I think some parts of this chapter is the best I've ever written, other parts I hate. I'll leave you to judge :)

Chapter 18

Jack sat on the pier, alone. It was five hours since Sam had been carried off by the police. Five hours that felt like an eternity. An endless eternity. Rory had been told. The poor little kid was devastated. Jack was sure that he wouldn’t be able to take proper care of him in his current state, and he had been hustled off to the city to stay with his aunt. Jack felt bad abandoning him like that but he didn’t need a messed up man taking care of him, his mother was already a murderer and a drug dealer.

He dangled his feet in the water, the cool rush flowing over his bare feet. The pain was growing, gnawing away inside him, making him feel empty and useless. As he looked out at the water he realised that, really, he’d never loved Sam. Sam had been safe, and wonderful, and loving, and she needed him. But he’d never loved her. And now he didn’t even want to think about her, about her criminal life. Into his mind came a vision of her. Long dark hair, blue eyes that shone with vivacity and cheekiness, soft tanned skin and beautiful lips. She was the one that he’d loved. Always loved. How could he have been so blind? All that time he was with Sam, trying to fight his feelings for her, why couldn’t he just have gone back to her?

“Jack?”

It was her. He recognized her voice. Craning his neck around he saw her standing there, squinting against the sun, her loose button-up white shirt fluttering gently in the breeze. “Martha…”

Martha sat down next to him. “How…how are you feeling?”

Jack didn’t look at her. He stared out at the water, listening to the gentle lap of the waves hitting the pier. “Empty.”

“I know that feeling well.” She turned to look at him. “Jack…I’ve got to tell you something, please don’t hate me for it.”

He sat around and faced her. “Yeah?”

“I found that note, when you were out shopping…I was the one who told the police.” Martha looked up at the sky, tears threatening to well up in her eyes, stinging and burning.

He didn’t say anything, so Martha decided to continue.

“Sam…she was a pole dancer as well. I saw her.” The words sounded so blunt, spoken like that.

“A pole dancer?” Jack asked, raising his eyebrows.

“And…and she was having an affair with someone.”

“Who?”

Martha smiled a little. “Do you really want to know?”

Jack smiled back, just a bit. “No, I guess not.”

“But anyway…you believe me, don’t you? When I found out she threatened me.”

“I believe you.” Jack squinted into the sun, feeling the gentle breeze on his neck. “And…I’m glad you told the police. I shouldn’t have married her. I never loved her.”

“You didn’t?”

“No,” Jack shook his head. With a silent movement Martha put her arm around Jack’s shoulder and they sat there, the water fondling their feet.

“She isn’t coming,” Miles said, putting down the phone.

“What?” Belle and Sally said at the same time.

“She…she really wants to come…but she said she couldn’t abandon her foster parents.” Miles went and leaned against the window, the huge wave of disappointment threatening to engulf him.

“Couldn’t she just come for a visit?” Belle asked.

Miles shook his head. “She said that would make her want to stay.”

“It’s not like she’d be abandoning Rachel and Seamus,” Sally cried. “She could spend time with both of us, and Amanda.”

“Just…just leave it, okay!” Miles said forcibly, walking out the door and slamming it.

Belle and Sally stared at each other, shocked.

“Wow,” Belle said. The air was very negative.

Sally sighed. “Just give him some time…he must feel so rejected.”

“I really want her to come,” Belle replied. “You know what? I’m going to talk to her.”

“Belle, I don’t think you – ”

Belle made her way to the phone and dialled the Finnigan’s number.

”Hello, Rachel Finnigan here.”

“Hi, I’m Belle Taylor, Julie-Ann’s half sister.”

”Oh…erm…hi.”

“I was wondering if I could speak to Julie-Ann please?”

”I really don’t think you should, she’s still upset from Miles talking to her…

“Please! I really need to talk to her, please let me.” Belle crossed her fingers and hoped desperately.

”Okay then, I guess so. Here she is.”

Belle waited a few moments then heard a voice on the phone. ”Hello?

“Hey, it’s me. Belle. Your sister.”

H…hi Belle.”

“Julie-Ann, am I right in saying that you didn’t want to come here at all?”

Yeah. I can’t, Belle, I’ve got a home here.”

Belle couldn’t believe the weirdness of it all. Her talking to her long lost sister. But she continued.

“Well, we’re all really devastated that you didn’t want to come and…and…it is totally your choice but Miles has wanted to meet you again for years, you’re his daughter, and even if you just come for a short visit, we want to see you.”

Belle, I don’t want to argue…”

“You’re my sister, I’ve never had a sister, and I really want to meet you, please Julie-Ann, we’re your family.”

I don’t like being bullied into doing things.”

“You’re not! We just really want you, as a sister and a niece and a daughter.”

Fine…fine, I guess so, I’ll come.”

“Really?” Belle brightened.

Yeah…but probably only for a short visit.” There was a laugh. ”I can’t believe I’m doing this, it’s what I’ve dreamed of for so long! But…but what about Mum and Dad?”

“I’ll talk to your Mum and Dad. Thanks so much…sis.”

1 HOUR LATER:

“She’s coming!” Miles yelled, hugging Sally and Belle.

“Only for a short visit,” Belle said, muffled into Miles’s coat.

“Yeah but still…I’M GOING TO MEET MY DAUGHTER!”

Matilda walked along the beach. It was night and a strong wind was blowing. Her pink skirt was fluttering and she was enjoying the solitude. Geoff had been very distant since she had accidentally called him Ric. Not answering calls or replying text messages. So as usual she turned to a walk on the beach to help her relax a little. Her hands were clenched by her sides and she looked out at the seemingly never-ending expanse of grey moonlit sand.

She saw two figures walking towards her. They were in furious argument and as they drew closer she saw that they were Geoff and Ric. Running up to them she felt her heart quicken. Something was obviously going to happen.

“Hey,” she said softly as a greeting, pushing her hair behind her ear. “What’s going on?”

Ric stared at her. “Matilda, we’ve decided that these games can’t go on. We want you to choose either me or Geoff.”

Geoff nodded. Matilda gasped. “This…this is ridiculous…crazy…I…I…” her voice trailed off. “All right then,” she sighed.

She stared at the two teenagers in front of her, and through her mind flashed a montage of the times she had had with both of them. She remembered the first time she and Ric slept together, and they were nearly caught by Sally and Brad. A quiet giggle escaped her lips. She remembered crying in Ric’s arms after Beth had died. She remembered telling him that it was over, after their final. She remembered sitting in the waiting room while Rachel lay in a coma, Geoff’s arms around her. She remembered the way Geoff tilted his head and grinned and blushed when he was embarrassed but pleased She remembered Ric’s eyes when he told her he loved her…

“Ric…” she said, softly. So softly that neither of the boys heard her.

“Sorry?” Geoff asked. His spiky hair stood up straight and his eyes shone blue and clear in the moonlight. She could see the anxiety in both of their faces.

“Geoff,” she said louder. “Geoff, I choose Geoff.”

A smile twisted Geoff’s lips. “Mattie…”

The look in Ric’s eyes was too awful to bear, so she didn’t look at him. She just smiled quaveringly at Geoff, the hot tears pricking the back of her eyes.

Chapter 19: Julie-Ann arrives but her arrival is marked with tragedy as the first death happens.

It will be the worst-timed death ever in Summer Bay. How will the shocked and traumatized residents handle it?

Oh and guys...very important...there might only be one more update, or maybe NONE for a couple of months as I am going travelling and the fic will be on a hiatus. Either way when I leave I will leave a message for you guys. Hope you liked the chapter.
