He looked around the office but saw no one. He rubbed his eyes hard to see if he was dreaming or imagining it. Once again, he heard that person say,

“Oh come on now. Don’t look so surprised to see me, Detective Baker. It’s almost insulting that you actually forgot all about me.”

It was then that he saw her. He was shocked to his very core. He couldn’t believe it. No, he wouldn’t believe it. But, there she was. She was standing there right in front of him. All he could do was stand there and stare. He had no idea that his mouth was open and he looked rather silly just standing there looking absolutely dumbfounded.

“Oh, come on. Don’t tell me you didn’t miss me at all, Peter.... I mean, given our history with each other, I’d think that you’d be crying your eyes out.”

“You!” was all that he could think of to say.

“Yes, me! Why? You sound so surprised. Like as though you didn’t expect it at all.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Oh really, as if you didn’t know, Peter.”

“Zoe... but You’re dead!” Peter yelled trying to race towards the door but he couldn’t get out, she had already locked it, she started to laugh as Peter tried to escape but it was no use, she had him right where she wanted him, once again.

“What? You think you’re the only one who survived? You think that yours was the only death that was planned? Well, guess what, Detective? It wasn’t. Life’s a bitch. Deal with it.”

“How was that possible?”

“You’re the Detective, you figure it out. Oh wait, it’ll probably take you half a year to figure it out, anyway. Sometimes, I wonder how you became a Detective anyway. I would’ve done a better job. Heck, even your girlfriend was better than you, Detective.”

“You leave Clare out of this, you hear me?”

“Pete?!”

“Leave her out of this!”

Peter couldn’t believe she was standing in front of him, her of all people. But then again he should have known she wasn’t dead, she had fooled him before.

“Come on detective you don’t think you could catch me own your own”

“Just get the hell out of here” Peter screamed at the top of his voice and threw the nearest thing he could towards her.

Peter could feel himself about to loose it, for a split second he looked down and heard the door slam and she was gone again.

Peter ran up to the door frantically trying to get her but he came to a halt as Dan entered, “Dan?”

“Pete, are you alright?” Dan asked as he saw Peter sweating and breathing heavily. His complexion pale as white as though he had just seen a ghost.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.” Peter replied non too convincingly.

“Are you sure? Because I could’ve sworn that you were talking to yourself just now when I walked in.”

“I’m fine, Dan.” Peter snapped. And instantly regretted it. “I’m sorry.”

Dan knew he should be mad at his brother, the anger Dan felt earlier towards his brother was unbelievable but it seemed to suddenly go away when he saw just how pale his brother was, he stopped.

“It’s fine, mate.”

“I think I know why you’re here.” Peter managed to say calmly after having taken several deep breathes and closing his eyes and opening them a few times to see if it was really Dan.

“You do?”

“It’s about me hitting Drew, isn’t it?”

“Uhm, yeah....” was all that Dan could offer.

“Look, Dan, I’m sorry. I know that no matter how many times I apologize, it will not erase what I did to my own son. I feel bad for it. I really, really do. I just.... I just got so frustrated. Everything just gets to me. It’s like, every time I see Amanda or every time someone mentions her name, things tend to go wrong in my life. I just want to get my life sorted. I want to get this whole Amanda mess out of the way for the time being. But I can’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“I can’t do that because everyone is asking me to go see her and talk to her and forgive her and continue where we left off. And they think it’s easy. Even my son thinks it’s easy. When you’ve had your heart broken before, Dan, it’s not easy to just forgive and forget. Even if it had nothing to do with Amanda.”

“That’s true.”

“I’ve tried to move on. I really have. But every time I want to do that, I somehow get dragged back into it. And it gets annoying after a while. Amanda wants me to forgive her. But I can’t. Because, even if it’s not her fault, this whole mess would’ve been solved if she had only told me the truth earlier on. How am I expected to trust her?”

Dan stayed silent and allowed his brother to continue.

“I didn’t mean to hit my own son. I just got so worked up. And, what he said was the truth. I was walking away from everything. That’s what I’ve always done. When the going gets tough, I run. I can’t deal with things. It scares me that I hit my own son and that I could’ve done the same to Amanda if Jack hadn’t had walked in at the right time. I just want some time to think. I need space to sort things out. A place where no one comes up to me every second and asks me if I’m okay or telling me to go back with Amanda because we’re meant to be. Look, I admit, I love Amanda. I’ve never stopped loving her and I probably never will. But, I just need time to heal and space for that to happen. Right now, I feel extremely suffocated.”

“I’m sorry, mate. I guess I haven’t exactly been helping in that area. All Drew and I have ever done is make you talk about things. I should’ve known better. I should’ve known that when you’ve thought things through, you’d come to us. I’m sorry. From now on, I’ll give you some space. But, remember, if you need anything, you know that your family is here for you.”

“Yeah, I know. Thanks very much, Dan.”

“Well, I better get going. I’ll speak to Drew. Don’t worry about it.”

And with that, Dan Baker walked out of the office and Peter slumped back into his chair.

“Well, that certainly went well, didn’t it?” Zoe said sarcastically entering his office from the room next door.

“Get away from me!” Pete yelled scared as he pushed himself back on his chair

“You’re such a spoil sport.”

“What do you want?”

“Nothing.”

“I’m asking you again. What do you want?”

“I just want to have fun. I mean, come on, look at you. You’re so hopeless. You just tried to worm your way out of your brother lashing at you by pretending to be all upset and remorseful. But, deep down, you know the truth.”

“The truth? And what is that?”

“Didn’t you hear me say? You’re the Detective, you work it out.”

Silence filled the air.

“You’re hopeless, you know that? You can’t even do your job properly! What kind of Detective are you, anyway? I mean, you couldn’t even figure out who the Summer Bay Stalker was without Clare. And then, you couldn’t even figure out who the accomplice was"

“Shut up!”

“Oh, and then, of course there’s the whole failed relationship. no wait that’s relationships, there was Christy who is the mum to your son, Clare who choose her job over you, then Leah who choose your brother"

“Shut up!” Peter yelled furiously.

“Then there was Clare again because you fell for Leah who clearly wasn’t going to fall at your feet begging to be with you”

Pete looked at her and could feel his anger deep inside beginning to get the better off him but he just couldn’t do anything. Everything he tried, he wasn’t able to do, speak or move. He just had to look at her while he watched in shock.

“See, you were so work minded that you couldn’t even keep a hold on any of it” Zoe said laughing enormously at Peter.

“But Pete that’s not the best part of this!”

Pete stared at her, still trying to walk over or at least shout something back at her but he couldn’t…

“You know, the thing that makes me laugh the most is… even when you were so work minded you didn’t even work out that Kelli was plotting her sisters death from the minute she arrived in Summer Bay”

“Shut up!”

“And you know what the most pathetic thing is?”

“What?”

“You really thought that you had a chance with Tracey. I mean, really, how dumb were you to not know that she was in love with me to begin with? I mean, really. You are pathetic. You’re useless. And you know what? You’re going to be pathetic and useless your whole life. You walk away from things. Your life sucks. Why do you think your marriage failed? It’s because you were too trusting. Too trusting for your own good, Peter Baker. You’ll never learn.”
