----------------------------------

Belle gaped at Justin. If he had asked her if she loved Aden she knew her answer would’ve been a resounding YES…but he hadn’t. Instead he had asked her how much and this threw her into a state of uncertainty. How could she calculate the amount she loved that boy? Her boy? She had never thought about it in that way before.

‘I love him…’ she started slowly, trying to find the words to express how she felt. ‘I love him so much…I, I love him so much it hurts sometimes.’ She looked up at him. ‘He’s everything to me.’

Justin nodded, ‘Good. I just need to know that you’re not going to hurt him.’ His face softened into a smile. ‘He love s you, you know.’

‘I know.’ Belle whispered, with a small smile. ‘I would never, ever hut him.’ She added slightly more fiercely than she had intended.

Justin nodded again, ‘I don’t know how much Aden’s told you, but he’s been through a lot and I hope you didn’t mind the questions but…I just needed reassurance, y’know?’

‘He hasn’t told me a lot…only really about the, umm, suicide attempt, but…’ she shrugged.

‘WHAT?!’ Justin jumped to his feet. ‘THE WHAT?!!!’

Oh ****, Belle thought to herself. ‘Uhh…You didn’t know?’ she asked meekly, while mentally kicking herself.

For a moment Justin, in all his anger and shock, looked huge and menacing. But then he sank back into the couch with a sigh, covering his face with his hands. ‘No. No, he did not tell me that. Oh god, I should never have left him….I should’ve stayed…’

‘When did you leave?’ Belle asked softly.

‘Aden was 10, I was 17. I was his older brother! I should’ve looked after him, I should’ve known better!!’

‘That’s when he said he did it.’ Belle said in a hushed voice.

‘Did he say anything else?’ Justin looked at her, his eyes drawn and tired.

She shook her head and once again felt her heart near breaking point for her boy. What horrors must be in his past?

‘I’m really sorry Justin,’ she excused herself. ‘But I’ve got to get to work.’

‘Of course, of course.’ He showed her to the door.

She went to leave but stopped just before she left and turned, ‘This is really something you should talk to him about….I mean, if you’re the only one who understands….why.’

Justin nodded and she left.’

--

Justin sat watching his brother sleep, waiting for him to wake up. He could wait as long as it took, this was something he couldn’t, he just couldn’t let go. He watched Aden carefully, lovingly, like the protective older brother he always should’ve been. Even in sleep Aden wasn’t at peace, a frown was etched across his face; his hands screwed into tight fists and brought up defensively over his chest. Justin leant forward slightly as Aden’s breathing began to quicken and the frown set even deeper. He got out of his chair and hurried to Aden’s side as his breathing quickened more and more until he was almost gasping for breath.

‘Aden! Fuss! Fuss, can you hear me? C’mon kid wake up!’ Justin tried frantically to wake Aden from whatever nightmare that possessed him. But nothing was waking him up and his face took on a slightly bluish tinge due to lack of oxygen. Fear crept over Justin…what if he didn’t wake up? But then suddenly Aden shot up and Justin caught him. A thin film of cold sweat coated his forehead, which he leant gratefully on Justin’s shoulder as he struggled to steady his breath.

‘Easy, easy.’ Justin murmured, rubbing circles soothingly on Aden’s back like their mother did when they were children. ‘You’re safe, kid, you’re safe.’

Aden pulled away, from both Justin and the memory of their mother it conjured up. Shakily he walked to the kitchen and got a glass of water. Justin followed him there, his face full of concern.

‘What’re you doing here?’ growled Aden, a combination of the letter and sleep deprivation taking their toll on his temper.

Justin shrugged nonchalantly, ‘Just came to see how you were doing.’

‘Thanks, but I don’t need a babysitter.’ He scowled at Justin.

‘I’m not your babysitter, Fuss, just your concerned brother.’

‘Well, I don’t need one of them either.’ Aden said bitterly. ‘I’ve managed quite well without one.’

Justin grimaced and looked at his hands, ‘Apparently not.’ He remarked.

Aden eyed him suspiciously, ‘What’s that supposed to mean?’

Justin shrugged, ‘I was talking to Belle earlier and she happened to mention something to me that you didn’t…’

‘Belle doesn’t know – oh.’ Comprehension passed over his fatigued face. ‘OH.’

‘Why didn’t you tell me?’

Aden let out a short, mocking laugh, ‘Why would I? it’s not exactly something I’m proud of.’ He snapped.

‘Why did you do it?’

‘I’ll give you 3 guesses Justin, I’m sure even you could work it out.’ Aden said sourly and slammed his glass on the counter top. He stalked back to the living room where he turned on the tv, putting the volume up as high as it would go till the sounds of some inane soap filled the whole house. Justin felt his anger rising and he came in after Aden and switched the tv off again.

‘Hey!’ Aden protested. ‘You can’t do that!’

‘Yes I can, and I’ll tell you this, Aden. We are going to talk about this and we’re going to talk about it now.’ Justin raised his voice and Aden didn’t like it one bit.

‘No, we’re not!’’ he yelled at Justin, jumping off the couch. He started to stomp out of the house but Justin stopped him.

‘Get back here Aden!’

Aden stopped just as he was about to open the door. His hand rested on the handle and his shoulders visibly sagged. When he turned his head to look at Justin the anger had been pushed to the background and hurt had taken its place.

‘Why?’ he asked, his voice barely a hoarse whisper. ‘Why are you making it sound like I’m the one who committed a crime?’

And with that he left, leaving Justin standing shocked and alone in Roman’s house.

--

Aden went walking along the beach which was deserted due to the dark clouds which were unfurling over his head. They were inky, dense clouds which blotted out the sun and cast a shadow over the whole bay. It was, as Aden ruefully reflected, a bit like the way his life had turned out. But his clouds just seemed to be getting thicker and thicker. He kept walking, further and further away from his brother and his questions. As rain started to tickle down from the sky Aden kept going. As the drizzle turned into torrents of rain Aden barely noticed, though he wore only a t shirt and jeans, which stuck to him heavily as they were soaked. Aden stumbled on, not knowing where he was or where he was going. His eyes began to glaze over as thoughts, feelings and emotions flew around inside his head. He couldn’t fix on one and they were frying his brain, all clamouring for attention and focus.

Pain shot like a lightning bolt through his head and was instantly matched by a real one further out at sea. Aden looked up and knew he should get off the beach and try and find his way home. He suddenly noticed how cold and wet he was. Shivering, he began to stumble his way off the beach. He never made it. As pain shot through his head over and over again his eyesight went fuzzy. The whole world tilted and Aden collapsed on the ground.

--

‘…And we are now issuing a severe flood warning across the whole Yabbie Creek and Summer Bay area, folks, so be prepared for a worse case scenario….’ Crackled the voice from the radio playing in the Diner’s kitchen. Roman, Belled and Irene all exchanged worried glances, oblivious to the fact that Aden was lying unconscious somewhere along the beach. Little did they know, in a few short hours they would be wishing for worse case scenario and not the reality they would, in fact, be faced with.
