#...Closer each day - Home and A-gay#

It is about time we had a gay character in Home and Away. The British soaps are full of them.

In 'Hollyoaks' (airs at 6.30) one of the most popular characters is a gay teenager called John-Paul. He is currently having a fling with a gay priest!!! John Paul is often seen in bed with his lovers.

In 'Coronation Street' (airs at 7.30) we have Sean and Marcus, a gay couple. Sean works in a factory and as a barman. Marcus is a sonographer. A reccurring (previously regular) character is also gay, the son of one of the most popular characters. The actor who plays Sean is very popular and also presents chat-shows etc...

In 'Emmerdale' (airs at 7.00) we have married gays!!! :) Paul and Jonny got married about a month ago. Paul is a barman and Jonny is a farrier. Paul is one of the most popular characters, unfortunately Jonny is leaving soon. Also, there is another gay character, Grayson, but he is currently dating a woman, who is pregnant with his ex-wifes baby.

In 'EastEnders' there is Christian. He is a new and popular character. He is about to make another character, Steven, realise his sexuality. Steven is 17.

In new Aussie BBC soap 'Out of the blue' there is a lesbian couple. This will air on Channel Ten.

Yeah, I think there should be too. It doesn't have to be a gay character, it can be a character whose gay

What I mean is that a person's sexuality doesn't make a person, and this should be the case.

My opinion exactly. If someone asked me to describe Brian Kinney from Queer as Folk, I'm not even sure I'd remember to mention that he's gay, that's not what makes his character.

I'd like to have a gay character in Home and Away - It's something that's missing from the show, I think we'd all like it better if there was a good gay storyline. We know they've already tried it, but that wasn't really a success, and guess why? I think it's because they are too scared to tackle something like that.

I may be shallow but I lost interest in QAF when I found out Kinney as well as a lot of the cast were straight. Normally I wouldn't react like that as I don't care if str8s play gay parts or vice versa. However, QAF was so 'full-on' with its sexual content that the 'straightness' of Kinney especially just spoilt the show for me - I couldn't watch it without thinking that he was just acting (yes, all actors act but their success lies in making you forget they are acting for that short time).

I know what you mean, even if I didn't feel the same way about it. The fact that I knew many of the guys were straight (I didn't have all the details about who was and who wasn't from the beginning) didn't bother me, to me it was more like "Okay, he can't be straight, he gotta be at least bi!" when I saw the straight actors (especially Gale Harold) in some of the scenes. Their good acting just completely overshadowed what I knew about them.

That being said, I don't think I'd always see it that way, but while some people might have a hard time picturing the character when they know the actor is nothing like it, I'm more of a person who finds it almost impossible to see an actor I know from somewhere else play a character that's pretty much the opposite of what I'm used to seeing them as.

I don't think I'd ever be able to see Sean Hayes play some macho action hero and womanizing pig, to me he will always be Jack McFarland. Just like that I don't think Beverly Mitchell would ever be able to convince me as a wild and crazy lesbian who doesn't do relationships; she'll always be Lucy Camden to me.

You've been busy . Well done! Now, if 7 looked at this, I'm pretty sure they'd consider adding a gay couple, and with Out of the Blue, something's telling me that it'll be on at 7pm (after the Big Brother season) and Seven will lose the ratings because Out of the Blue is more realistic.

I may have said this before (along with other posters), but I'd like there to be a character who just happened to be gay, not a character who is given a storyline relating to the fact that s/he is gay.

That was probably an appalling explanation, for which I apologize. :)

The explanation was fine, I got it, and I'm not the smartest of the bunch. :P

I think you underestimate the extent of homophobia in Australia, You have to remember that homosexuality was not decriminalised in Tasmania for example until as recently as 1997!

However, I don't want to see a token gay character just for the sake of there being a gay character. As people none of us are defined solely by our sexuality we are defined by a whole range of factors of which our sexuality is but one. So I would like to see a character who is well rounded, and well developed, and who just happens to be gay, but who is not defined purely in terms of his or her sexuality. Introducing a character purely for shock vlalue and defining him/her in terms of their sexuality is patronising and demeaning.

So if Out of the Blue is on at 7pm, I guess the question is Which soap will you be watching?
