“You know we belong together. You and I forever and ever. No matter where you are, you’re my guiding star. And from the very first moment I saw you, I never felt such emotion. I’m walking on air, just to know, you are there. Hold me in your arms, don’t let me go. I want to stay forever, closer each day. Home and away.” – Home and Away theme song

CHAPTER ONE: Home And Away

The sun began to set in a neighborhood, which was far from normal. Street races in the middle of the night, screaming neighbors during the day, and family punch ups during supper time. Yes, this was far from your normal average neighborhood, where fathers come home drunk and where children beat up their mothers, leaving them stranded too bleed alone on the kitchen floor.

Dean Miller lounged himself on the family’s dirty couch as he slowly switched the television channels with his remote whilst drinking a bottle of his dad’s cold beer. Spilling a bit on himself, he picked up a cushion from the floor and wiped the mess off his t-shirt. Beginning to get annoyed with the shirt he’s worn for three days straight, he took it off and threw it behind the television, lying back on the couch, topless drinking his father’s beer. As he let out a burp, his mother Rose charged herself into the room, with annoyance on her face.

“Where the hell are your manners kid!?” She yelled as she walked across the room, picking up the cushions which laid on the floor.

“Whoops.” Dean said, as he hid the beer between the legs, though was too late when Rose spotted the bottle.

“Where did you get that!?” She asked as she pulled her knotted hair away from her eyes.

“The fridge.” Dean softly said as he continued to watch the television, beginning to ignore Rose.

“And did you ask for your father’s permission!? You’re seventeen Dean! You’re not legal.” Rose continued to speak as she picked up a dirty plate on the coffee table and moved towards the kitchen.

“Shouldn’t you be at school or something?” She yelled from the kitchen, beginning to wash the dishes.

“At seven thirty in the night? Don’t think so.” Dean began to move towards the fridge, leaving an empty beer bottle behind.

Silence surround the small house as Dean continued to search through the fridge. Not finding what he was wanting, he slammed the door and moved back into the lounge room.

“F*ck!” Dean screamed as he banged his fist against the wall when a screaming Rose stormed into the room.

“What the hell is your problem!?” Rose screamed as she threw a sponge at Dean, watching him as he began to go through his backpack.

“Where’re out of beer!” Dean answered back as he continued to go through his bag.

“Well don’t drink it next time!” Rose said as she moved back into the kitchen. “Your father is going to be angry once he comes home and finds out there’s nothing left in the fridge!”

“Well like he needs another drink after coming home from the f*cking pub!” Dean said as he moved into the kitchen, heading towards the back door.

“Where are you going!?” Rose demanded.

“To get more beer! Where else?!”

“Your seventeen!”

“Not according to this.” Dean said as he showed his I.D to Rose, clearly showing that it’s a fake.

“Where did you get that!?”

“Get what!?” A voice spoke from the background.

Dean turned to face the voice, he took a small jump when he noticed his father; Ben behind him. When Rose or Dean didn’t speak, a drunken Ben moved towards the fridge, stumbling along the way and opened it. Staring into it for several minutes before slamming the door furious.

“Where the f*cks all the beer gone!?” Ben said as he looked directly at Rose, as his eyes turned into flames.

“Don’t look at me! Ask your son!” Rose said as she turned away, continuing to do the dishes.

“I was about to get some more.” Dean softly spoke, terrified as his father approached him.

“Did you buy that beer!?” Ben asked in annoyance. Dean stood there, not answering as fear crawled deep inside his skin. “What the hell are you doing, drinking all my beer!?” Ben said as he slammed Dean into the wall.

“Ben!” Rose said as she ran towards the two boys, trying to make Ben un-pin Dean.

“Get off of me!” Ben said as he pushed Rose into the table, making her bleed from her arm from a cut. As Ben faced Dean, his quickly blackened out for a few seconds when Dean took a swing at his eye.

“Argh! You f*cking prick!” Ben screamed as he threw Dean onto the ground and began to kick him.

Each kick, which was forced into Dean’s body, he felt like his sole was lifting from his body. Each kick that was made, he felt like he was going to vomit. As the heel of Ben shoe continued to dig into Dean’s topless body, blood began to trickle out as wounds were made. His vision and hearing began to fade away. All Dean could hear now was his mother’s voice crying in pain, as she demanded Ben to stop…

Five miles away, at a sea-side town called Summer Bay, a young couple began to make out on the sands of the beach as a small bonfire crackled besides them in the background. Wet, hot, passionate kisses began to be made as Ric Dalby and Matilda Hunter began to swap saliva with each other’s tongues. Ric began to move his hand up and down Matilda’s body as he laid on top of her. Both were blinded by their actions as they continued to keep their eyes closed, thinking that they were in a place, far, far away. Each kiss became faster and more passionate as Ric pulled Matilda’s top off. Kissing her down her neck, down her body and stopping at her belly button as he began to take the skirt off and placed it beside them. Taking his own top off, Matilda jumped on top of him, as she began to go down on him. Stopping at his shorts, and pulling out a condom from his pocket. Ripping it open, she pulled Ric’s boxer shorts off and the rest became history.

The next day, the morning sun in Summer Bay began to rise, revealing clear blue skies across the headlands. Brad Armstrong began his morning run on the beach that morning, and ran for at least half an hour. Passing the burned out bonfire from Ric and Matilda last night, he ran up the dunes and stopped at the top of the Surf Club where he began to stretch. Thoughts of his engagement to Sally circled around his mind as he couldn’t wipe the happy smile off his face. His thoughts were interrupted when he witnessed a body lying within the long grass, not far from him.

“What the hell?” Brad softly whispered as he walked towards the body. The closer he got, he noticed the body has been severally bashed when he witnessed the blood wounds on his back. As Brad rolled the body over, he received a shock when the young boy opened his eyes, and took a loud breath.

“You ok mate?” Brad asked the young boy.

“Ugh. Yeah… Where am I?” The young boy asked.

“Summer Bay…You look like you just got hit by a train mate, what’s your name?”

“Dean, Dean Miller.” Dean softly said as he placed his hand on his forehead, trying to calm the blood within his head to stop pumping so much, as a painful headache began to form inside.

As the sun reached noon in Summer Bay, Tony Holden sat in a home, which was blackened out by the daylight as a poker game was being played by three other men. Tony took a gulp out of his drink when he threw a few chips into the middle of the table. Releasing a smile, the man across from him smiled too as he placed double the chips into the middle, more than what Tony did.

“You really are cocky aren’t you?” Jeff said as he began to scratch his neck.

“No, just certain.” Tony chuckled as he placed the last of his chips into the middle.

“There’s certain… And then there’s cocky.” Jeff softly spoke as he threw his watch into the middle. The two other man began to make gasps when they noticed the prize was rising. Tony then placed his watch into the middle, along with his phone and wedding ring from Beth.

“Tony, Tony, Tony, Tony…” Jeff laughed to himself as he began to write a cheque. “Fifty thousand dollars.” Jeff spoke as he placed the cheque into the middle. Tony’s eyes froze and he stared at the cheque, realizing that there was more then two hundred thousand dollars in there. Playing up to his standards, Tony too took out his cheque book and wrote a cheque for seventy five thousand dollars. Jeff began to laugh as Tony placed the cheque in the middle.

“I could milk more money out of you, but I just don’t wont to.” Jeff said as he revealed his cards, a royal flush, all in spades. Tony’s mouth dropped when he noticed the cards and revealed his own, three aces and two red kings.

“Now, with you’re one hundred and fifty thousand in there, on top of the other one hundred thousand from the other night… I think that totals to two hundred and fifty thousand? Doesn’t it Tony?” Jeff said with a smart tone. Tony sat there in fright, staring at all the money within the middle, and then realizing that he just lost it all with a huge debt. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars worth…

That afternoon, Brad walked up to Sally from behind within the kitchen as he began to kiss her neck.

“What do you feel like doing tonight?” Brad smiled as he continued to kiss her.

“Well we can’t do anything, because we have company.” Sally smiled back, as she stared towards Dean who had passed out on their lounge.

“I can go if you want me too.” Dean said, giving Sally a fright. “Sorry, I was trying to sleep… I couldn’t though.” Dean said as he rested himself up.

“Do you remember, what happened to you?” Sally asked as she moved towards the lounge. “How you ended up here?”

“No… It’s still a blur.” Dean said as he rested his head against his pillow. “I should go.” Dean said as he got himself up.

“No, not until your parents arrive.” Sally chuckled as she watched Dean sitting back down.

“You called them?!” Dean said in a panicky tone. Sally and Brad looked at each other, realizing that calling his parents may not be a good idea.

“No, we were going to wait for your permission.” Brad said as Ric and Cassie walked in from the foyer.

“Sally, there’s a party down at the beach, we’ll be back by midnight ok.” Cassie smiled as she fixed up her hair. Ric stared at Dean, who stared back.

“Would you want to come mate?” Ric asked shyly as Dean let out a smile.

“Nah… I don’t have any clothes.” Dean laughed as he turned away.

“I can give you some if you want.” Ric smiled, as Dean smiled back. Ric took Dean upstairs, leaving Cassie, Sally and Brad all alone.

“Tell me again, where exactly did you find the hottie?” Cassie chuckled as she walked out through the back door.

Nighttime came as the party down at the beach began to heat up. The hormonal teens began to dance and sing as each one became drunk. At the bonfire, Belle began to make out with a footballer from Summer Bay High. Things became heavy between the two as she jumped onto of him, pushing her tongue deep down his throat. Across from the bonfire, sat Lucas, staring at her for minutes, to him, it felt like hours. Lucas continued to stare at her as his feelings for her grew, thinking it was him she was making out with. Down near the shore, Henry and Max ran up to Drew, where he stood staring out into the ocean.

“Yo Curtis! We’ve been looking for you!” Henry said as they approached him.

“How is it all going?” Max asked with a smile.

“What do you mean?”

“You know, the plan.” Henry explained as he jumped into the water. Drew released a smile after hearing what Henry and Max were talking about.

“Oh, it’s going great!” Drew said, letting out a huge grin he couldn’t hide.

“This is going to be awesome M once this gets out.” Henry laughed as he brought himself out of the water.

Matilda pulled away from her kiss with Ric as she moved towards the eskys which were full of alcohol. As she reached to pull a bottle out, she found herself tugging for it when she noticed someone else wanted it. As she looked up, she saw Dean standing in front of her. He stared back at her and began to smile as he passed the bottle over to her.

“Hi.”

“Do I know you?” Matilda asked with a smile.

“No.” Dean said with a chuckle.

“Should I know you?”

“Well that depends, on how you take me.” Dean slyly smiled as he looked out into the ocean. “I’m Dean.”

“Matilda.” Matilda smiled, continuing to stare at Dean. “I should be off… My boyfriend is waiting.” Matilda said as she backed away, still staring at Dean. Dean let out a chuckle and wiped his hair back after his heart skipped a beat.

The next morning, Dean sat on top of the fence posts outside the Surf Club. Ric noticed him there and walked over to him, giving him a fright.

“Hey mate.” Ric said as he sat next to Dean. “Sally told me this morning that you’re staying with us for a few days.

“Yeah, just a few days.” Dean smiled as he looked at Ric, then stared back out into the ocean. “I met a sheila last night. Hot as.” Dean began as his leg began to shake. “She hurt my feelings though, she has a boyfriend.” Dean chuckled as Ric laughed.

“Well are you going to do something about it? Do you no who the boyfriend is?” Ric asked.

“No, I don’t know who he is… But I’m definitely going to do something about it.” Dean grinned as they continued to stare out into the ocean. Both blindsided to the fact that they were both in love with the same girl.

Great chapter, Im really warming to Deans character although for some reason I dont think I should be. I wonder how Ric will react when he realises its his girlfriend Dean wants. I cant belive Tony gambling everything, I like how you have written his character as in H & A he comes across as having not many flaws at all. I cant wait for the next chapter this is a really great fic so far. Fanatstic writing Drew.
