solaris Posted September 5, 2008 Report Posted September 5, 2008 Warning - Mild language Chapter 18 When Roman and Nicole got home from the diner they found Aden and Belle; the stress of the morning had combined with the emotion of the evening and caught up with them, they were fast asleep in each others arms. A lump formed in Nicole's throat, they looked so right together. Would she ever mean so much to anyone? In her heart she didn't think so, there was no way anyone could ever feel so much for her. “Should we wake them?” “As much as I don't want to I think we have to, if we don't they will be a mess in the morning.” Nicole nodded, agreeing with her dad. “I'll wake them,” Roman looked at his daughter, his surprise evident that she would volunteer. “I'm a girl, it's less threatening to woken by a girl. If you wake Belle she won't see 'Roman' at first, she'll see 'big strong guy' and that's threatening! She already has a random guy making threats, lets not make it any worse” “Okay” Roman wandered into the kitchen, while he was pleased that Nicole would care about not scaring anyone her comments troubled him. Where had his teenaged daughter acquired such a degree of incite? An understanding of things like that was not something he would have expected, how much didn't he know about his little girl? Nicole walked over to the couch, aware that she had probably given her father information she didn't really want him to have. Her dad was smart, he put data together too quickly for her liking. She squatted down by the sleeping duo, taking care to stay far enough away to avoid any instinctive reactions. She put her hand on Belle's arm, calling her name as she did. Belle came awake with a start. “It's ok Belle, it's just Nic!” “Uh, oh! Thank God, I thought it was...” She didn't finish the sentence, didn't need to – Nic's face said she already knew. Instead, she nudged the guy wrapped around her. “Wakey wakey Aden, it appears we fell asleep.” Aden woke up slowly, he was disorientated and it took him a few moments to remember where he was. Sitting up with care he murmured a soft groan, every muscle in his back and neck protesting the movement. Looking at his watch, he knew they couldn't have been asleep too long. He wouldn't have wanted to try and move after whole night in that position! He looked at Nicole, who was crouched on the floor. It wasn't like her to be this nice, what was she up to? “Thanks for waking us.” Nicole gave a half smile and stood up, she'd made the right decision and it felt good. “I should go home.” A jolt of fear ran through Aden, there was no way he wanted Belle to go home on her own in the dark. Roman had walked in just as Belle made the statement, he shared Aden's sentiments. “I'll see you home if you like?” He stopped short of making it a statement of fact, his protective instincts were screaming but Belle was an adult and had to make her own decisions. “Thanks Roman, I'd really appreciate that.” “I'm going to bed, night dad.” “Night Nic,” Nicole winced inwardly at the sound of unresolved questions in her father's voice, there was no doubt that she had revealed far too much. She also knew that there would be questions coming her way, probably sooner rather than later. “Why did you do that Nicole?” She looked at Aden, he query clear. “You woke us, but you did it nicely. I wouldn't have expected it, what gives?” The wince was visible this time, Aden also saw a lot more than she was comfortable with! “I didn't think that Belle needed a guy waking her, she's stressed enough.” That set Aden back, what would Nicole know about **** like that? He'd have never put sensitivity on a list of her traits, something wasn't right here. “There more to you than the snotty princess mentality isn't there? Your reaction this week to a kiss – or more accurately, your reaction to Geoff's lack of reaction – should have clued me in! What happened Nicole?” Her eyes clouded, how had he known? It would be a cold day in hell before she told him anything, he'd just rag on her. “Night handsome!” The phrase might have been the one she used to bug him, but the tone missed by a mile! The statement sounded flat, as if she didn't really mean it. Summer Bay's resident socialite was hiding from something behind a princess attitude, Aden was too familiar with the symptoms to miss them. Either way, he wasn't going to have the chance to pursue it tonight. He watched as she ran upstairs...there was definitely something going on there! The next morning, Aden was downstairs early. He'd already been for a run and had a shower, now he was having breakfast and thinking about Nicole's behaviour the previous night. “Morning.” Aden looked up as Roman walked into the kitchen. “You look very serious, anything I should know?” He was torn, should he tell Roman what he suspected or leave it to Nicole? What if...no, Roman wasn't like his dad! There wasn't a chance that he'd have sat back while Nicole was in trouble, not if he's known about it. His decision made, he followed up with it before he changed his mind. “I'm fine, actually I'm better than fine – I'm great. Me and Belle are giving our relationship another go, I wasn't sure we'd ever get back to that point so I'm...well...I'm good.” “I can hear a but in that, want to tell me about it?” Aden mouth moved into a rueful expression. “I don't particularly want to and I'm even less sure that I ought to, however I'm gonna tell you anyway. I'm worried about Nicole, she's covering something – something painful. I recognise the signs, I used the same methods for a decade - over confidence, attention seeking while pushing people away and random beligerance. Occasionally you give yourself away, if people can read the signs and I can. As to what it is she's hiding, I don't know.” Roman gave him the respect of silence, listening carefully to what he said. He was a bit surprised that the younger man had told him anything, curiosity got the better of him. “Thanks for telling me, I suspected something was up last night. Why did you tell me?” Aden laughed softly, Roman sure had a handle on his personality – trust not being his strong point! “My dad was weak, he couldn't look out for himself let alone his sons. You're not like that, you love your daughter and you'd got hell and back to defend or protect her.” Roman sat back nonplussed, he hadn't been expecting that. “Your dad, to put it bluntly, did not deserve a son like you.” Roman stood up, he needed to talk to Nicole before she left for school. He turned at teh door. “Thanks for trusting me mate, from you it means a lot.” Aden just shrugged in response. “And Aden...” Roman waited until Aden looked at him. “I couldn't be more proud of you if you were my own son.” With that little bombshell Roman walked away, leaving Aden staring after him in shock. Upstairs, Nicole was hurrying to get ready for school. She desperately wanted to be out of the house before her dad got up, a wish that was thwarted by a sharp knock on the door. “Can I come in please Nic?” Nicole crossed the room and opened the door, standing back to allow her dad to enter. Roman perched himself on the end of the bed and gestured for her to follow suit, reluctantly she did. “Something's going on Nic and you're going to tell me what it is!” Nicole didn't respond immediately, trying to find a way to squirm out of this discussion. “I know something happened, don't even think of evading.” Nic gave in, resigned to having to tell the truth. No doubt when she told him, he wouldn't want to know her! “It was back in the city.”

You have to update immediately and i mean that otherwise there will be trouble! Trouble as in bugging reviews for an update if you do not respond!!! (I'm only joking, that was an awesome chapter, i loved the way you played in Nicole's character to Aden and Belle and Roman's comment to Aden about being proud was just 'aw' again (you're really good at those) anyway i loved it, but seriously please update soon!)
