Ok, here comes a cruddy chapter as a result of a lack of motivation :(

I hope its atleast semi-decent

Oh and thanks to the people that commented on my old fics ... you know who you are

I read your comments and they really cheered me up; so thanks ^_^

Btw, I planned to give you a full description of the ceremony, but I really struggled with the content, so you'll have to make do with what I've written :P

Chapter 56:

(3 weeks later)

The church was humming with the sound of tiny footsteps, as the crowd from outside crammed into take their seats.

Martha and Jack stood at the alter, their baby held tightly in Jack’s arms, with Tony and Kate stood at their side; Elena in between them, wearing her pretty new dress with pride.

With anxious smiles, they waited for the ceremony to begin…

…………………………

His eyes flickered open as the cool holy water trickled over his forehead, his nose twitching slightly as he shivered.

Both Martha and Jack were captivated by their son, who squirmed delightfully in their arms, making the words spoken by the Baptist merely a blur.

I baptize you, in the name of the father, the son and the Holy Spirit…

And on that day, Jake Marcus Holden was officially welcomed into the world.

……………………………

(8pm)

It had been a long and tiring day, too long for Martha’s liking. If only she could curl up in her warm and comfy bed, just like baby Jake was doing right now. But no, it was her job to entertain the many guests that filled the Holden household.

Champagne, food and general banter was all that was required, but she wasn’t doing a very good job though, as she stood alone outside to get some fresh air. Entertaining certainly wasn’t on her list of priorities right now.

Truth be told, she felt somewhat overwhelmed. She was 22 years old, with a long term boyfriend and newborn baby. All in the space of a year; it seemed like madness, something a young woman probably wouldn’t welcome so early on.

Ordinarily, she would have been considering career prospects, or shopping, or the latest movie she wanted to see at the cinema. But instead of that, she had been contemplating baby names, or how many nappies were left in the cupboard, or pondering the terrifying notion that little Jakey might grow up to resent her.

Deciding on a baby name had caused the most upset, originally Benjamin had been the favourite, but Elena’s stubbornness failed to agree. Eventually ‘Jake’ and ‘Marcus’ were chosen, because according to Eli, they were the opposites of Jack and Martha, so it seemed particularly fitting. And Martha and Jack couldn’t complain, after all, it was a sweet and thoughtful gesture.

She couldn’t help but feel a little discouraged however, choosing baby names shouldn’t have to be their top priority, they weren’t even engaged … or setting up a house together (you needed money to be able to do that). So she couldn’t help but feel it was almost as if her early adult years had suddenly been harshly ripped away…

Thankfully though, it was only at times like this when she felt this disheartened, times when she was alone with her never ending thoughts.

Because the second she would step back inside, and hold that tiny bundle of joy in her arms, see him squirm and fidget ever so adorably, she would know it was all worth it. And her freedom and life as a young woman wouldn’t be missed any longer … because he was her life now. And nothing had ever meant this much to her...

The sound of the patio doors closing shut could be heard behind her. Turning on her heel, she eyed the one person she hadn’t expected to see today…

“Hey” began a hesitant Lisa, her eyes a little wary as she silently walked towards her.

“Hi” replied Martha, a little taken aback to see her ex best friend standing before her. They hadn’t spoken in months!

Lisa forced a small smile, “I just wanted to say congratulations. I heard you had a baby boy, I guess I just wanted to see for myself" she laughed a little "… curiosity and all that.”

“Yeah” she nodded back, “and thanks” smiled Martha, “I’m glad you came”.

“Yeah well I’m not staying” Lisa quickly added, “I didn’t come for the party, I just came to say … I’m glad it all worked out for you … that it was worth it”.

Martha nodded back sheepishly; knowing exactly what she was referring too. The whole Jack/Lisa/Martha fiasco from 10 months back. “It was" responded a cautious Martha "But I’m still sorry how it happened”.

“Yeah, well, it’s all in the past now” she forced a smile, before her face became plain. “I guess sometimes when we want something that much, we’ll do anything to get it” Lisa trailed off, getting lost in her thoughts for a moment. “Oh well, like I said, I just wanted to say congrats ... Enjoy your party anyway” she perked up. “And, he’s gorgeous by the way. Obviously got his mums looks” she smiled faintly.

“Thanks” blushed a grateful Martha; it meant alot to her that Lisa would even approach her after what had happened.

“I’ll see you Martha”.

“Yeah … see you” her voice drifted away into the atmosphere. She was alone again, never a good sign, and now flooded with even more negative thoughts and regret.

“Am I mistaken, or did I just see Lisa here?” Jack soon appeared behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her inwards.

She smiled as she felt him come up behind her. “No, you weren’t mistaken” she sighed, “she came to congratulate us” she added as she held his arms to her body, stroking his skin.

“You’re kidding me?” he said as he placed his chin onto her shoulder.

“Nope”

“Wow; I’m surprised, I thought she couldn’t stand us” he commented.

“Yeah, well, it was a long time ago … I mean, I’m fairly certain she doesn’t want to be best friends or anything, but … maybe she’s ready to be civil. Not that I could blame her if she still hated me”.

“Hmm, well, I guess we’ll see what happens” he responded, soon changing the subject, sensing she’d only sink into a pit of depression if they kept discussing it. “Anyway, what are you doing out here by yourself” he nudged her closer to him, “Its cold out here, you’ll get a chill. And you’re missing the party” his voice slipped into a moan.

“Yeah I know, but I’m not really in a party mood at the moment, sorry”.

“Anything you want to talk about?”

“Not really” she shrugged.

“Come on Martha; talk to me. You’ve been quiet all evening,” he persisted. It was one of his best qualities after all.

“Its just" she began, taking a deep breath before exhaling, "I feel like, like its all so bitter sweet … like, I’m bitter because I cant help but feel like my freedoms over now … but then I hate myself for thinking it" her teeth ground together as she spoke the word HATE, "because I love him sooo much" she gushed; her mind wandering back to her little boy. "I guess I’m just a little overwhelmed, or… freaked out or scared or something … I don’t know”.

“That’s completely understandable Martha, you can’t hate yourself for wanting your freedom. You’ve gone from being just an everyday 22 year old woman, with no worries in the world. And now you have a son, someone who’s completely dependant on you. Someone that’s going to look up to you and hang on your every word … I’m not surprised you’re freaked out … I am too. I think anyone would be, no matter how old you are … but the most important thing in all of this is, that we support each other, and we communicate. We’re a team in this. And no matter what the future brings, and no matter how hard it might be, we’ll get through it together”.

She was moved by his words of support, as she turned around and faced him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “How do you do that Jack?” she smiled as a tear slid down her cheek.

“What?” he practically whispered back, his heart melting as he looked into her glistening eyes.

“Make me feel suddenly so calm about everything ... like there’s nothing to worry about.”

His grin grew wider, his teeth a flash of white as he replied, “Magic!” his eyebrows rose.

She laughed a breath-filled chuckle, before moving even closer and pressing her lips against his, ever so softly…

……………………………………

(11.30pm)

“Hey there little man” he whispered down to his soundlessly asleep son. “I hope you’re dreaming happy dreams … because I think I’m living mine right now” he smiled in awe of baby Jakes beauty as he gazed down at him, “you will never know how much I love you son”.

Placing a kiss on the tips of his two fingers, he gently touched his sons head. “Nighty night”. Before he silently stepped outside, keeping the door open a jar before heading for the bedroom.

……

There she lay; her arms nestled in by her neck, her eyes closed and her chest rising and falling, ever so slightly. She looked completely at peace.

He smiled, taking a moment to just stare at her. It had been a stressful few weeks; Martha in particular deserved a good nights rest.

“I’m not asleep Jack” her voice appeared almost out of nowhere, “I was waiting for you” she said as her eyes gently flicked open; her mouth now up-turned in a sweet smile.

He returned the smile, holding her eyes as he walked around the bed and slipped inside.

She swiveled on the mattress as he came up beside her; turning to face him.

“Hey” he breathed as he wrapped his arms around her, their heads automatically leaning in to a kiss.

“Mmm” she mumbled against his lips before they pulled away, “Hey”.

His vision ran over her face, studying the roundness of her liquid brown eyes. She seemed somewhat more awake now, he thought briefly to himself.

“Are you not tired?” he questioned her softly, pulling his hand from under the quilt to stroke her smooth forehead.

“Nope” she shook her head from side to side.

His teeth automatically bit the side of his bottom lip. “Good” he smiled; his voice as tender as ever, “because I think I’ve still got a little more energy to spare … What do you say to adding some more magic to this evening?”

Her grin grew wider within that second, her entire face lighting up at the notion. From then on they spoke no words. They didn’t need to; they simply came together as one, skin to skin, and sparked the magic back to life.

Oh wow!

That was not a cruddy chapter, it was beautiful and emotional and I loved it :) This is by far the best Jack and Martha fic I have ever read :P

That was sooo well-written. You described Martha's feelings so well. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL MY SISTER HAS HER BABY!

Loved that whole scene. Classic JnM!

So is this the last chapter, or what?? :(

^ Awww, no of course not!

I've still got a couple more chapters planned :) The next few will continue into the future; a few years from now. Just to show how Jack and Martha's lives have progressed.

Hopefully I'll be able to update sooner than later.

Thanks for commenting. I didnt think anyone would read it after so long lol.
