Chapter 51:

What could be more perfect than waking up to a beautiful sunny summer’s morning?

Well, for Martha, it was having Jack's lips peppering her face with soft kisses, as she slowly began to stir.

Opening her eyes from the blur of the unconscious, she smiled, seeing her boyfriends face hovering above her, as he crouched down beside her bed.

“Good morning” he welcomed her sleepy form into full awareness.

As if his voice could get any softer and more seductive, it had done; thought Martha as she now lay awake on her bed.

“This is a nice surprise” she said as she ran her fingertips up and down the noticeable muscle in his tanned and well-structured arm.

“Yeah well, everyone’s in the kitchen eating breakfast, so I managed to slip away” he told her.

“Great” she continued to smile; “because I could do with a Jacky cuddle” she giggled softly, as she shuffled across and made room for him to lie down beside her.

“Alright. But just a little one” he grinned back; his twinkling brown eyes teasing her. “But only for a few minutes, we don’t want to make things harder for Tony”. He said as he happily slid inside, wrapping the covers around them both as he took her into his arms.

Moving her hair out of her face, he kissed her softly, being sure to inhale that warm and inviting Martha sent as he did.

“Can we go away soon?” she asked as their lips briefly parted, “I feel like it’s been a lifetime since we were alone”.

“Yeah I know” he sighed as he gazed into her eyes. “… Alright then. I’ll look for something on the net. Something small and cozy”.

“Cool, just make sure it has a clean room and a swimming pool” she told him. “Oh, and a sauna would be nice” she smirked at him, her eyes turning a hot sea blue colour through her lust.

“A sauna huh?” he cocked an eyebrow as he grinned at her; thinking back to one of their previous and most significant encounters.

She giggled as he kissed her hungrily, feeling as his hands slid up the length of her back tickling her body.

Their moans failed to conceal themselves as he pressed himself on top of her; her body squirming beneath him.

With gasping breaths they pulled away, “We definitely have to go somewhere … and soon” she spoke to him determined, before she giggled. Feeling as the ache below her stomach took its time to subside.

“Yeah, you’ve got that right” he nodded in agreement; his shorts sticking to his legs through the heat.

“Alright, I’m going to go before I get to the point where my legs literally stop working” he chuckled to himself before kissing her quickly on the lips.

Reluctantly pulling himself away, he took to his feet. Straightening his clothes and running a hand through his hair, he stole another moment to look at her. “Finally there’s a bit of colour in your cheeks” he said as he touched her cheek with the back of his index finger. “Are you feeling a bit better today?”

“Yeah, heaps better. I always knew you were my cure” she smiled at him.

“I’m glad” he smiled back. “I’ll put your breakfast on, ok” he told her as he stepped away and headed to the door. “Don’t be long” he warned her with a smirk, before he left through the door and closed it behind him.

Feeling a lot brighter and more at ease; she rose from her bed…

…………………………………

“Wait, Lisa. Please!” he urged her

“I’ve got nothing to say to you Jack, well, nothing other than, you’re an incestuous pig” she smartly answered back as she attempted to slam the door into his face.

With a firm shove he managed to keep the door open, “just let me explain, please.”

“Oh stop saying ‘please’ Jack, you sound so pathetic” she scoffed at him.

With a huff and a glare he contemplated walking away. Was she really worth all this strife!?

Knowing how much their friendship meant to Martha, he kept on. “Look, I can’t imagine how much you hate me right now, but…” he began.

“Actually, I couldn’t give a crap about you anymore Jack, its Martha that I hate” she interrupted him as she smiled through her sarcasm.

“Well, whatever. I’m just trying to …”

“Trying to what?” she continued to butt in. “Nothing you say will change this now. It’s done,” she informed him.

“Yeah, I know ... I’m not stupid. I know that we can’t go back and make things right, but, I at least wanted to say that I’m sorry, and that even though it seems like it; we didn’t intentionally mean to hurt you”.

“Yes, I know this, I’ve heard this all from Martha. So if you haven’t got anything knew or remotely interesting to say, then please just go Jack”.

“No!” he emphasized. “I’m not leaving until you’ve heard me out” he put a hand to the wooden door frame once again, as it almost swung hard and fast into his face, “I’ve got things I need to say” he told her firmly.

“Ugh! Fine then!” she grumbled. “But I’m speaking first! I think it’s only fair!” she ordered him with a piercing glare. Following a loud exhale, her face softened just a little. “Just answer me one thing …” he waited impatiently whilst she paused, an intense and thoughtful look filled her face. “Did you care about me at all?”

He sighed at her comment; his face falling in sadness, and his stomach turning through unease; he never wanted to talk about their relationship. Any conversation relating to their farce of a relationship would only make things messier, and Jack was certain of that fact. Besides, he was here for Martha, not for him. “Of course I did. I still do” he told her carefully. “And I’d really like it if we could at least try and be friends”.

She scoffed through a breath-filled laugh, her head shaking. “Well that’s the thing isn’t it. I don’t want to be just your friend Jack”.

He took a glance of unease away from her. “Yeah well, I can’t do anything about that. That’s something you’ll just have to deal with on your own”.

“Yes, and I was dealing with it, until Martha came along and handed me this big fat bag of lies!” she grit her teeth through her aggravation.

“Yeah well, like I said, I’m sorry ... Look, I didn’t come here to annoy you, or rub your face in it. I just came because I want you to think about something” he told her, as her face frowned a little. “… What does your friendship with Martha really mean to you? Because if it means as much as I think it does, then you couldn’t possibly just let it go." He watched as her head began to lower. "Best friends don’t come along very often, least of all lasting for more than 5 years. That’s almost unheard of these days…

…And I know that I’m not the only one to agree that a best friend is something to treasure ... Personally, I’ve never had one, but if I did, I’d probably be close to moving heaven and earth just to hold onto them … Just imagine for a second, what it would’ve been like, to go through school and college without Martha by your side. The one person who was there for you through your studies; to talk too, to support you, to give you a shoulder to cry on. I know for one that Martha wouldn’t have been able to do half the things she’s done, without your ongoing loyalty and support”.

Lisa nodded tearfully; deep down knowing that her own situation was very similar, Martha had been a pillar of support many times throughout their childhood and teenage years, “I couldn’t have gotten through anything without Martha” she confessed through her sadness. “But she betrayed me Jack” she cried.

“I know” he nodded in agreement. “She made a mistake. And it was a pretty damn hideous one at that, but she’s forever going to pay for it. She has to live with the knowledge everyday, that she broke her friends and her family’s hearts. And anyone can see how it’s already eating her up inside …".

Following a loud exhale, he looked directly into her glassy eyes. "… But someday, if you do ever give her the chance to explain, you might just understand why she did it ... Don’t give up on your friendship Lisa, it’s just … it’s so not worth it” he said shaking his head.

And with that, he gave her one last look of determination, before turning on his heel and walking away; only hoping that his words had done enough...

……………………………

“Martha? I’m home” Jack called out after having returned from, what he’d told Martha, was merely an errand.

“Oh hey” she smiled at him; but she seemed a tad distracted, while she walked down the hallway with her shoes on her feet and her bag in her hand.

“Hey, are you going somewhere?” he looked at her oddly; his face still smiling however.

“Yeah, I have something to take back into er, uni” she spoke vaguely.

“Oh right” he paused, a little confused, “I thought that was all wrapped up now.”

“It was, is, I mean. Well pretty much. I just have one other thing I need to do” she said as she stepped past him.

“Oh, ok” he frowned as he turned around to face her. “Well, do you want me to drive you?”

“No, not at all. I’d prefer to walk” she smiled as she latched her fingers onto the door handle and pulled, “I’ll see you later”.

“Hey Martha” he called her back. “Is everything ok?”

“Yeah, of course it is” she smiled back at him once again; noticing the look of concern in his eyes, but she tried her best to ignore it. “I love you”.

And with those final words, she was gone, leaving Jack alone and confused, left to contemplate her slightly avoidant and distant behaviour…

And he hadn’t even gotten a kiss goodbye…

………………………………

“Can I help you miss?” the lady approached her with a warm and helpful manner.

Turning around, Martha eyed the lady in the pharmacy coat and glasses; she had a professional yet easy-going approach to her, but no matter how gentle or kind this woman looked, nothing would take away Martha’s growing apprehension.

“Hi” she forced a smile, “Erm, well … I guess, I could use a little help…” she stuttered nervously.

“Look” she smiled as she placed her hand on Martha’s shoulder; trying to calm her concerns. “I’d go with this one; its simple to use and 99.9% accurate. You can’t really go wrong with it”.

“Oh, ok” she spoke softly as she took a hold of the small rectangular box, looking at it closely.

“The instructions are inside the box, but if you have any queries at all, just ask”.

“Thanks” she smiled in appreciation, before laughing lightly, “god I feel like such a mess at the moment” she put her hand to her forehead. “It’s hard to believe I woke up this morning feeling on top of the world, and now I just feel … well, pretty sick actually” she admitted with a sad smile.

“It’s a nervous time” the woman nodded in understanding. “And what about the father? Is he aware of the situation?”

“No" she shook her head. "I’m not going to tell him unless I have too. Like, if it turns out to be positive”.

“And, may I ask; what are you hoping for?” the woman asked with caution.

“In all honesty? I’m not sure I’m ready to be a mother yet. I love children, don’t get me wrong. I have a sister who’s 8 and I adore her, but … having a child of my own, well, that’s just another kettle of fish altogether”.

“That’s very true; it is. But whatever happens, I’m sure you’ll do just fine. And hey, if it does turn out to be positive; that mother instinct's bound to kick in sooner than you thought. You’ll be literally counting down the days to when you hold that precious bundle of joy in your arms. I can almost guarantee it.” She gave her a supportive smile as she placed a hand on Martha’s arm.

“Yeah, I guess so.” She spoke distantly, still not entirely convinced that the notion of mother-hood settled well with her. But maybe she’d come around to the idea, if necessary.

“Thank you, for your help” smiled Martha as the woman led her towards the counter.

“Anytime dear, anytime.”

Chapter 52:

She had been trapped in a daze during her long walk home; in fact, by the time she’d reached the family home, she could barely remember even going out.

Stepping into the hallway she gently closed the door, the hinge squeaking like a mouse as it was brought to a close. The house felt silent and still as she took a quick and not-so-thorough glance around.

With this time alone she could gather her thoughts and face reality. Which is exactly what she planned to do, as she closed the door to the bathroom behind her, and walked towards the sink.

Placing the rectangular blue and white box down onto the side of the basin, she took a deep breath, and, attempting to open it, she pulled at the side of the card.

As the door unexpectedly swung open behind her, Martha jumped out of her skin. Her heart beat thumping in her chest as she hurried in hiding the evidence.

Spinning around in a fluster, she eyed the culprit responsible…

“Elena! Do you mind!” she bellowed out as the innocent little girl stood in shock at her sister’s outburst. There’d been many times when Elena had accidently walked in on someone changing, but never had they gone off at her before.

“I’m sorry, I just wanted to wash my hands” she held out her muddy brown hands to her sister.

“The door was closed Eli! Which means you don’t come in! Its not rocket science!”

“Hey hey, what’s going on!?” a confused and questioning Jack rushed inside to see what all the fuss was about. “Martha?” he looked across at his girlfriend.

Noticing her sister’s large and now-glassy eyes fill up, she felt a pang of guilt hit her insides. “Nothing” she sighed as her head fell in shame, “I was just … changing, and she came in on me”.

“Oh, well, it was just an accident” he said carefully as he came up behind the little lady stood before him, placing a supportive hand on her shoulder.

“I know, I’m really sorry Eli, I didn’t mean to shout at you, I was just … startled, that’s all” she tried to smile at her clearly quite hurt little sister.

Elena nodded her little head; her thumb automatically sliding into her mouth for added comfort. That was her safety blanket.

“Baby, don’t suck your thumb ok, it’s all dirty” said Jack as he walked around and crouched in front of her. “Why don’t we wash those grubby hands of yours, yeah? I can barely see you through all that dirt” he teased her, while she giggled. A single tear drop falling onto her cheek.

Standing up he led her over towards the sink. His eyes didn’t fail to notice Martha in the corner of the room however, as she fumbled around with a plastic bag. Why did he get the impression she was hiding something?

Choosing to ignore it, he washed his sister’s hands, giving his own a good scrub while he was at it.

“All done!” he beamed as he dried their hands off with a towel. “Right, why don’t you go back outside and play, and I’ll be out in a second” he smiled at his sister as he encouraged her out.

Watching as she scurried away, he frowned a little, annoyed at his girlfriend’s temperamental manner; she had been acting weird all afternoon. Quite the opposite from how she was this morning, he thought to himself as he took a quiet moment to contemplate.

Turning around he faced her, “Martha, what’s going on? Is there something wrong?”

“What? No, of course not” she smiled through her nerves. She failed to hold his eye contact for long periods of time however. A classic sign of someone lying, thought a curious Jack, “Like I said, she just startled me. I honestly didn’t mean to blow up at her like that, she didn’t deserve it”.

“No, she didn’t. She just made a mistake. And we all make mistakes,” he told her, his eyebrows rising.

“Yeah totally” she grinned sarcastically, “and I know that more than anyone, don’t I!?” she scoffed at him, her eyes narrowing into a glare before she rolled them; sensing his comment was merely a dig at her.

“I didn’t mean it like that” he corrected her with a sigh of apology.

“Yeah whatever, it’s fine. What are you doing anyway? I thought everyone was out”.

“Yeah, dad and Kate are” he began as he continued to sense she was irritated, almost as if she wanted him out of the house; he couldn’t for the life of him imagine why though, “but I’m playing with Eli in the garden. Were making mud pies!” he exclaimed, “Or something equally as messy and delightful” he added in a smirk. “You should come join us; I know she wants to spend some time with you”.

“Oh please” she laughed it off, “she doesn’t need me, she has her big brother” she smiled at him.

“Actually, she does need you; she’s already mentioned it several times today” he told her. “So, maybe when you’re through with the bathroom, and whatever it is you’re hiding, you’ll lighten up a bit and come outside” he flashed her a glare of un-amusement. “We’d both really appreciate it”.

She watched as he walked away, almost shaking his head. He was disappointed with her, or just simply annoyed with her behaviour. But why exactly? Had she really been that moody?

………………………

Her head felt enlarged, her brain and eyes all fuzzy; was she floating? She thought to herself, as she took a look at the floor.

No, she wasn’t, she had her feet firmly on the ground. She only hoped she wouldn’t collapse though, as she walked out of the bathroom and into the living room.

Taking a seat on the couch, she felt her legs turn to jelly. Was this the feeling of happiness? Or pure dread? She wondered as she tried to overcome her state of delirium.

The process of waiting and contemplating had been a tense and nerve-wracking experience; just knowing that the result on the stick may potentially set out the makings of her future.

Thinking about it in retrospect, the result was barely a shock. It explained a lot of things. Like the way she’d been feeling during the last few days … the paleness of her skin, the sheer exhaustion, and the simple fact that she’d missed her most recent period, one of which she’d previously linked to stress.

Glancing out into the garden, she watched Jack and Eli play together. Their smiles glowing in the sunshine, not a care in the world past their minds. She was sure of it.

Noticing Jack now coming towards the house, she panicked, searching for something, anything as a distraction.

Settling for the magazine, she pretended to read…

………………………………

Returning from the kitchen after washing his hands, he slumped on the couch beside his girlfriend.

“Whatcha’ reading?”

She shrugged her shoulders, “nothing really; just crappy soap opera stuff”.

He nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on her profile as he watched her becoming absorbed in the magazine.

She seemed distant, almost grumpy about something, he thought to himself as she failed to look at him. Frowning a little, he chose to side-step a confrontation, and attempted to cheer her up…

“So, I looked at some weekend getaways earlier. There’s some really cute places about”. He began, as she finally turned to look at him, “I’ve got my eye on this little cottage out in the sticks, it’s so peaceful and sheltered; it’ll be like were the only two people in the world” he smiled at her; his voice dreamy as he spoke.

“Oh right” she replied, but not entirely enthused he noted, “yeah, that sounds great. But I’m not sure I want to bother now” she brushed him off as she turned back to her magazine.

“What?” he all-but-laughed, as he looked at her in disbelief, “Well that sure is nice isn’t it. I offer you a romantic cottage for two, a place where we can literally do anything we want, and you’d rather spend it at home with the family” he all-but scoffed at her response.

“Well, we don’t really have the money, do we” she went on to make excuses.

“Who cares, I’ll work over time, whatever. As long as we can be together, it doesn’t really matter” he looked at her through his puzzled eyes. “And may I add that you were the one that suggested it in the first place,” his eyebrows rose into his forehead.

“Yeah I know, but, I’ve been thinking a lot about it and, the moneys just not there. And I don’t want you having to work your ass off for me”.

“Correction, it’s for us! And who said anything about me working my ass off!?”

She shrugged her shoulders helplessly, struggling for the next excuse to come to her.

“Look, something’s obviously going on here, clearly something that I don’t know about. You’re hot and cold every two seconds. First you tell me you can’t wait to go away together, and now suddenly the thought of us going away doesn’t bother you? And I’m sorry, but I just don’t buy it” he shook his head at her, his eyebrows high and his eyes wide open. “Something’s up with you! So you either be upfront about it and tell me what’s going on, or were about to have a serious problem here,” he warned her with determined eyes.

Glancing across at him sheepishly, she looked into his eyes. “Nothings going on” she replied, before she found herself turning away, staring down at the magazine which lay in her lap; unable to hold his stare as his expression was rather unsettling.

He huffed at her ignorance, grabbing the magazine from her lap and throwing it onto the table, “You’re lying to me; I can see it in your face” he told her; his tone of voice suddenly lowering.

“Look, when has lying ever gotten us anywhere!?” he questioned her; knowing she knew that better than anyone.

“I know” her face continued to fall, “I just didn’t want to have to tell you like this, I haven’t even come to terms with it myself yet” she rambled on, while Jack just sat back, a million and one things running through his mind.

“Martha, what it is?” he asked her, a lot more carefully this time however. “Are you sick? Are you having second’s thoughts? What?”

Closing her eyes and scrunching her face up, she tried to force away her threatening tears.

“I … I thought we were so careful” her words were barely a noticeable whisper, as the tears in her eyes ran down her face.

“Martha, what are you talking about?” he gently pleaded with her, “You’re scaring me”.

Her eyes fell shut once again, and she whimpered; her mouth opening with a breath, “I’m pregnant”.

He pulled back, just an inch as he frowned, not sure if he’d misheard her. “What?” he questioned her, his own voice equally as soft and almost unheard of; had she said she was pregnant? Or had he simply misheard?

“I’m pregnant!” she cried louder.

His face fell into shock, his eyes wide open and his mouth slightly agape, as he tried his hardest to register this unexpected and breaking news.
