I don't know how Jack can keep putting up with Martha's crap. Me thinks not too long. He has a right to be peeved.

Ooh... Who's out to get Tony? But whatever it is, I'm sure it will be just another excuse for Martha to stall. <_<

Great chapter. More please.

Aww that last part was sweet. They made up. Hope it stays that way.

Hmm maybe Martha's friend, that guy, broke into the club. Just a guess lol.

Cant wait for more.

First of all - your chapters don't suck at all - they are really good! Keep them coming! Loving the last update - yeah - they're finally getting along again - it's about time

I can't wait to find out who has trashed the club - has Lisa finally twigged what's going on - surely she wouldn't stoop that low?

Please let them be honest with Tony soon - he's a good guy - he'll get used to the idea eventually!!

Chapter 44:

“This can’t be happening … our entire livelihood; it’s just in ruins” Tony spoke tearfully. Completely dejected at the state of his business; his disbelieving eyes wandering the area, watching as the officers dusted for fingerprints.

Standing in the main area of the club, were Jack and Martha.

“This is awful Jack” her hand rested against her cheek as her head shook in incredulity, “dads worked so hard to get this place off the ground, and now look at it” she said helplessly as she scanned her vision around the site.

“Yeah, and it couldn’t have happened at a worse time,” he groaned back.

Turning to look at him, she frowned, “yeah well, we can’t tell him about us now. Not unless we want to give him a heart attack as well” she said with the roll of her eyes.

“Yeah I know, I was just saying” he added in defence, as his hands slid into the depths of his pockets.

“I don’t like this … I’ve got this really awful feeling in my gut …” she paused, looking worriedly into his eyes, “what if this is all our fault Jack?” she lowered her tone to a whisper, “what if we caused this. I mean, I can’t even remember locking up” she placed her hand to her forehead in distress, “can you?” she questioned him, her eyes opened wide, praying that he could remember.

“I don’t know” he shrugged a little, his eyes too scrutinizing the leftovers of the club, “to be honest, last nights kind of a blur” he turned back to her as he pulled an awkward face.

“Oh great” she sighed in sadness. “So we probably are responsible for this”.

“No” he shook his head as he thought for a moment, “I don’t think so; something tells me this was a premeditated attack, like it’s been planned for days. It just so happened that we were the last ones in there” he told her.

“What makes you say that?”

“Well, I don’t know… but the safe was practically filled with a wad of cash, and maybe they knew that, maybe they knew that it doesn’t get cleared until the end of the week … it’s the perfect opportunity”.

She nodded slowly, allowing her mind to absorb his theory.

“So, in a sense, we kind of deserved it” he added in a matter of fact way.

“Jack!” she whacked him across the arm in horror.

“Sorry” he took a step back to gain balance; his hands rising in defence as he looked at her through discomfort, “that came out wrong” he apologized before correcting himself. “What I meant to say was, leaving so much money in there every week, makes us vulnerable anyway. So … we were kind of asking for it,” he said carefully.

She sighed a lengthily exhale, “yeah, you’re probably right”.

…………………………

“Right, I think were pretty much done here” exclaimed the sergeant as he walked towards Tony, “we’ve taken all the samples we require, and we’ll take them into the lab for analysis. With that and the security tapes, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to catch these guys” the sergeant told him.

“Ok great, thanks so much for your help” answered tony, as he vigorously shook the officer’s hand. Appreciative of all their hard work.

Martha listened intently as the sergeant informed them of their actions; her eyes opened wide in shock however, as she registered the importance of the security tapes.

Feeling her pounding heart thump with every beat in her chest, she remembered the events of last night. Freezing in a panic, unaware of what to do, she hastily forced her stationary feet to start moving.

Pulling Jack to one side, she anxiously informed him of the situation. “Jack, did you hear that!” her voice spoke in an anxious whisper, “the security tapes were running all night, that means we’ll be on them!”

His frown disappeared as her words embedded in his minds. Shooting his head to one side, he glanced across at the officer who held the tapes firmly in his hands.

Her words drew his attention back. “I do want to tell him Jack, I promise” she added in her state of hysterics, “but not now, not like this” she cried in a muted voice, shaking her head in devastation; her face wrinkling through her distress, and a single tear dropping down to rest on her cheek.

Encouraging her into the main area of the club, he replied. “Hey, come on now” he placed a comforting hand on her back, “don’t get upset, it’ll only arouse suspicion. And anyway, the police are taking them away. And there’s no reason why they’d give him the tapes back when their done; they’ll need them for further analysis” he tried to ease her concerns.

“Are you sure?” her voice shook through trepidation; as her hand roughly wiped away her tears, doing her best to hide any evidence. Like Jack said, she couldn’t risk arousing suspicion.

“Of course. It’ll all be fine, I promise” he gave her a small smile, before removing her hand away from her cheek.

Tenderly, he wiped away her tears, being sure not to bruise her flushed and rosy red cheek.

She smiled, relaxing for just a second, and letting her eyes close shut as he stroked her skin. Placing her hand onto the bend of his arm, she rubbed the material of his shirt between her fingers…

"God, what would I do without you huh?" she smiled as a sigh escaped her lips...

…………………………

Glancing through the doorway into the main area of the club, his eyes observing the two young and clearly quite affectionate individuals, the sergeant added … “… Oh, and it’s probably best that you tell your daughter and her boyfriend to go home, there’s nothing they can do now” the sergeant informed Tony as he collected his things ready to leave.

“Oh no” laughed Tony, “he’s not her … he’s my son” he smiled as he corrected the sergeant before him; inside a little bewildered at how this man could think Jack and Martha were anything but family; but he chose to remain silent.

“Oh, I’m sorry, they just seemed …” he trailed away as he thought of an appropriate word, “close, that’s all ... I guess I just presumed” the sergeant brushed it off with a smile.

But Tony’s suspicious eyes didn’t fail to notice his sideways expression as the sergeant turned away.

Frowning a little, but choosing to let it slide, Tony led the officers out.

“Well thanks again for everything” Tony waved them off. Releasing a long and exhausted exhale as he closed the door behind them.

Slowing turning around he eyed his son and daughter ahead, noticing as they stood side by side, Jacks arm hidden around the back of Martha, as he comforted her; just like any other brother would comfort his sister.

Pushing aside the sergeant’s earlier words, he approached them, “Hey, are you two all right?”

“Yeah, still in shock though” she answered, before moving forward and embracing her father tightly.

“Yeah, me too. Let’s just hope they catch them”…

………………………………………

(5 days later)

It had been midday when they had received their phone call, delivering to them the anticipated news they had been waiting for.

“Mr Holden, we’ve managed to catch the criminals that trashed your club” the voice on the other end of the phone had informed them.

Finally they could breathe a sigh of relief. The insurance had come through, which meant re-designing the club could begin, and those responsible for the crime were set to endure a lengthily prison sentence. As it turned out, Tony’s club hadn’t been the first in the firing line, and several other bars and shops in the city and town area had recently been dealt the same hand.

Thankfully with Tony’s security tapes to aid their investigation, they had caught those responsible.

Finally it was all in the past.

………………………

Or so they thought…

………………………

Walking through the empty club, Jack closely by her side, she came to the office entrance.

“Hellooo” she put on a funny voice as she knocked the door with her knuckles, and with an amused giggle they both stepped inside.

Their smiles quickly vanished however, as their attention was suddenly brought to the television screen.

Pausing on the spot, as rigid as stone, her breath caught in her throat.

“Dad, wh … what are you doing?” she asked with a shaky voice.

“Oh, hi love” Tony briefly turned around to acknowledge them, before focusing back onto the TV screen. “I went down to the station to thank the officers for all their help, and I managed to get the security tapes back” he smiled; pleased at his efforts. “They don’t usually give them back but I insisted … I want to stare those assholes in the eye” his voice ended with so much bitterness.

She could feel her hands turning clammy in her fret, and the sound of her heartbeat, almost thumping in her ears. “But, what’s the point, it’ll only make you angry” she added, her face in a permanently distressed frown.

“Yeah well, I know if I don’t face them, it’ll only play on my mind. I guess I’m just looking for some kind of closure or something. You probably think I’m crazy but …” he said in a light giggle as he shrugged; his words trailing away.

Quickly flicking her head to Jack, she silently urged him to do something.

“Errr, why don’t you just leave this for now yeah” said Jack as he came to Tony’s side, “we can watch this another time. Surely getting the club up and running is more important,” he added as he attempted to grab the remote control, unfortunately, Tony beat him too it.

“It’s alright son, I want to do this” he turned to him with a smile, before teasingly rolling his eyes at his children’s constant worrying.

The two watched with beady eyes as Tony fast forwarded the footage, before observing as he pressed play on two very familiar individuals…

“Oh hey, there’s you guys” smiled Tony as he pointed in delight towards his son and daughter on screen. Unaware of how close he really was to facing the harsh fact of reality. “I forgot you were doing the paper work that night”.

Her face continued to fall as the seconds passed by, bringing them ever closer to the inevitable.

Stepping back into the far wall, separating herself from her father as much as possible, she raised her hand to cover her mouth; concealing any words that threatened to burst out, while her eyes still opened wide, almost out on stalks.

Unable to take much more, just knowing that her lies and secrets were coming to ahead, the tears poured out, “Oh god” she whimpered; shaking her head as she put her hand to her mouth; her cries muffled through her palms, “I cant do this”.

Standing up, Tony frowned at his daughter’s odd behaviour, “Love, what’s wrong?” he asked in concern as he saw the tears streaming down her face; clearly she was distressed about something.

The only answer he received was that of a mumbled apology, “I’m so sorry” she sobbed, as he watched her in confusion.

As if his confusion could get any worse, he watched in astonishment as she ran out of the office in hysterics.

“Jack?” he questioned his son in a panic “What’s going in?”

But Jack had no words to respond with. An apology wouldn’t do much good now.

With his head slowly rising, he looked into his fathers eyes with sheer regret, “We never meant for you to find out this way” he finally spoke up, causing Tony to frown even more.

“What are you talking about? Find out what?” Tony shook his head as he spoke.

With a helpless sigh and no other words, Jack merely flicked his vision onto the TV screen, allowing for Tony to witness the true extent of their painful deception…
