Chapter: 39:

It had been a week since they had returned from their friendly-weekend-getaway, and precisely 4 days since Jack had broken up with Lisa.

Arriving at her house on the Monday morning, Jack had finally ended their relationship; it was clear to him that her heart was broken, but she appeared to take it relatively well. They had hugged it out and promised they’d remain friends.

Of course he was well aware that when the time came for he and Martha to finally pluck up the courage to come clean, the ‘lets stay friends’ line would quickly be ripped away. But that was just something he would have to accept. Lisa was a lovely girl, but Martha was his future, and as painful as it may seem, he would willingly give up his friendship and family for her. Because the truth was, he didn’t need anyone else but Martha. She was his life now…

“Hey” he popped his head around her door, “can I come in?”

She smiled as she turned to face him, taking her attention away from what she was doing, and signaling for him to enter.

“I just wanted to give you a good luck hug before you went” he said thoughtfully as he closed her bedroom door behind him; allowing them 5 minutes of privacy.

It was the day of her re-sit exams … otherwise known as … Judgment day! She only hoped that her revision would eventually pay off.

“Aw, you’re so sweet” she smiled as she rose from the bed and onto her feet. “I’m actually just packing up my stuff, I need to get going soon; I don’t want to be late”.

“Yeah, it’s probably best to go early”.

She glanced across at him with a small smile before she continued packing her bag, stuffing the revision notes into the pockets and then grabbing her pens and ID card.

“So … how are you feeling?” he tried to make conversation; his hands nervously finding their way into his pockets…

The atmosphere was notably awkward. In fact it had been awkward ever since they had returned from their holiday. She was undoubtedly drawing herself away from him, and it was beginning to reach a point where he couldn’t get two seconds alone with her.

And this wasn’t because everyone was always around. No, it was because she just never seemed to give him the time of day.

He only prayed to god that it was because of her revision, but he couldn’t help but feel there was something else. It was almost as if, now that they were coming to the end of their long and windy road of lies, cheats and sneaking around, that he wasn’t a very attractive option anymore, it was almost as if she got high on the danger and thrill of getting caught, and now that it was finally coming to an end, and it was time to be open and honest, he was somehow totally off her radar.

But that may have been his paranoia talking, maybe she really was just focusing on her exams, and when they were finally done and dusted she would welcome him back with open arms.

That was the hope anyway!

… She shrugged, taking one final glimpse of her notes, before shutting the bag completely; “I’m a little nervous, but … I just want it to be over now” she told him honestly.

“Yeah” he nodded in understanding. “Well, I'm 100% certain you’ll ace this. You’ve been putting the work in, so there’s no reason why it should all fall apart now”.

“Yeah, I hope you’re right” she revealed a small smile.

“Well, I better get going” she added as she threw her side bag over her shoulder.

“Yeah, ok” he smiled awkwardly, his feet unable to move for some strange reason.

Pulling himself together he spoke up, “…so how about that hug I suggested?” he smiled; taking his hands out of his pockets and encouraging her to come to him.

She smiled back; her face also indicating her slight discomfort, however she walked forward and allowed him to embrace her.

He closed his eyes and smelt her hair, as he wrapped her up in his strong and protective arms; claiming her as his own. It had been exactly a week since he had last held her … far too long for Jacks liking.

As the seconds passed by, they both found themselves relaxing.

Running his hand up and down her cotton-covered back, his fingers rose to touch her hair, weaving the soft strands through his fingertips.

Lowering his head towards the side of her face he gently kissed her cheek. His lips lingering for a moment, before they gradually moved around; hovering beside her mouth.

As his lips almost brushed her own, she cleared her throat, pulling away from him. “I think I better go. Like I said, I don’t want to be late” she said, avoiding eye contact as she stepped away.

Opening the door, she turned to glance at him once again, “thank you Jack ... for your support” she said simply; flashing him a small smile before leaving down the hallway.

“Er, yeah … sure” his words turned into a whisper; her reaction to his kiss had caught him off guard.

Turning around to face the hallway, he watched as she quickly rushed out.

It had been an hour since Martha had left, and Jack had barely moved 5 feet, in fact he had found himself sitting on her bed; cuddling one of her pillows close to his chest as he inhaled her sweet ‘Martha’ scent.

He was feeling sorry for himself. Never had he expected this day to be so … depressing.

This was the day when his dreams were supposed to come true. Martha would finish her exams and they would be free to break their news to the big wide world. Unfortunately it hadn’t quite gone to plan.

Martha was currently turning cold on him, Jack was down in the dumps, and even the chance to receive a kiss from her seemed to require a mountain of effort.

All in all, it wasn’t looking good…

“Hey there, day dreamer” Kim waved his hand in Martha’s face; interrupting her intense state of staring.

“Oh, hey. Sorry; I was a million miles away” she rolled her eyes before smiling.

“Yeah, so I can see”. He said as he took a seat on the bench beside her.

“So how’d it go?” asked Kim, who was eager to find out how her final exam had gone.

Turning to him she replied, “I think it went ok” she began, with a slight bob of the head, “I wasn’t struggling for things to write, which is always a plus. But, who knows” she shrugged, “all I know is, I don’t fancy re-sitting that exam for a third time!” she rolled her eyes with a groan, “So, if I at least scrape a pass, I wont be complaining.” She added; her expression displaying a true representation of how fed up she really was.

“Yeah well, cheer up chuck” he gave her a playful nudge, “its all over now, you can relax”.

“Yeah” she sighed a long exhale, “I guess”.

But relaxing wasn’t really an option. What with the upcoming pressure of revealing the details about her relationship with Jack to her family and friends.

“So now that you’re free from exams, don’t you think its time to face a few other demons?”

She turned to him in question; her face frowning. Not quite knowing what he was referring too.

“You know, maybe its time to start being honest" he added. And not just for your family’s sake, but for Jacks as well” he told her, “It’s the least they deserve ... don’t you think?”

She nodded slowly, her face turning serious and her forehead continuing to frown as she stared into the open air.

“I know you’ll do the right thing eventually Martha”, he finished, before walking away and leaving her alone with her thoughts.

Hearing the door slam shut he excitedly sprung from his seat.

Following the sound of the footsteps into the kitchen he came across a tired but relieved looking Martha.

“Hey!” he exclaimed with a grin. “It’s all over then”.

“Hey,” she turned to him, “yeah, pretty much. Well, until I have to re-sit them again” she all-but-growled, before smirking.

“Aw, don’t” he chuckled lightly, “you’ll be fine. I’m certain of it”.

She smiled in appreciation, grateful for his ongoing support. “Thanks”.

“So do you feel like celebrating?” he rubbed his hands together with glee.

“Oh, I don’t know, I’m not really in the mood for celebrating”.

“Celebrating?” a voice emerged from down the hallway; it was Tony. “What are we celebrating?” he turned to his two eldest’s in query.

“Oh, erm, Martha finished her last day of uni” Jack informed him; being sure to side step the part of her re-sitting her exam.

“Oh, sorry love” sighed Tony, “I completely forgot. Work’s literally taken over right now. I haven’t even had a second to think.”

“Its ok” she revealed a small smile.

“No, it’s not. I should have remembered. But Jacks right, we should celebrate, it’s a big deal”.

“Thanks but I’m really not that fussed, I think I just want to chill out in my room tonight”.

“Nonsense!” burst Tony, who was having none of it, “we’re going out tonight and that’s that! I’ll make the reservations!” He concluded, before walking out with a smile on his face; feeling the proud father he really was.

“Well, I guess the decisions been made then” said Jack as he spoke in a light and amused tone.

“Yeah, looks that way,” she laughed weakly.

“We’ll have fun tonight … As a family … you’ll see” he smiled at her sweetly.

“Yeah, I know. Thanks” she smiled back.

Her face however dropped as he made his exit; watching as he walked away.

She knew she shouldn’t be feeling like this. She should be happy, looking forward to her future with Jack and her family. But the uncertainty of her future was overwhelmingly unnerving, how could she possibly settle and enjoy life, knowing that her truth and honesty could result in her losing everything…

Preview: Its time to celebrate But Jacks finding jealousy is more on the cards than happiness.

You may not be sure you liked that chapter but i loved it (and the previous updates)!!... well i thought the writing was brill as always but i'm really not liking how Marthas shutting Jack out :( Sure she may lose her family but Jacks worth it!

And loving the preview.. i love a jealous Jack

Gosh I remember the last time I read this you were only up to chapter 30 lol . . . I've had some reading to do but I loved every second of it, and I was hooked from the start anyway

I know Martha is a lil down about having to tell her family and friends about her and Jack but there's no need to push Jack away because of her insecurities . . .

But great chapter . . .
