Chapter Two – Boulder to Birmingham

“So, how was Jake today?” Was the first thing Jake heard as she reached the door of the kitchen, it was her mother’s voice, turning back, Jake rushed up the stairs and pulled her guitar out of her room, covering her bruised face with her blond hair, she walked down the stairs slowly,

“I’m going to go down to the beach, if that’s okay with you,” Jake said without turning to face her mother and step-father,

“Okay, but don’t stay out too long,” Her mother replied, Jake walked to the door and pulled it open, she stood out on the doorstep as she slammed it shut, she placed the guitar around her shoulders. These is what she had done in Tennessee whenever David had hit her, or worse, when he had, well, raped her – she would go out to one of the large fields down by Dollywood and just sing her heart out, sing until she could sing no more. She had once met her idol doing that, Dolly Parton had heard her singing and come to meet her. That had been the highlight of her life; it, for once, took her away from her terrible home life. Jake looked up from the ground and saw she had come to the beach, it was marvellous – clear blue ocean, deep yellow sand – everything she though a beach should be. She sat down and started strumming her guitar, and began to sing, her strong voice flowing out again,

I don't want to hear a love song, I got on this airplane just to fly and I know there's life below me. But all that you can show me is the prairie and the sky. And I don't want to hear a sad story, full of heartbreak and desire,” Tears began forming in her eyes as memories began flashing back to her of the hours before, as David had clenched his fist, firing off profanities and insults at her, “The last time I felt like this I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire and I stood on the mountain. In the night and I watched it burn, I watched it burn, I watched it burn. I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham; I would hold my life in his saving grace. I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham, if I thought I could see, I could see your face,” David turned away from her, she released her breath, he turned back around and raised his hand, “Well you really got me this time, and the hardest part is knowing I'll survive. I have come to listen for the sound of the trucks as they move down out on ninety five, and pretend that it's the ocean coming down to wash me clean; to wash me clean. Baby, do you know what I mean? She flinched as his palm connected with the side of her pale face, and again, and again, ”I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham; I would hold my life in his saving grace. I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham, if I thought I could see I could see your face. If I thought I could see I could see your face...She fell to the ground, her hand clasped around the side of her face, tears falling down her face, she let her hand fall limp as tears overcame her. She heard the sound of sand crunching behind her,

“That was beautiful,” A female voice said from behind her, Jake turned and faced her, she was a young girl, possibly 16-20, she had blue eyes and long brown hair,

“Thankyou,” Jake said, the girl sat down next to her and looked at her face,

“What happened,” The stranger asked, seeing the deep purple bruise that covered the left side of her face, Jake, as an instant response, pulled a lock of her over the side of her face,

“Walked into a wall,” She said to the girl, “Hi, I’m Jake,” She said, offering her hand, the other girl grasped it,

“Hi Jake, I’m Matilda,” the girl said, before turning away, “Are you new around here?” Matilda knew the answer, but was kindly making conversation,

“Yeah, I just moved here, from Pigeon Forge in America,” She said, Matilda nodded; her mobile began to beep,

“I’ll be seeing you around,” Matilda said, waving, Jake nodded, before turning her attention to the beach; she began strumming at her guitar again.

Matilda walked away and opened the text message she had just received.

Matilda smiled as she climbed into her car; she shoved the key into the ignition and turned, she glanced one final time at Jake before putting the car into drive and hit the accelerator.

Matilda pulled up outside the front of the Campbell house and saw George over by the garage, the hood of his car up,

“How’s it going, Mr. Campbell!” Matilda called out as she walked up towards the house,

“Hi Matilda,” He said without looking up from the engine, “And how many times have I told you? Call me George,” He finished, searching along the side of the car for a tool, she walked up to the door and knocked, and after a few moments Miranda Campbell came to the door,

“Matilda! Hi!” She said, moving out of the doorframe to allow Matilda in, she walked into the small and cosy hallway, “Geoff’s upstairs in his room, if you want to go up,”

“Thanks Mrs. Campbell,” Matilda said before ascending the stairs, she got to Geoff’s bedroom door and knocked,

“Come in,” Geoff said faintly, Matilda opened the door and found Geoff standing between two bars, his feet moving slowly across the floor. He looked up and saw Matilda, “Hi,” he said, Matilda walked over to him and kissed him passionately, Geoff kissed back,

“I didn’t know you still needed this,” Matilda said, sounding both confused and compassionate, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I’m independent Matilda, I don’t need to tell you everything,” He snapped, his face fell, “I’m sorry Matilda,” He said, getting to the end of the bars, he got out from between them and walked slowly over to his bed, and flinched as he sat down,

“You’ve gotten worse haven’t you? The doctor warned you this could happen if you overworked yourself,” Matilda reminded her boyfriend as she sat down next to him and placed her arm around his shoulders, Geoff faced her,

“I know, I know, but I just want to be able to walk properly,” Geoff told her, “I just want to be able to walk, and to run, and to play football again, I want to...” Matilda interrupted him, placing her lips over his, she kissed him, and he kissed her back.
