To help chances of fostering Bobby who was having problems with the Fletchers and also the whole "I let you get away once, it's not happening again thing" plus the surprise factor. They were gearing towards Frank/Roo and likely didn't want A&A stealing focus.

I also imagine scheduling was a thing as Judy had  to prep for her own wedding to Bruce in real life around the time of filming.

So several possibilities

These possibilities do sound plausible. I am just cynical about the idea of "secret weddings", hence why I posted this question

Some couples can't be arsed with the big church do or get fed up with exec meddling from parental figures (Leah and Dan almost considered that when their respective Mums Helen and Noelene basically took over ahead of theirs), siblings, friends, etc and say "Screw it, Let's elope!" or just want a private ceremony (either immediate family or just the couple, ala A&A)

In the US, some people do the Vegas thing ("Elvis" does his thing ??) and over here, couples of the teen variety will leg it over the border to Gretna Green (16 is the legal age in ???????,  the noo, though they're trying to shut that dken)

I'm not sure there was any great plan. Judy Nunn was getting married in real life and maybe the producers didn't realise what an iconic couple Alf and Ailsa would become? The alternatives are:

1. They had the wedding in secret because of Roo

2. The viewers not seeing the wedding made the marriage seem a bit less real and more fragile. Perfect for the drama that was to come next, culminating in the marriage split and Alf's tearful phone call to Ailsa. There was something cathartic about the renewal of their vows in front of their friends.

Alf & Alsa got married before they were ready. It was rushed. Alsa could have moved in to Alf's house to live with him, to get used to the idea, before proceeding with the wedding. It's a pity bigots like Vera Bennett have a bee in their bonnet about couples living together before they are married.

Did we ever see where Ailsa lived before she moved in with Alf?

Yes. At the beginning Ailsa was running the Hogan's General Store. She lived in the annexe behind it. Later Frank and Bobby rented this place until Dodge burned it down, killing Steven's uncle Phillip.

The only way that one would be able to decipher that reasoning now would be to contact Bevan Lee and hope that he even remembers (after 35 years) why he wrote a "secret wedding" for Alf and "Alsa".

The life choices that fictional characters make are at the sole mercy of Producers and Scriptwriting teams.

You could say the same about several couples in that era. Pippa and Michael is another older couple who had tied the knot within months of meeting. Though strangely, that seemed to make sense (chemistry between the actors?) whereas Alf and Ailsa's union didn't. I was surprised by that when I re-watched that first season. I remembered them as a solid couple with a "married for years" feel to them. Does anybody know how long they had been seeing each other before H&A started? It didn't seem to be a relationship that was going anywhere, until it was.
