Enjoy Chapter 17: (4 days later) Following the ‘bathroom’ incident, Martha had done everything in her power to avoid Jack completely. Not that that was actually hard work, truth be told, he hadn’t been around that much, and when he was around, he seemed to keep his distance. Maybe he had finally seen the light and realised whatever ‘connection’ they had, was strictly off limits. After all, their lives were far too complicated to be thinking about relationships or casual sex (as Jack probably would have preferred). The fact was, they were family, and no matter how much they craved each other, family was the way it would stay. The sound of bustling and laughing could be heard down the hallway. Hopping off her bed, Martha went to investigate… “Aww, look at you blushing”, Jack teased his baby sister, gently tugging at her rosy pink cheek, “Admit it! You like him don’t you” he cooed in a childish voice. “Ugh! As if!” exclaimed a rather melodramatic Elena, as she whacked away his fussing hand. Frowning her forehead, she pouted her lips in her usual sulky manor, “Benjamin’s annoying” she began, “and anyway, I don’t even like boys; they’re all stupid … and they smell,” she scrunched up her nose as she whinged at her older brother. Martha chuckled to herself as she watched them down the hallway. They were always quite comical when they were together… “Hey Martha” beamed Eli as she noticed her sister standing by her bedroom door. “Hey there missy, I hope you’re not causing trouble” she grinned back. “No” she groaned, “but Jack is” she added with a smirk; trying to suppress her little giggle. “I was just telling Jack that all boys are stupid" she told her, "they are ... dont you think?" she looked up at her sister with wide eyes; her head tilting to the side as she waited for her to reply. “Oh absolutely!” she stated aloud; her head nodding in response, “boys are stupid. You don’t even want to go there; trust me” she smirked at her little sister, before glancing up at Jack. Their eyes locked for a brief moment; a slight awkwardness in the atmosphere, as they acknowledged each others presence, before Martha quickly glanced away, turning back to her sister. “Seeee” Eli cheekily bobbed her tongue out at Jack before smiling sweetly. “Yeah yeah” he rolled his eyes; his mouth curving into a grin, “you two always stick together”. “That’s because we talk the most sense” she held her head up high through pride. “Oh, is that right” he spoke in a chuckle. “Yah-hu” she nodded back, “now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go and powder my nose” she mocked a fake posh accent, walking away and strutting her stuff; doing her model impression and undoubtedly feeling rather pleased with herself. Jack and Martha watched in amusement as she waltzed away, before their smiles gradually faded and their eyes were brought into line. Unaware of what to say, Martha shuffled on her feet, “Umm, I guess I better get back to the revision then” she awkwardly spoke up. “Oh … yeah … sure” he replied; his face frowning slightly through his discomfort. Flashing him a small and uneasy smile, she turned on her heel, re-entering her bedroom and closing the door… ……………………………………… (Two days later – A week after the bathroom incident) “Ok cool, I’ll see you later” she heard Jack mumble as she walked down the hallway and towards the front door. Closing the door behind him, he turned to face Martha; whose face displayed a look of inquisitiveness… “Who was that?” she enquired, curious to discover who he was talking to. “What’s it to you, nosey” he scoffed. She narrowed her eyes at him “Just tell me who it was Jack”, she answered through aggravation. Thankfully they were back on speaking terms … well, if you could actually call it speaking!? “Well, if you must know” he said with the roll of his eyes, “that would be my new girl friend” he replied in a smug tone of voice; noticing her scowl at his comment. “Your new girl friend?” she repeated his words, raising her eyebrows at him. Despite Jack being a bit of a player, she’d never known him to actually have a girlfriend. “Yeah, that’s right,” he grinned at her, “although I believe you call her, Lisa” he added smartly. Her eyes shot open in fury, “you’re going out with Lisa? MY BEST FRIEND LISA!?” she raised her voice at him. “Yep, aren’t you happy for me little sis” he flashed her a sarcastic grin. She narrowed her eyes at him, completely un-impressed that he would sink this low. “We both know you can’t stand her, you’re only doing this to spite me!” she yelled back. “Can’t you see how cruel this is! You’re totally messing her around! And there’s no need for it! Lisa really likes you Jack; she doesn’t deserve to be hurt!” She rambled on in her state of frustration. “And why would I hurt her? Have you ever thought that maybe I actually like her” he looked at her with a straight face, almost appearing so genuine, but Jack was a good actor when he wanted to be, so who knew if he was telling the truth. “No” she shook her head, “nu-uh, you can barely stand her. You’re only doing this because you knew it would annoy me”. “Oh really, and why should it annoy you Martha?” he asked her sweetly, “you don’t want me like that, remember” he mocked her with a smile, feeling rather pleased with himself, before brushing straight passed her and walking off into the living room… She glared daggers at his back as she watched him walk away … he could be such a pain at times! ……………………… “Hey Mac” Lisa called out as she happily skipped into the Holden’s living room; Jack close in toe. “Oh, hey” she forced a small smile in return; swivelling around in her chair to face her. Inside however, really not up for much company. “Sooo, I was thinking of having a house party this weekend, what with my parents being away and all, it’s the perfect excuse to let our hair down and have some fun” she grinned, her eyes opening wide through eagerness. “Oh right … yeah, sounds good” replied Martha; a little unconvinced. “Ok cool, I’ll let you know the arrangements” she hopped off the couch and over towards Jack, “I better get going. I’ll see you soon though yeah” she smiled as she leant up to kiss him. Inside Martha couldn’t help but cringe, there was nothing worse than seeing Jack kissing another girl … but kissing Lisa! That was just wrong on so many levels! “Bye guys!” she called out as she left down the hallway… And then there were two… *Ring* *Ring* “Who’d be calling at this time?” Jack muttered to himself as he strolled over towards the phone, picking it up and placing it to his ear. “Hello … Oh, hey Tony, what’s up … yeah, hang on…” Placing the phone onto the receiver, he flicked on the speaker phone. “Hey guys. Bit of a problem, I got a call from one of my sellers earlier today, they’re having some money issues with my latest order, so Kate and I are going to have to drive down there tomorrow and sort it out. We shouldn’t be too long though, maybe 4 days at most” he spoke down the phone line. “Oh, you’re kidding,” Martha replied to the sound of her father’s voice. “Is everything going to be ok?” “Yeah, it’ll be fine love, I’ll sort it” he chuckled softly, “but I need you to look after Elli for me; she can’t come along unfortunately” he spoke with a hint of annoyance. “She shouldn’t be any trouble though, I’m fairly certain she’s staying at a friends house for a few nights, so you’ll barely see her, but just keep an eye on her yeah, I don’t want to lose anything else this week” he smirked on the other end of the phone. “Yeah, no problem”. “Right, that’s sorted then. I’ll see you guys later. Be good”. Cancelling the speaker phone Jack turned towards Martha. “Well” he clapped his hands together in amusement, “alone again huh” he flashed her a cheeky grin, “you think someone’s trying to tell us something?” he smirked back. She shot him an un-amused glare; her head gradually shaking from side to side as she closed her eyes in disbelief. So much for Jack letting it go, thought Martha. Clearly their ‘moving on’ agreement was only one sided. And how could this be!? Jack and Martha alone in the house for over 4 days!? Was this some kind of sexual-tease to drive her insane!? To punish her for failing her exams? Whatever it was, it was certain that the next 4 days would prove to be a handful… Preview: Martha hits the drink And mixed signals are being thrown Jacks way
