Chapter 21

“Have you spoken to Kelli lately?” Kitty asked Amanda as they were having coffee in the kitchen.

“Yeah, briefly,” Amanda replied. “But I always feel as though she can’t wait to get off the phone.”

Kitty tried not to look Amanda in the eye. She knew that Kelli still blamed Amanda for the car accident they had when they were teenagers – Amanda got out fine, while Kelli is still recovering. Kitty knew that Kelli was still holding onto a lot of hostility and anger, that’s why she made her see a psychiatrist. Kelli was not happy about it, but she eventually agreed. Kitty only hoped that it helped her move on.

“We just aren’t that close anymore, not since the accident.” Amanda said glumly. “I feel like she still blames me.”

“I’m sure that’s not true.” Kitty lied as she took a sip of coffee.

Amanda just sat in silence as she took a sip of her coffee as well. She knew that Kitty was wrong, she just knew it.

As Peter got off the plane, he looked out the window and saw the city around him. It felt weird to be back home, but not as weird as the reason he was there. To see his son. He wanted to get back on the plane and fly back to LA, he was scared, but he knew he couldn’t do that. He owed it to his son, and to himself. So he headed off to baggage claim, he was ready.

While Amanda was in her room, getting changed, Kitty took a letter out of her bag. Enclosed was a secret. One that she had been keeping from Amanda for eleven years. As Amanda entered the room, Kitty shoved the letter into her handbag, which she put on the table next to her.

“Mum,” Amanda said, “I’m just going to the shops, Dan and Ryan should be home soon.”

“Ok,” Kitty replied nervously.

Then Amanda reached for her keys that were sitting on the table. As she grabbed them, she accidentally knocked Kitty’s bag onto the ground, spilling the contents everywhere. Kitty scrambled to pick everything up.

“Oh, sorry Mum,” Amanda apologised as she bent down to help.

Kitty saw the envelope with the letter in it and reached for it, but Amanda got it first.

“Who are David and Judith Taylor?” Amanda asked as she read the name on the back of the envelope.

Kitty looked at her nervously as she tried to come up with a lie.

“Umm, they are just old friends that I’ve been keeping in touch with,” she lied.

Amanda looked at her suspiciously.

“Look you better go,” Kitty urged as she took the envelope off Amanda, “I’ll clean up here.”

“Oh, ok,” Amanda replied as she headed out the door.

Once Amanda had left Kitty let out a sigh of relief. That was a close call. She had been keeping the secret for years and she was not going to let it out now. She couldn’t let Amanda find out that the baby girl she thought she lost when she was fourteen was actually alive, and that Kitty stole her away from her, and sold her to David and Judith Taylor!

Chapter 22

“I’m home,” Amanda called out as she returned home from shopping.

“Hey mum!” Ryan yelled as he raced into the room and hugged her.

“They have a special bond don’t they?” Kitty commented to Dan as they waited for Amanda in the kitchen.

“Yeah, Ryan means everything to her,” Dan agreed.

Now if only she would show that, he thought to himself.

“Hey,” Amanda said as she entered the kitchen. “What smells so good?”

“Dinner,” Dan replied as he greeted her with a kiss.

“Mum, can I have some lollies?” Ryan asked excitedly as he spotted the lollies in her shopping bag.

“Not until after dinner,” Amanda replied.

As Amanda went to put some groceries in the fridge, Kitty whispered to Ryan, “I have some lollies in my bag, why don’t you go and get some.”

Ryan ran over to her bag and begun rifling through it for lollies. Unfortunately for Kitty, Amanda overheard what she told Ryan.

“Mum! Do not go behind my back and give my son something I told him he couldn’t have!” Amanda yelled. “Ryan do not have any lollies!”

“But Amanda…” Kitty began, but was interrupted by Ryan returning to the room.

“Grandma, who’s the girl in this picture?” Ryan asked as he held up a photo.

Kitty went to take it from him, but Amanda snatched it away first.

“Yes mum, who is it?” Amanda asked suspiciously, looking closely at the photo.

“It’s just my friend’s granddaughter,” Kitty lied as she tried to take it, but Amanda pulled it away.

“You have a picture of your friend’s granddaughter in your bag?” Amanda replied, becoming even more suspicious.

“Yes, that’s what grandparents do.” She replied nervously. “We show off out grandchildren to our friends.”

Amanda didn’t buy it. Kitty looked very nervous and uneasy when asked questions about the photo. She was hiding something.

“So some stranger has a photo of my son in their possession?” Amanda asked.

“Amanda, don’t be so dramatic,” Kitty replied.

Amanda just looked at her, so Kitty decided to change the subject.

“Now, I’m going to go and get cleaned up before dinner,” she said, taking the photo from Amanda and heading to the spare room.

*****

Kitty paced back and forth in her room. How could she have been so reckless? After years of keeping the secret it had almost been uncovered twice in one day. What would happen if Amanda had read the letter from the Taylor’s? What would have happened if Amanda had discovered that the girl in the photo was actually her daughter, Belle? Kitty couldn’t take anymore chances, she had to leave before Amanda uncovered the truth.

“Mum are you up yet?” Amanda called out as she emerged from the bedroom the next morning.

“She’s not in bed,” Dan told her as he walked past Kitty’s room.

“She’s not in here either,” Amanda added as she became curious as to her mother’s whereabouts.

“What’s this?” Dan asked, picking up a note off the table and handing it to Amanda.

“Oh my God!” Amanda exclaimed as she read the note, “she’s gone!”

Chapter 23

“I’m sorry that I had to leave, but I landed a movie role.” Amanda read from Kitty’s letter. “Please accept this gift as an apology.”

Dan looked on the table and saw a piece of paper where the letter was sitting, it must have been placed under the letter.

“What is it?” Amanda asked as Dan examined the piece of paper.

“It’s a trip for two, to Las Vegas.” He replied excitedly. “But where did she get the money from?”

“I told you she was conning us,” Amanda said angrily.

She was unable to believe that her mother could just walk out like that. Although she shouldn’t have been surprised. Kitty was always selfish and never put her kids first. That’s the way it always was, and that’s the way it was now.

“But that doesn’t mean we can’t go, does it?” Dan asked hopefully.

“No, we can still go,” Amanda replied as a big smile crept across Dan’s face. “But that doesn’t let Kitty off the hook.”

“Yeah, ok,” Dan responded, “I’ll just call mum and see if her and dad can mind Ryan for the weekend.”

“Damn you Kitty,” Amanda muttered to herself once Dan had gone to call his parents.

*****

“Yes, Christy informed us that you were coming.” The principal told Peter. “I’ll just go and get Andrew for you.”

“Ok, thanks.” Peter replied nervously, as she left the office.

Peter sat anxiously in the principal’s office. He hadn’t been in one since he was 17, but it wasn’t a common occurrence for him. He was a reasonably good kid, it was Dan who was the trouble maker.

Memories from his school days started going through his head, and one face kept appearing, Christy. All those years he wondered why things had changed and now he knew. Now he was going to meet that reason.

As Peter wiped the sweat from his brow, he wondered what Andrew would look like, as he had only seen a baby photo of him. Would he look like him? Would he act like him? He sure hoped not.

His palms were sweaty as he gripped the chair tightly. He couldn’t believe how nervous he was. “Get a grip Peter,” he told himself.

Then he suddenly heard voices outside the door. One of them he recognised as the principal’s, which means that the other one must be his son! This was it. He was finally going to meet his son. The principal entered the room with a young boy with thick, dark, curly hair.

“Andrew,” she said as the boy looked curiously at Peter. “This is your father.”
