Fantastic chapter!!!

I like this Violet character and i love how you got her to tell her story in that way and the emotions she felt were so in tune with what Aden would be feeling. It was the perfect reaction from him!

Please update soon!!! I want more!!!! :D

Here, have another update before I go out for the weekend! Same old warnings as before: depression/suicidal themes!

PS: Sorry that this had turned into less of an 'Adelle' fic and more of an 'Aden and Belle' fic, if you get what I mean...the fic just took this direction without me meaning it to!

Chapter Fourteen:

“I heard about your outburst Aden.”

Aden was back in Dr Kempton’s office. “So? I don’t like group therapy. What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing, but it’s just another means to help you.”

“Yeah, I get that, but it’s pretty hard when they’re people like Violet around.” He muttered.

“Ah.” Dr Kempton said knowingly. “So you’ve had a run in with Violet McMillan?”

“I dunno...is that her last name? If she’s the completely insane one, then yes. More than a few.” He said meanly.

“Aden, you shouldn’t talk about other patients like that. Violet has had a lot of problems, just like you. How would you like it if someone went around saying things like that about you?”

“I’d probably want to punch them in the face.” He admitted.

Dr Kempton raised his eyebrows. “Obviously then, you wouldn’t like it, so please try and be nice to other people.”

“But Violet! She’s just so...” Aden stopped, searching for the right word.

“Forward?”

“Yeah!”

Dr Kempton chuckled inwardly. “It’s how she copes. But enough talk about her. I want to talk about you.”

“I don’t. Did she really see her dad stab her mum?” Aden asked, slightly too eagerly.

“Aden.” Dr Kempton warned. “You know I can’t discuss another patient’s history. It’s time to focus on you now.”

“Okay, okay.” Aden sighed in defeat. “What’s today’s subject, doc?”

“I want to talk about Belle.”

“Belle?” Aden groaned. “Oh, why her? What about my dad or something? Not Belle!”

“That’s why Belle. You don’t want to talk about her. I want you to.”

“Belle’s gone from my life for good. She’s in the past.” Aden announced.

“I want to know about the past, then.” Dr Kempton would not let up on the boy’s insistence to avoid questions. “Where did you meet?”

“Fine.” He sighed. “We started working together. She was in my grade at school, but she never talked to me until we actually had to co-operate together.”

“Did you like working with her?”

“Yeah, it was pretty fun. We teased each other heaps, actually. Once I got to know her, I really liked her sense of humour, and how she could give as good as she could take. When my dad was hurt at work and I found out he had been drinking again, she was there to support me. That’s when I knew that maybe we could have something more than a friendship.”

“What happened when you started having a relationship?”

“I grew closer to her, and she wanted to be with me...in that way...but I couldn’t do it. After everything that had happened with my grandad, I couldn’t get past those feelings...so I kept pushing her away. I felt I couldn’t admit something like that to her ever, and I almost lost her.”

“Almost?”

“Yeah. I eventually told her...and she was so understanding and supportive! I thought we were stronger than ever! I even got therapy so I could be with her, and I thought we were going great, and then...she broke up with me.” Aden finished sadly.

“How did you feel after that happened?”

“I felt so angry! I had done so much for her, but then she just dumped me for that stupid loser cop! She even got a new job so we wouldn’t have to work together- how’s that for trying to avoid someone? I was falling in love with her, and then she just hurt and rejected me, like everyone else did.”

“By everyone else, do you mean your family?”

“Yeah. Everyone that I cared about always let me down! Always!” Aden was getting himself worked up.

“So what did you do to cope?” Dr Kempton tried push him on.

“I invited my brother around! And do you know what he did? He tried to kill her because she knew my secret!” Aden let out a frustrated scream. “Why does this keep happening to me? Why do the people I try to trust always let me down?”

“Aden, your brothers- they were abused by your grandfather as well, weren’t they?”

“Yeah, so?”

“So, they are probably as disturbed as you are by what happened, and your brother was not in the right mental state when he did that. I’m not condoning what he did, but if we make allowances for the people you’ve hurt over time, then surely we can make a few allowances for him?”

Aden calmed. He had never thought that Justin would be having just as tough time dealing with what happened as he did. He had never really thought about his brother’s mental states. They had always seemed stronger than him- tougher, angrier. His brother’s were probably breaking inside, just as much as he was. “I never thought of it that way.” He said out loud.

“That’s what I’m here for- to open your mind to new ideas. Let me give you this- if a man can’t swim to save himself, how is he expected to save anybody else?”

“Well, he can’t...” As he saw the look on Dr Kempton’s face, he understood what he was talking about. He hung his head in shame. “Oh, god! Now I feel guilty for hating them both so much, because they didn’t protect me!”

“Don’t feel guilty- you didn’t understand what was going on at the time. There’s no need to blame yourself in all of this.”

“Still...I can’t help it.”

“I want you to think about your brothers after this session, and we will develop it further next session. But I really would like to get back to Belle, if you don’t mind.”

“Okay.”

“You felt angry when you found out she was in hospital, yes?”

“Yeah, I did. Plus I was worried about her, so I went to see her.”

“What happened there?”

“Well, I got all worked up and stuff, and then she blurted out the real reason why she couldn’t be with me.”

“Which was?”

“She was scared of me! She was always frightened when she was with me- she couldn’t feel safe! What sort of person does that make me, then, if my own girlfriend doesn’t trust me?” He whimpered, holding tears back.

“Aden, Belle knew about your past. But she probably had trouble dealing with it, and with your consequential actions. She didn’t know how to cope, and I bet there’s another reason why she broke it off with you- she didn’t want to let you down!”

“But she did let me down!”

“No, you don’t understand. She probably felt that she would just make it all worse, that you needed better help than what she could give to you. Belle is not a trained professional, and she probably thought that she should get out before she made you worse.”

“But she was the best thing that ever happened to me!”

“I believe that Belle loved you very much, Aden. She helped you face up to your past- she helped you through that first step! But I think she had done all she could. It was up to you to now take the next steps without her. You say you only slept with her because you wanted to show her how much you loved her?”

“I wanted to be close with her, is there something wrong with that?”

“Did you do it for her, Aden- or for yourself?”

Aden fell into silence, as a memory floated into his head. It was of seeing his dad at the hospital. His dad told him he had stopped drinking, and asked him to come home. Aden had told him that he couldn’t, that his dad had to get better for himself, not for him. “I am such a hypocrite.” He whispered.

“I’m sorry, I don’t follow.”

“I told my dad that he had to get better for himself, rather than for me, and then I go sleep with Belle for her! I didn’t do it for me! I did it to make her happy!”

“Maybe Belle realised that it was time that each of you needed to start focusing on yourselves, rather than the other person. Do you think that’s why she broke up with you?”

Aden stared at him, eyes wide. “I don’t know. But it sure makes a lot of sense.”

“You’re not to blame here, Aden, and neither is she. People usually make the best judgement call for themselves in the end. Call it selfish if you will, but it’s the way we cope. Just like you trying to commit suicide- you thought it was the best thing for you at the time, am I right?”

Aden nodded. He suddenly thought back to Violet- her upfront nature, how she had stared at him, the brutal honesty of her life story- was that her way of coping? And if it was, when Aden had snapped at her- had that made things worse?

----

“Belle- what’s wrong?”

Belle, who had been staring down at her drink, stirring it moodily with the straw, pulled her head up to look at Angelo. They had gone out to the Surf Club for some quiet drinks, but Belle had been distracted all night. “Nothing’s wrong!”

“Belle, don’t lie to me. What’s going on?” He asked, concern spread across his face.

Belle sighed, and grabbed his hand. “I suppose I should tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“I’ve been offered a photography cadetship.”

“Belle- that’s fantastic!” Angelo quickly got up from his seat and gave her a hug. “Congratulations!”

“Thanks.”

Angelo sat back down, grinning like an idiot. “So who is it with?”

“The City Review.”

Angelo’s face fell. “But...that’s a city paper.”

“Yeah.” She nodded sadly, before rushing into an explanation. “They sent me a letter a few days ago saying that the person who had the cadetship had to leave and they wanted me to take the position seeing I was the next best candidate and I really want to take the position seeing this is something I’ve always wanted to do and it’s such a great opportunity to get some real credit to your name with such a fantastic and well respected paper and...”

“Belle, calm down!” Angelo smiled, cutting the worked up girl off. “I understand!”

“You do?” She questioned.

“This is your dream! And as much as I hate for you to leave, I can’t stand in the way of something that will make you so happy.”

“Seriously?”

“What do you expect me to say- no, don’t go; I want you all to myself? I’m not that selfish!”

“But you do realise that if I go, our relationship will have to end.” Belle said seriously.

“I understand that. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for something that you love more.”

Belle was slightly stunned. “But I...I...I...”

Angelo smiled wistfully. “See? You can’t even say that you love me. How can I ask you to stay when I know your heart’s not in it?”

“Angelo, don’t say that!”

Angelo sighed. “Belle, lately I’ve been thinking seriously about us, and I’ve come to realise that I don’t think your heart was ever completely committed to this relationship.”

“But I really do care for you!”

“I know that, and I’m really thankful for all the good times we’ve had together. But I think this has been a long time coming.”

“This...this isn’t about Aden, is it?” Belle asked awkwardly.

“See Belle? I didn’t bring him up just then, you did. I always knew that you still had feelings for him, but I thought that might change. But I guess I’ll always just be the rebound guy.”

“Angelo!” Tears started dripping down Belle’s cheeks. Everything he was saying was right, and it made her feel horrible.

“Belle, its okay- I’m not mad at you.” Angelo said kindly, leaning across the table to wipe away her tears. “I know you did feel something for me, but I don’t think it would have been strong enough to keep us going, even if you didn’t decide to leave.”

“I’m so sorry, Angelo.” She whispered, closing her eyes.

“I think going to the city is exactly what you need- a fresh start.”

“You sound like Irene.”

“I will miss you.”

They clasped hands, Belle smiling through her tears. “I will miss you, too.”

After a few moments, Angelo stood up. “I should get going.” He leant down, and kissed Belle on the top of her head. “I hope you find someone that makes you truly happy, Belle. You deserve it.” He whispered, before turning and heading out the door.

Belle stared after him. She could dwell on what had happened, but what was the point? What’s done was done, and although she felt guilty for treating Angelo like that, she decided that she’d be far better off focusing on the journey ahead.

Through her tears, she smiled. She finally knew where her life was heading, and that made her happy.

Wow... that htherapy session was certainly intense. Loved it all though.

Glad that your Angelo isn't a dimwit like the original one.

Cannot wait to see where this is heading.

I have been catching up with the last few chapters and it is so good.

I love Aden in this fic. He is so heartbreaking to read. You are truly an expert on angsty fics. I should not be enjoying my favourite character becoming suicidal as much as I am. The therapy scenes are great. Hope we get more of that. For some reason I loved that he was even willing to talk about his father instead of Belle. Really shows how painful not being with her is to him. Violet is really interesting. I can't wait for Aden to go back home and deal with everyone.

The Angelo in this fic is the one I would have liked to have seen on the show.

I'm loving the direction you are taking with this fic. I don't mind that there isn't much Adelle ( not to say that I don't want any) but there are enough Adelle fics around so I kinda like seeing something that focuses on each of them indiviually. I hope they do find their way back to each other eventually though.

Quick question. Since you're going in a new direction does that mean that we won't hear anything more about Justin or is there a chance he might come back. It would be nice to see Aden confront Justin once gets his anger issues under control.

I'm going to risk being stoned and say that Aden is a lot better in this fic than in the show.He seems much more self-aware and to be actually dealing with his problems, which is good.

Thankyou everybody! In H&A, it annoyed me how little they showed of his therapy sessions, as well as how they wrote Angelo, so this fic is me [sort of] rewriting the show so I can have peace in my mind of how things should have gone. :P And I'm glad people like the intensity of the therapy sessions- I know from personal experience they can be pretty intense!

enjoy the ride, on the Justin thing...let's just say that there will eventually be a 'family reunion' of sorts... *mysterious smile*
