I understand uni comes first. I know what you're feeling. It's my last year too. Only 14 weeks to go ( <_< ) and it will finally be over.:D 20 years of school is way too long.

I'll definitely keep on reading your fic when you have time to update. :)

Good luck with your exams, assignments... :D

Chapter 20:

“You know, I’ve been thinking,” began a tentative Lisa, “since your family’s away for the week and you have the place almost to yourself” she let out a small giggle as she stood at Jacks side, “I was wondering … if I could maybe stay the night?” she raised her eyebrows at him, wrapping her arms around his waist as they stood by the window of his bedroom.

“Oh, right … um” he frowned, a sudden surge of unease running through his body as her comment caught him off guard. “Well, I’d love you to stay, obviously,” he smiled, but quickly continued, “it’s just … Martha” he paused, not quite knowing where he was going with this one, “she’s, umm, well, you know, she’s studying and could really use the quiet” he answered; silently praying she wouldn’t question it…

“Oh yeah, of course, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have even asked” she apologised; mentally kicking herself for not giving Martha a seconds thought.

“No don’t be silly, it’s totally fine you asking” he ran his hand up and down her back as he turned his body further towards her.

“Yeah, well, Martha’s the top priority right now, as for everything else … I guess we’ll just have to wait” she smiled, before leaning inwards and resting her head on his chest.

“Yeah” he smiled through his discomfort; “I think that’s for the best” he finished in a mumble.

If he was honest, just the prospect of sleeping with Lisa didn’t settle well with him, and mostly because he knew in the back of his mind, he’d only be wishing it was Martha.

…………………………………

(An hour later)

“Mac, do you want a juice?” Lisa called out from the kitchen as she waved the carton of orange juice in her hand…

No thanks, I’m fine” Martha’s distant voice responded.

Standing in the kitchen she poured two drinks…

Hey, does Martha seem quiet to you?” Lisa hushed as she gently pushed the kitchen door to a close.

“No, not really, but I guess she’s got a lot on her mind”.

“Yeah, you’re right” she sighed, taking a seat beside Jack. “I seem to forget that she’s having to re-sit her exams, it must be really hard for her” she frowned as she thought about her friends current predicament; “she’s probably secretly panicking but doesn’t want to show it. Poor thing”.

Taking a gulp of her orange juice she placed the glass down onto the table. “Actually, you know what; I have an idea!” she exclaimed. “Forget the whole, ‘lets spend the day together’ thing, and how about you spend some quality time with your sister” she leant over and gave Jacks arm an encouraging rub.

“I’m sorry?” he laughed slightly, inside only praying she was joking. The last thing he needed right now was to be pushed back to Martha by his own girl friend.

“It’s obvious that Martha needs a break right now, not to mention some attention, and who better to give it to her than her big brother” she grinned; oblivious to Jacks sudden state of awkwardness, as he began to fidget in his chair.

He forced a small smile in return, “yeah, nice idea, but I’m not sure she’ll want me fussing over her. How about you just take her out something?” he suggested, doing his best to divert the focus elsewhere.

No” she emphasised as she spoke, “she needs her family right now; she can hang out with me another time” she persisted.

If there was one thing that Jack and Lisa had in common, it was persistence. Unfortunately for Jack however, he was beginning to realise that it was a somewhat unfavourable quality to bear.

“But…” he continued to protest.

“Oh please Jack” she stood up from her seat and walked behind him, wrapping her arms around his neck and resting her chin on his shoulder, “if not for her sake, do it for me, because I asked you too” she gave him a gentle nudge before pecking him on the cheek.

He inwardly groaned at his girlfriend as she failed to back down. Rolling his eyes he reluctantly agreed, “Fine, I’ll do it” he sighed.

It wasn’t often that Jack Holden would do his utter most to shy away from spending a day alone with Martha, but lately things had felt different between them. It was no longer Jack playing games to win her over; in fact it seemed like the other way around. And now that Jack had a girl friend, his main goal was to take his mind away from Martha, but that was certainly proving to be a harder challenge than first thought.

10 minutes later and Lisa had made her exit, leaving Jack and Martha alone once again…

…………………

(30 minutes later)

“So, do you care to tell me why we're going for a drive?” Enquired Martha, as she sat in the passenger seat of Jack’s car, and buckled up the seat belt.

“Because I’m feeling generous and thought you could use the break, and …” he shrugged, “there’s nothing to do at home, so I figured we could drive until we found a bar or something” he suggested; occasionally glancing across at Martha but ensuring his focus was fixed on the road at all times, “at least it gets us out of the house”.

“Yeah, I guess … fair enough then” her words drifted away.

30 minutes later and they had arrived at their destination…

It was a new bar on the outskirts of town; it had recently opened and already had a great reputation, especially for the younger 20 generation.

Entering the bar they grabbed a drink, before taking a seat at the side.

Not long after and they had found themselves with unwanted company…

“How about a rose for your lovely lady”, a middle-aged man with a tub of red roses stood at there side, clearly eager to do some business. Unfortunately for him however, he was asking the wrong ‘couple’.

“Actually were not together, but, thanks anyway” replied a fairly blasé Jack Holden; who was currently fashioning an ‘I can’t be bothered’ type attitude, as he grabbed his drink and slugged it down.

“Oh, really” replied the man; a little over dramatic as he conveyed a look of surprise. “I’m sorry to hear that, I just presumed you were. You both look so beautiful together; you’re the perfect couple” he said as he flashed them an enthusiastic smile.

Yeah whatever,” mumbled Jack beneath his breath, rolling his eyes at the comment.

“Well, there’s no reason why you cant give your friend a rose sir, are you no gentleman at all!?” he frowned in Jacks direction; annoyed at his lack of manners in reference to his female lady friend.

“Clearly not” replied Jack in a mocking tone of voice, before flashing him a death stare.

“Its ok” Martha quickly interrupted, sensing Jacks growing aggravation, “I’m fine really. Call me old fashioned but I’d sooner have the man I love give me a rose. And seen as were not in love, it just really wouldn’t work” she smiled at the man; hoping he’d finally get the message.

“Of course dear, I understand … Well, enjoy your night.”

Once again they had found themselves alone, both sat forward on highchairs as they faced the bar; and neither of them feeling in the mood to talk. Eye contact was also at a minimum, in fact, if it wasn’t for the fact that they had arrived together, they may as well be strangers…

“That guy was a pain in the ass” said a glum Jack as he spoke out from the silence; keeping his eyes fixed forward as he took another swig of his non-alcoholic beverage.

“He’s only doing his job Jack … its called earning a living” she released an irritated sigh. “I think I’m going to get some air” she glanced across at him, “I’ll be outside”.

Hopping off the chair, she made her way out of the bar…

Now, sitting alone at the bar, he took a wide-eyed scan around; noticing a couple of young attractive brunettes in the far corner who gave him a smile, of which he happily returned; before he turned back to his drink, feeling lousier than ever.

Finally downing the last of his drink, he rose off his chair and made for the exit…

“So tell me” The man from before came up behind him; except this time his accent was a little less than posh, “why is a good looking guy like you not with a stunner like her?” he questioned him.

“Oh great, not you again” an annoyed Jack spoke outloud through gritted teeth; not seeming to care that he might hurt his feelings.

“Let me guess” the man continued, ignoring Jacks previous comment; “you can’t find it in your cold little heart to ask her out huh?” the man answered back. He too could be quite callous it appeared. “Or maybe you have, and she just has better things to do than waste her time with a guy like you” he exaggerated a smile.

“Yeah, or maybe you should shut the hell up!” Jack spat back; his frustration was beginning to get the better of him; and with good reason. I mean, who the hell did this guy think he was!

“OR, maybe a rose would get you both in the mood?” the man cocked an eyebrow as he held the roses out to Jack.

A flabbergasted Jack looked on, quite astonished that this man was so unbelievably determined.

“It’s just business man; we’ve all got to earn a living somehow” the man added in a matter-of-fact way; casually shrugging his shoulders and hoping he’d understand.

Jack rolled his eyes, he really wasn’t in the mood for this, and beating up a 40 something year old man because he was trying to sell him roses wouldn’t look so hot in court…

“Oh for goodness sake” mumbled Jack, “If I buy one of your roses, will you leave me alone?”

“Gladly” he smiled.

“Fine then, I’ll take one” he huffed; opening his wallet and grabbing a few coins.

Exchanging their items; money for a rose, Jack strolled off to find Martha…

…………………

He smiled as he looked at her from a distance, the rose held firmly in his hand as he mentally prepared himself to make his approach.

Walking up behind her he came to her side.

“Here” he said simply, holding out the rose for her to take.

She scrunched up her face in confusion, “What’s this?” she frowned as she looked down at the rose, “I thought I told you I didn’t want one” she moaned.

“Just take the damn rose Martha” replied an irritated Jack; “it’s the only way I could get that guy off my back” he scoffed; practically throwing the delicate flower into her hand.

“Fine … thank you” she shyly answered back.

Facing back out towards the open sea, she tried her best to hide the small smile that was so eager to creep onto her face.

For a brief moment she thought of an alternative reality, one where she would be Jacks girl friend, and Jack would have bought her this rose out of love …

It was just a pity that reality was everything but that.

They were brother and sister, not to mention Jack had a girl friend now … Lisa! Martha’s best friend!

Martha would happily live in her dream world if she was given the chance however, because lets face it, reality was pretty much screwed right now...

Preview: Both Martha and Jack get themselves into an unfortunate sticky situation ... (that rose has alot to answer for <_< lol). And tensions are running high as Martha struggles with her jealousy...

Note. I hope that chapter wasnt too hard to follow ... hopefully it should get better in the next chapter.
