attention.

Jack flinched, and then followed his gaze. He was right, she was nice. Really nice. He looked back to Alex, who was still staring.

“You really do need a girlfriend.” Jack said, shaking his head.

Alex shrugged, “Well, I’m in the right place for one. You never know, I might get lucky.” He winked to Jack.

“You’re not seriously interested in one of these girls, are you?”

“Why not? Who wouldn’t be? Look at her over there; she’s perfect! Maybe she’ll come over here…”

“She may look perfect; but she won’t be. She’s okay in these 4 walls; but outside, she’ll be a wreck.” Jack said wisely.

Alex shook his head, “You speak bull. She’s fit.” Alex continued to watch as she strutted up the club, in the direction of the bar. Soon she was out of site. “Awww, and she’s gone.”

Jack looked at him in amazement. “Again. GET A GIRL!”

*****************************************

After two hours, Davie had found a slightly merry Jack and Alex. They had sat around, talking about typical men things in between the occasional interruptions by the female staff for drinks. Jack had first been against the idea of this, thinking it was a bit desperate and pathetic, but he’d soaked the atmosphere in by now and was enjoying himself. Maybe it was the alcohol consumption, or maybe his idea of the club had genuinely changed – either way, he was wondering why he’d never been before.

“Oh, there’s the brunette!” Jack cheered, elbowing Davie in the ribs.

Davie grinned, “You’re right. She is nice.”

“They’re all nice! But she, as we all agree, is the best.” Jack nodded to Alex.

Alex lifted his drunken arm, signalling high five. The three of them cheered and clumsily threw their arms in the middle of the table. At this point a fresh new face climbed the stage, ready to perform.

The men looked to one another, “Bring on the babes!” They all exclaimed with laughter.

*****************************************

Martha leant against the bar, waiting for Hannah to make the next drink order for her. She heard the roaring and laughter of a particular table of men and spun her head, looking over her shoulder. She couldn’t help but giggle.

“They’re idiots.” She stated to Hannah, “I know we get some weirdos in here, but they’ve got to be the worst kind. I mean, the others come in for the atmosphere; they come in for the experience.” Martha sighed.

Hannah smiled to herself, moving along the bar and handing Martha the requested drinks.

“I know… but they do give the best tips.” She told her with a wink. “And they’re the kind that’d go to the boss and compliment; go to Claire perhaps.” She suggested with a smirk.

“Well, I don’t know…” Martha said uncomfortably, looking to the bar surface.

“Don’t you want to keep your job?” Hannah asked rhetorically.

Martha groaned, looking up at Hannah for a moment. Yes, Martha wanted to keep her job. But she’d been avoiding taking desperate measures like this. ‘You can do it, Martha.’ She told herself, pushing her body from the bar and picking up the drinks.

“So, are you going to?” Hannah asked, already knowing the answer. Martha nodded silently, moving off to serve the customer.

******************************************

“So this is why Fitzy didn’t come...” Jack realised with a smirk.

Alex laughed, “Yea, it’s not really her thing.” He picked up his glass and raised it to the middle, “But it’s ours! Cheers!!”

Jack and Davie grinned at yet another toast, and banged their drinks in the centre once more.

Jack looked around the bar as he drank, looking at all the other men. To be honest, they seemed like the only guys to be enjoying themselves. Sure, the others were having fun, but they barely showed it. They sat with their beers, staring to the stage as thoughts troubled their minds. If Jack looked closely, it was obvious as to why. The men were upset.

Jack sighed, nodding to himself. He knew why, and he could empathise with the lonely souls. Probably some sort of break-up; whether it marriage or not. He could relate to that, as his own marriage had ended a few months ago. No matter how strong a man is, nothing can keep him stood firm when something like that happens. When the woman they love dearly announces that it’s not mutual, and wants to take a step out of their life.

Jack would have begged. He would have moved the sun and stars to keep Martha by his side; but he knew in the end that it simply wasn’t good enough. He couldn’t make her love him, and that was a fact. He’d blown it; slowly he and his work had sucked the love from their once perfect relationship. It was done. Over. Dead.

But it was getting easier now. Sure, he still had the dreams of them when they were together, and the moments that he still thought they were. And definitely the times where he missed her. Such as in the morning; that is probably the time of day that hurt him the most. Rolling over to the empty space, feeling the cold sheets beside him; just like his heart. It was cold; it was empty and longed to love someone. Which is why, he assumed, he fell for Sam. He could love her, he could care and protect her from everything; but he never got the same warm feeling from her smile as he did Martha’s. He was now worried whether he’d ever get that feeling again from another woman, because he missed it so much, along with her.

Alex looked away from the woman on the stage and looked at an absent-minded Jack. He was as white as a ghost, and staring at his hands. The wrinkles in his forehead showed thought, and his eyes showed sadness.

“You okay mate?” Alex asked him.

Jack looked up at Alex, putting on a small smile and nodding. “Yea, I will be.” He said.

Alex watched as Jack took a large gulp from his beer, and turned his attention to the women around the room, lacking the enthusiasm he had had before.
