solaris Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 Ok, thanks again for all the comments. I'm glad that people are still enjoying it. This chapter was a bit of a pain to write, it just didn't want ot flow and I'm still not entirely happy with it but here you go. Chapter 24 “Hey Irene.” Belle had barely finished the greeting before she was smothered in a hug. “What am I going to do with you eh girly? It scared 10 years off of me when I got that call, cut brake lines...he was seriously trying to kill you!” Irene looked up at Aden, who was stood behind Belle. He was still looking a little the worse for wear, in spite of the fact that he's obviously changed his clothes. “Are you ok? Have you been checked out by a doctor? You know where the bathroom is if you want to get a shower.” Aden couldn't help it, he started to laugh. “Yes, I'm fine. Roman took me to the hospital...hence we're so late back. This is crazy! I spend years with no-one giving a toss, now I'm surrounded by people checking on me left right and centre.” “Well get used to it, people obviously care about you.” Aden turned towards the stairs where Nicole had just appeared, she came the rest of way down and walked over to him leaving Geoff on the stairs. “Are you really okay?” She put her hand on his face, forcing him to look at her. It made him realise how delicate she was compared to him. Acting on impulse, he pulled her into a hug. Having people care about you was good. “I've got a bump on my head, no house keys and I need to put my statement on dictaphone 'cause I'm repeating it so often. Other than a lack of patience, I'm fine.” Nodding at last she turned to Belle. “Same question?” “No car, no patience and too long with a smarmy cop...I need sleep!” Belle's comments broke the tension and everyone started laughing. “C'mon Nic, I'll drive you home.” She agreed and excused herself to collect her bag from upstairs. Geoff, who'd waited on the stairs, moved out of her way as she hurried past him. “I'm glad you're both okay.” Typical Geoff, quiet and understated. He still wasn't great at showing his feelings, but he was better than he had been. Nicole ran back down the stairs and slipped her shoes on. “See you tomorrow? We still need to finish that assignment.” Geoff grinned at that thought, he couldn't resist the urge to tease her...just a bit. “I'll bring my gloves for round two.” The expression of shocked indignation on her face had everyone laughing again. “You can come round any time tomorrow Geoff, Nic...let's go.” “Sure dad.” “Thanks Roman.” She surprised everyone by brushing a kiss over Geoff's lips before following her dad, Geoff just stood there and watched her leave. She'd just kissed him in front over everyone, what was he meant to do now? A hand landing on his shoulder shocked him back to the present. “Relax mate, it was a kiss...usually it means a girl likes you!” The trademark 'Aden grin' was back, whether he was being supportive or ragging on him was unclear. Irene had vanished, she was very good at making herself scarce when necessary. “Seriously, chill out dude.” He left it there and followed Belle into her room, he locked the door and tugged her into a tight hug. “You were really nice to Geoff.” Belle turned in Aden's arms and returned his hug, resting her head against his chest. Everything always felt so much better when he was with her. “Well, girls can be confusing at the best of times...the poor guy's just not equipped to cope without...OUCH!” Aden released her as she hit his arm, stepping back he rubbed the afflicted area. “That was mean, I'm hurt remember? I have a bump on my head.” Belle rolled her eyes and sat down on the bed. “Aww, poor baby! You told me at the station you were fine...didn't need to get checked out...nothing wrong with you. Don't try and pull the injury card on me now!” He sat down next to her and dropped a kiss on her neck. “I had to try didn't I?” “You usually do. Do you want to stay tonight?” Aden's grin softened into a gentle smile, the smile that was only ever for Belle. “You couldn't get rid of me if you tried.” “I didn't want to be on my own tonight” Belle tilted her head to look at the man in her bed, they'd gone to bed a while ago but neither had been able to get to sleep. “I know what you mean, it sounds crazy but I don't want you out of my sight. Just the thought of what could have happened...booby trapping your locker...” She closed her eyes and rested her head back against his shoulder, his arm was wrapped around her waist as hers was around his. They talked for hours, remembering the good times they'd had together. Playing in the surf like kids, mucking round with Belle's camera even Aden's over the top flirting when he first started at the diner. Eventually they both drifted off to sleep, each comforted by the presence of the other. At Roman's house, Nicole wasn't so fortunate. She lay in bed, fingers linked behind her head and sleep a million miles away. Her mind just wouldn't slow down, question after question flying through it...with very few answers. The worst one was what if her mother decided she wanted her back? Could she do that? Could she force her to go back to the city? It was the last thing she wanted, she'd started to build a life for herself here. Her dad was awesome...most of the time at least...and there was Geoff. Geoff, what would he say about her very public kiss? He'd kissed her once, after the last time they'd worked on their assignment but not since. He'd been her rock when she'd completely lost it, held her when she was crying and spent most of the weekend with her...but he hadn't kissed her! Nicole rolled onto her side and punched her pillow, she might not have school tomorrow but she was going to be a wreck if she didn't get to sleep. Her phone vibrated on the night stand, she always put it on vibrate so it wouldn't wake her. It was text message arriving, 'can't sleep, glad Aden and Belle r ok. R u ok?' Nicole chuckled, Geoff's composure had been shaken as well. For some bazaar reason that made her feel better. She sent him a reply, 'I'm ok, glad they're both ok as well.' Setting the phone back on the night stand she settled back into her pillows, she had to believe that everything would work out. Slowing drifting off the sleep, she tried to imagine her and Geoff together. Could they really work together? Aden and Belle, Nic and Geoff. Now that would be two pairing the bay wouldn't have predicted. Sleep finally claimed her, she succumbed with a smile.
