PART 22 “I can’t believe they let me stay here tonight. That’s amazing.” Jodi nods against Paul’s chest. “Yeah, it is… Luckily Rhys didn’t have a problem with staying.” Paul laughs. “What are you kidding? He was so busy talking to Becky, he would have killed me if I told him that we’re leaving.” Jodi laughs. “Good point!” She suddenly frowns and looks up at Paul. “Do you think we should go and see Kate? I know that… there was a lot of drama and stuff, but… she’s still my friend.” Paul nods slightly and Jodi looks at him seriously. “We don’t have to go…” “I know. I’m just afraid that she’ll blame us for what happened too…” Jodi sighs. “I blame myself. So one more person who blames me won’t really make a difference.” Paul nods slightly. “We should go. It’s the right thing to do…” Kate stares at the ceiling, her hand resting on her stomach, her mind racing. What if she never told Chris that she wouldn’t be ready to move on? Then Chris wouldn’t have had the one night stand with Mandy… she wouldn’t have turned up at the door pregnant… Chris would have stayed there that night… she wouldn’t have kissed Paul… or had the fight with Jodi and ran off… gotten shot… She sits up with a gasp and Chris frowns. “Kate?” “It was Mandy…” She looks at Chris silently. “She… she said something about belonging with you and I remember I walked off and she was behind me… and I felt a pain in my back…” She looks at Chris, her eyes troubled. Chris looks at her silently before standing up. “In that case… it wasn’t Paul and Jodi’s fault. It was mine. So we should stay away from each other. I’m only going to hurt you more.” He walks out and Kate frowns. “Chris! Come back!” He ignores her however, and too weak to stand up, she falls down against the pillows, crying heartbrokenly. “Daddy!” Ava runs to Nic when he enters her room, jumping into his arms. He holds her, stroking over her hair. She presses her face against his shoulder, sobbing. “Daddy, auntie Amy said that she was going to give my toys away and that I’m a spoiled brat and she can’t stand me.” Nic holds her away from him, frowning. “Are you sure you heard right, sweetie? Auntie Amy wouldn’t say that…” Ava glares at her father. “I’m not lying, daddy!” “Hold on, I didn’t say that… Hey, stop crying now… we’re going to have a nice time, okay?” Ava nods slightly, still sobbing slightly and Nic strokes over her hair. “You’re daddy’s big girl, aren’t you?” Ava nods and Nic puts her down. “Well daddy’s going to get ready now. So you just dry those tears and everything will be fine, okay?” Paul and Jodi frown when they enter Kate’s room to find her sobbing on the bed, hugging her pillow. Jodi rushes forward, looking worried. “Kate? What happened?” “It’s… Chris…” “What? What about him?” Kate shakes her head, tears flowing over her cheeks. “He… said that we couldn’t be… together anymore… because… he’ll just hurt me more…” Jodi hugs her closely, a frown on her forehead. “That’s crazy! Why would he think that?” “Because… it was… Mandy who shot me… And now… he feels, I don’t know, guilty or something… I love him so much… the thought of him kept me alive… and now he’s gone… He just walked out on me.” Jodi hugs Kate closely, frowning. “He’s just shocked, Kate. I know Chris loves you… just give him a chance to get over this, okay?” Kate nods slightly and looks at Jodi. “Thanks, Jodz… For knowing what to say…” “That’s what friends are for.”
