emmasi Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 This goes to prove Australia is changing... 'Husband', 'Wife' Banned From Classrooms in Australian Anti-Homophobia Initiative .... The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the department is already spearheading a major push to win acceptance for gay and lesbian students in public schools. Source Most of that story was an unsubstantiated beat up by the Telegraph, a paper not even worthy of being used as garbage wrap. A fellow Media Watch fan ? Yeah, that article is not a good thing. It makes out like people who want homosexuality accepted have something against heterosexuality, which would be just as stupid and wrong. It's a thinly-veiled scare tactic to suggest that if you give them an inch (ie, the same rights and opportunity to be understood like everyone else), it'll just be political correctness run riot. There's nothing wrong with saying husband & wife, just as there's nothing wrong with saying husband & husband or wife & wife. I hate the word partner. It always makes me wonder if a couple are fighting crime in their spare time I think the only place it works without sounding pretentious is if you've been with someone long enough and seriously enough that they're not a boyfriend or girlfriend anymore, but you're also not married to them. But that's just my personal opinion of it. No offense intended to those who like it and do have "partners"
Perry Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Sorry in A Gay posting mood Gay kiss in Eastenders! That one guy looks like Charlie Unfortunately this storyline sucks beyond belief, in my opinion. It's definitely a good thing that Eastenders have tried(but failed) to handle a storyline such as Steven coming out, but they have handled it very poorly. It was extremely rushed and seemed to come from nowhere, and worst of all Steven is leaving very soon so they just had him come out and now he's going so we never actually get to see him dealing with his sexuality over a long-term basis. Also the guy he has his first kiss with is practically his uncle(his step-mother's brother), not to mention a complete creep and a totally stereotypical camp gay guy who does nothing but sleep around or talk about having sex with men . I still the think the BEST ever gay character in a soap is John-Paul from Hollyoaks. The storyline of him coming out and falling for Craig was excellent, and it went at a natural pace, and felt really genuine. John-Paul isn't a ridiculous TV stereotype, he's just a normal guy who happens to be gay. Even though his first romance with Craig didn't work out he's got a new lover now(who just happens to be a priest), which keeps the soap element of the storyline going. I like NUKE, but I think John-Paul and Craig is still the original and the best. Emmerdale also had a great grown-up approach to gay characters, there are a few in the show(one of which is played by Richard Grieve, who played Lachie in Home and Away), and they're all different kinds of guys, with different personality traits, not just flaming queens. One of them is married and feels totally comfortable in the closet, which is quite a realistic portayal of a lot of men in real-life. I watched Eastenders tonight and I'm pretty sure it was Christian's first episode, he had a dinner with his sister and her husband (Steven's mum and dad) and his partner who he was quite horrible too. And as Stereotypical and creepy as he is I kind of liked him. It was also funny that in lastnights episode Steven was saying how he "Doesn't want their homosexuality flaunted". I like Steven he's quite cute- It's a shame he's leaving because it looks like I can get into his storyline. I also watched Emmerdale and there was one Gay guy who worked at the bar who was more what I'll call the *stereotypical* gay.
Anaya Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Whilst I too am happy that EE introduced a character that is gay, Christian is very much a stereotype and DinerLandlord's opinion on him is spot on. There are times you will love Christian, he can be very funny and some of his antics are hilarious to watch and his friendship with Roxy is great. A lot of the time he can come across as one dimensional and he always seems to have that grin plastered on his face, whatever the occasion, after a while it gets a little annoying. He certainly isn't as bad as Sean Tully was in Coranation Street. It's a shame you don't get Hollyoaks, as John Paul McQueen is just awesome and his whole coming out storyline and the McDean affair was handled superbly. JP is just another regular male character who happens to be gay and nothing about him is a stereotype. Well done to HO for doing justice there.

He does look like an either love him or hate him type of character. Steven seems likeable though. It is a shame we don't get Holloaks but thank god for Youtube!

It is a shame we don't get Holloaks but thank god for Youtube! You can say that again! I'm sure you caught up with the McDean scenes on there. Steven's another love him or hate him type of character, the writers seem to mess him about at times, and Steven's coming out storyline was just lame. It was over before it started really.

I only just started to tell you the truth... I've been to wrapped up in Nuke to even consider falling in love with another couple on youtube but John Paul is so and Craig is so and the two of them together... I'm sorry Nuke who?
Anaya Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Nuke McDean Gaden If only the writers would stop being blind here!
Perry Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Imagine if HAA could let Gaden have a kiss as beautiful as JP and Craigs.
Anaya Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 I would faint from sheer disbelief! Once over the initial shock, I would certainly applaud the writers for finally having the guts to go there and I would cherish that moment and watch the scene over and over again.

Unfortuanetly we don't get Hollyoaks in Australia That's a real pity, I think you guys would love it, not just the gay storyline, but also as a show overall it's really great. It just won the majority of the awards at the British Soap Awards recently, which proves how popular it is, despite it being under-rated. Look it up on YouTube, you'll be hooked!!!
