Perry Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 If ATWT and Luke&Noah can survive in a country like that I think H&A should be fine if they decided to have a gay couple. This protest campaign seems to be a response to the fact that ATWT has started showing Noah and Luke kissing again, something that was brought on and pushed for to happen by thousands and thousands of fans. I sent both Van Hansis (who plays Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) a letter to show how great it is for them to portray two characters that are in love the way they do. I also said that it is a shame AUstralia doesn't show ATWT because there is alot this country can learn from them. They both replied and sent me an autograph photo I was SO HAPPY!

I agree there, Australia could learn a lot from ATWT (it's the most realistic Daytime out there) - although I cannot watch full episodes, I follow Nuke through CBS's YouTube channel, and am also considering writing to them - maybe even get there support for a regular gay character (don't know what they'll say though ) - I don't know how far I can push this topic - so Iwon't test it out, so I've included a link to a pic of their ground-breaking first kiss - just because I haven't got a life and get to involved in these serialised dramas () Nuke/Loah
DinerLandlord Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Sorry in A Gay posting mood Gay kiss in Eastenders! That one guy looks like Charlie Unfortunately this storyline sucks beyond belief, in my opinion. It's definitely a good thing that Eastenders have tried(but failed) to handle a storyline such as Steven coming out, but they have handled it very poorly. It was extremely rushed and seemed to come from nowhere, and worst of all Steven is leaving very soon so they just had him come out and now he's going so we never actually get to see him dealing with his sexuality over a long-term basis. Also the guy he has his first kiss with is practically his uncle(his step-mother's brother), not to mention a complete creep and a totally stereotypical camp gay guy who does nothing but sleep around or talk about having sex with men . I still the think the BEST ever gay character in a soap is John-Paul from Hollyoaks. The storyline of him coming out and falling for Craig was excellent, and it went at a natural pace, and felt really genuine. John-Paul isn't a ridiculous TV stereotype, he's just a normal guy who happens to be gay. Even though his first romance with Craig didn't work out he's got a new lover now(who just happens to be a priest), which keeps the soap element of the storyline going. I like NUKE, but I think John-Paul and Craig is still the original and the best. Emmerdale also had a great grown-up approach to gay characters, there are a few in the show(one of which is played by Richard Grieve, who played Lachie in Home and Away), and they're all different kinds of guys, with different personality traits, not just flaming queens. One of them is married and feels totally comfortable in the closet, which is quite a realistic portayal of a lot of men in real-life.
sunray Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Hey perryadams - I really commend you for kicking this thread off. I feel so passionately about this issue and quite frankly, think Cameron Welsh's response is lame. If H&A producers truly wanted to represent different personalities, they would hire actors who aren't all white, attractive and fit. Much as I absolutely adore the show, I am under no illusions about the target audience it reaches out to - white and middle class. It really struck me last year when I was working in the Northern Territory. I did worked with some Aboriginal kids, one of whom was a cute little seven year with a flair for the dramatics. I used to tease her that she would end up on Home and Away or Neighbours (being Irish, those two will always spring to mind first!). Anyway, this little kid told me that they didn't put kids like her on shows like that - she would have to go to Imparja - the local Aboriginal channel. The worst part was I couldn't tell her she was wrong. It really struck me then, just how unrepresentative those shows are - and I'd include All Saints, McLeods etc in there too. It strikes me as ridiculous in this day and age that representing gay people on the show is even remotely an issue. The show is light years behind some of it's European counterparts with regard to this issue. Sorry - will get off my soapbox now but I am definitely sending them a rainbow - all the way from Ireland!!!

When I posted at HAAC I had people ask why should we have a gay character and not a black one or an asian? It's not an either/or situation. HAA needs to be more diverse!
Luc Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 This goes to prove Australia is changing... 'Husband', 'Wife' Banned From Classrooms in Australian Anti-Homophobia Initiative Teachers are being urged to stop using terms such as husband and wife when addressing students or families under a major anti-homophobia push in Australian schools. The terms boyfriend, girlfriend and spouse are also on the banned list — to be replaced by the generic "partner" — in changes sought in reducing discrimination in classrooms. Schools are coming under pressure to provide lessons for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and stack their libraries with books and videos covering their issues. Among the demands are the outlawing of homophobic comments by teachers or students on the playground and a requirement for teachers to receive "diversity training." Education Director-General Michael Coutts-Trotter emerged as a leader of the school anti-homophobia campaign, opening a Government-backed conference on sexual diversity — That's So Gay. The Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations also weighed into the debate, calling for "appropriate literacy materials promoting diversity in families." The radical shake-up means that families with two mothers or two fathers are set to be accepted as a normal part of school communities. Coutts-Trotter said public schools had a responsibility to include children from same sex couples and allow no discrimination. "Happy families come in all shapes and sizes," he said. "We value diversity and include everyone in the life of the school ... meeting the bare legal requirement is not enough. "Public education has a responsibility to include ... to strive to make all feel welcome." Coutts-Trotter said he was aware some teenagers felt "lonely and abandoned as they come to terms with their sexuality." He said leadership from students in public and independent schools was an important weapon to support those facing discrimination and "combat homophobia." "Our schools should be sanctuaries (for students)." The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the department is already spearheading a major push to win acceptance for gay and lesbian students in public schools. Source
